Psychologists who wish to have one of their book reviews nominated for the prestigious Boatwright Psychology Review award should not submit book review articles that review more than three books at a time. This is because editors for the Boatwright Psychology Review will not publish a book review article if it is too lengthy and cumbersome to read. In their submission guidelines, the editors explicitly state that review articles that cover more than three books at a time are considered too lengthy and cumbersome to read.
Which of the following statements represents an assumption upon which the argument above depends?
(A) The books review article that covers the most books must be the lengthiest and most cumbersome article to read.
(B) If a book review article is published in the Boatwright Psychology Review, that article will receive the prestigious Boatwright Psychology Review award.
(C) All articles published in the Boatwright Psychology Review must be limited to a certain length specified by the editors.
(D) The Boatwright Psychology Review editors generally prefer book review articles that cover one book rather than two books.
(E) To be nominated for the Boatwright Psychology Review award, a psychologist's book review article must be published in the Boatwright Psychology Review.

My Tick will be on C.......Also where r u getting these Questions from...PLz post some good one,s for SC as well...My weak area..
Loggerhead turtles live and breed in distinct groups, of which some are in the Pacific Ocean and some

are in the Atlantic. New evidence suggests that juvenile pacific loggerheads that feed near the Baja
peninsula hatch in Japanese waters 10,000 kilometers away. Ninety-five percent of the DNA samples
taken from the Baja turtles match those taken from turtles at the Japanese nesting sites.
Which one of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the reasoning above?
(A) Nesting sites of loggerhead turtles have been found off the Pacific coast of North America several
thousand kilometers north of the Baja peninsula.
(B) The distance between nesting sites and feeding sites of Atlantic loggerhead turtles is less than 5,000
kilometers.
(C) Loggerhead hatchlings in Japanese waters have been declining in number for the last decade while
the number of nesting sites near the Baja peninsula had remained constant.
(D) Ninety-five percent of the DNA samples taken from the Baja turtles match those taken from Atlantic
loggerhead turtles.
(E) Commercial aquariums have been successfully breeding Atlantic loggerheads with Pacific
loggerheads fro the last five years.

my take D..

b.................

This is from the CR Bible, I am unable to understand the explanation given, if someone can really dissect this ques, i would really appreciate it !!

Medical Researcher: As expected, records covering the last four years of ten major hospitals indicate that babies born prematurely were more likely to have low birth weights and to suffer from health problems than were babies not born prematurely. These records also indicate that mothers who had received adequate prenatal care were less likely to have low birth weight babies than were mothers who had received inadequate prenatal care. Adequate prenatal care, therefore significantly decreases the risk of low birth weight babies.

Which one of the following, if true most weakens the medical researcher's argument?

a. The hospital records indicate that many babies that are born with normal birth weights are born to mothers who had inadequate prenatal care.
b. Mothers giving birth prematurely are routinely classified by hospitals as having received inadequate prenatal care when the record of the care is not available.
c. The hospital record indicates that low birth weight babies were routinely classified as having been born prematurely.
d. Some babies not born prematurely whose mothers received adequate prenatal care , have low birth weights.
e. Women who receive adequate prenatal care are less likely to to give birth prematurely than are women who do not receive adequate prenatal care

Can u give the source for the OA that you have given, since, this is a question from the CR Bible, and it gives the OA as D.
And IMO as well, it should be D, not B.

I think it should be B.
All premature births may not be because of inadequate prenatal care but all are classified as a case of inadequate prenatal care provided to mother and on this is the whole argument built.

OA?

Is it D....

Hi ,

My take will be B as what i feel that the arguement by the researcher is that - there are health problems and low weight for babies who are born prematurely. Secondly the researcher says, adequate parenting is required for babies to born with normal weight.
Now, here in the above arguement, the logic used by researcher is that if a baby has low weight, it means adequate care was not taken. This will get weaker if the records are manipulated for pre-mature babies to have inadequte care.

Please let me know the answer as well ?

Thanks,
N

The OA is B,
what my doubt is, what is the difference between B & C exactly?

Medical Researcher: As expected, records covering the last four years of ten major hospitals indicate that babies born prematurely were more likely to have low birth weights and to suffer from health problems than were babies not born prematurely. These records also indicate that mothers who had received adequate prenatal care were less likely to have low birth weight babies than were mothers who had received inadequate prenatal care.

