Hello Guys
This is suren new to this blog. I have 13 years of bkg. experience.
Although this thread replies to most of general queries however I would appreciate if somebody can clarify some basic and specific questions on FRM:
1. How much is the application / usage of FRM in real world ?
2. Is the Exam too difficult for a non-engg. student. and Is 3-4 months study sufficient to crack it?
3. Apart from Jorion Book and Schweser notes, will Core reading be required to complete the course.
Many Thanks
Hi Andy,
Membership Fees are fees thats charged by GARP from a candidate who is FRM qualified.
For the efficient functioning of the FRM designation, GARP incurrs costs for funding the programs, curriculum development, Research and development etc. So they charge these fees from FRM candidates, for the smooth functioinng and development of this designation.
What this essentially means to us is, If one happens to clear the exam and complete work ex requirement of FRM. They can use the designation FRM alongside their name. If the candidate doesnt pay the membership Fees, he ceases the authority to use the FRM designation.
cheers,
Shyam
To be honest I wonder what kind of help someone can offer here as we al are aspirants ourselves. So better try contacting them on phone as some 100 bucks is nothing to get a clear picture on 20,000 plus transaction.:)
I still have to initiate the process of registration but would like to get some clarification on the membership fees as read somewhere on this thread that they will deduct some annual membership fees every year??:-| Is this mandatory, as I doubt if there are any serious benefits involved against the same.
Andy

Hi Suren,
Welcome to PG
Lol - This isnt a blog but a forum
My 5 cents on ur questions
1. How much is the application / usage of FRM in real world ?
FRM exam conducted by GARP is a professional exam (like CA, CPA) in the area of Risk Management. Its syllabus is updated every year inorder to equip the candidates with the latest developments in Risk Management.
FRM exam is structured in such a way so as to equip the candidates with the knowledge required in all the pillars of Risk Management and the exam is highly application based, which explains its low pass percentage.
There was one GARP candidate brochure on GARP website, which enlisted the employers of GARP candidates. The list included best of the best institutions in finance, the world over (Please search through the GARP website, I dont have that URL currently with me)
2. Is the Exam too difficult for a non-engg. student. and Is 3-4 months study sufficient to crack it?
A non-engg student can definitely crack the exam, but a 3-4 months prep time is not sufficient to crack the exam.
The exam is damn difficult to crack.
3. Apart from Jorion Book and Schweser notes, will Core reading be required to complete the course.
Its highly advisable to have all the three study materials for exam prepn.

Shyam

Does anybody have the ebooks for the books that GARP suggests in its core reading material i.e. the AIM Statements? have been searching high and low and i simply cannot find Essentials of Econometrics by Gujrati or the Robert MacDonald book.
And yes, before u guys telll me this, I am very much aware of the Laxmi Xerox thing but I'm relocating abroad soon and I cant lug away 10 kgs of books alone on a flight. 😃
Any help will be very gratefully received. Thanks anyways

Has anybody attended any training session!
I heard from someone attending Prinstine Careers is that its ok ok.
They are only providing summary notes, which I guess noting the fact that Schweser Notes are not available till May, is not so comforting.
There sessions also are little faster. Completing in 5 weekends.
Still few may find it good that it would be complete soon.
Another institute IQFI had told that they would provide extensive notes.
I dint hear any comment/feedback so far about them.
Even on this forum also nowhere there name is mentioned.
It's also not sure what kind of material they will provide? Credentials??
I need to join one training institute to test my preparations.
Pls suggest.
Who else is interested?

Hi guys and girls,
This is Coumar and I am new in this forum. I graduated as an engineer and now working as consultant for a financial services company.
I am taking FRM 2008. First, thanks for all the infos given in this thread.
I need your advice to chose the calculator for the exam. Which one of the two calculator is the better one?
Texas Instruments BA II Plus (including BA II Plus Professional)Hewlett Packard 12C (including the HP 12C Platinum)
I used to work with TI material during studies, but never tested HP.
Also, could you please advice me on the course providers. I am hesitating between schweser and bionicturtle.
Cheers,
Coumar
Hi,
I need help on GARP exam . I have enrolled for 2008 FRM exam . i am taking coaching with bionicturtle , now I heard we also need to go through core readings provided by GARP institute , can you advice me on how to obtain core readings and how essential are they
Hey me too interested in joining pristine please include me in the group
I an an Indian in Pittsburgh and am taking FRm 2008 . I am using bionic turtle which is very good but apart from that you will require core reading . I have asked my folks in India to send core material from Lakshmi copy , better get that when coming and join some thing here . Bionic turtle costs $300 but worth it
How many hours of study will it take to crack the exam , seems highly quantitative in nature
Can we share bionic material too
Hi Coumar,
Welcome to PG :poketounge:
Hi guys and girls,
First of all, let me clarify to you that there are currently No girls on this thread. So its just the boys.
I would advise you to go with TI BA II Professional or Plus and not the HP one. Thats because, all the Schweser Notes of FRM or CFA will give explanations and calculations to numericals with the help of TI BA II PLus calculator.
Between Plus and professional, Professional is a bit more advanced and contains more functions than the Plus calci.
Regarding Schweser and Bionic Turtle - I would advise you to go with both of them. If thats not possible, One should go with Schweser.
cheers,
Shyam

Hi Ravi,
GARP recommends around 150 - 200 hrs of preparation time. But this should vary according to the candidates educational background.
Yes, FRM exam is highly quantitative. you will be using your calci for 75-85 % Qs on the exam