In the above sentences there is no arguement from the researcher. He is merely stating wht the hospital records are indicating.

Adequate prenatal care, therefore significantly decreases the risk of low birth weight babies.
The above sentence is the arguement and B option is weakening this arguement but C is not.

Plz correct me if I am wrong..:splat:

Because of the recent transformation of the market, Quore Inc. must increase productivity 10 percent over the course of the next two years or it will certainly go bankrupt. In fact, however, Quore's production structure is such that if a 10 percent productivity increase is possible, then a 20 percent increase is attainable.
If the statements above are true, which one of the following must on the basis of them also be true?
(A) It is only Quore's production structure that makes it possible fro Quore to survive the transformation of the market.
(B) Quore will not go bankrupt if it achieves a productivity increase of 20 percent over the next two years.
(C) If the market had not been transformed, Quore would have required no productivity increase in order to avoid bankruptcy.
(D) Because of the transformation of the market Quore will achieve a productivity increase of 10 percent over the next two years.
(E) If a 20 percent productivity increase is unattainable for Quore, then it must go bankrupt.

Confusion in B and E

Hi Sausi,

Even i was confused between B and C, but i elimanted C on the basis, that the arguement given by the researcher was related to Adequate parenting is required for good health of babies. Now in option C, there is no link given regarding the Adequate parenting.

Hope this suffice,

The OA is B,
what my doubt is, what is the difference between B & C exactly?

Hi Atul,

Would go for B , as i feel E is incorrect. Quore Inc. requires 10 percent over the course of next 2 years to avoid going bankrupt. Now, lets say if the company has 19% increase in next 2 years, it wont go bankrupt.

So , E according to me is false.

Please let me know if you feel otherwise.

Cheers,
N

Confusion in B and E

B is correct, i believe.

E cannot be correct, since the increase reqd is 10%, over the next 2 years, E states 20% and no time frame is stated(plus it says about bankruptcy, directly contradicting the argument in the stimulus )

Confusion in B and E

Can someone help me with the following?

Guidebook writer: I have visited hotels throughout the country and have noticed that in those built before 1930 the quality of the original carpentry work is generally superior to that in hotels built afterward. Clearly carpenters working on hotels before 1930 typically
worked with more skill, care, and effort than carpenters who have worked on hotels built subsequently.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the guidebook writers argument?
A. The quality of original carpentry in hotels is generally far superior to the quality of original carpentry in other structures, such as houses and stores.

B. Hotels built since 1930 can generally accommodate more guests than those built before 1930.

C. The materials available to carpenters working before 1930 were not significantly different in quality from the materials available to carpenters working after 1930.

D. The better the quality of original carpentry in a building, the less likely that building is to fall into disuse and be demolished.

E. The average length of apprenticeship for carpenters has declined significantly since 1930.

The answer book says : "ANSWER: D If the lousy carpentry work was demolished, then only the best carpentry from before 1930 remains and we can't logically make the comparison that is drawn in the argument."

Cant really make sense out of it..... is the logical portion of my brain rusty ???? :(

D. The better the quality of original carpentry in a building, the less likely that building is to fall into disuse and be demolished.

E. The average length of apprenticeship for carpenters has declined significantly since 1930.

I think D weakens the arguement by letting us know that out of the buildings that were built before 1930 only those have survived that have excellent carpentry.
Now the general carpentry of today is compared with the best of wht was before 1930 and have survived rill today and not the general carpentry before 1930.
So the arguement:
'Clearly carpenters working on hotels before 1930 typically
worked with more skill, care, and effort than carpenters who have worked on hotels built subsequently.'

is clearly weakened by option D.

All of John's friends say they know someone who has smoked 40 cigarettes a day for the past 40 years and yet who is really fit and well. John does not know anyone like that and it is quite certain that he is not unique among his friends in this respect.
If the statements in the passage are true, then which one of the following must also be true?
(A) Smoking often lie about how much they smoke.
(B) People often knowingly exaggerate without intending to lie.
(C) All John's friends know the same lifelong heavy smoker.
(D) Most of John's friends are not telling the truth.
(E) Some of John's friends are not telling the truth
