1. China tops clean energy job creation list; India ranked 5th

(i) The International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), in its Annual Review 2016, has placed China in the top spot as regards renewable energy job creation. In China, 3.5 million are employed in this sector.

(ii) Brazil holds the second place with 918,000, followed by the US. India is at the fifth spot, with 416000 jobs. The solar photovoltaic (PV) sector continues to be the largest clean energy employer worldwide, with 2.8 million jobs.

(iii) As per Irena, there was a 5% rise over a year back in this sector, with new jobs being created though employment in the wider energy sector fell. Regardless of future developments in manufacturing, attaining Indian government's aim of 100 gigawatts (GW) in PVs by 2022 could create 1.1 million jobs in construction, project commissioning & design, business development and operations & maintenance.

(iv) The report titled 'Renewable Energy & Jobs' states that 30% of the new jobs would be skilled, which therefore, necessitates improvement of training and education.

2. India gets its first Nuclear Operator's Liability Policy

(i) India's first Nuclear Operator's Liability Policy has been issued to the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, guaranteed by a consortium of insurance companies through the India Nuclear Insurance Pool, which is wholly backed by domestic companies and is managed by General Insurance Corporation.

(ii) The policy was the only missing tool from the set of pre-requisites for gaining private investment in nuclear power, which was not forthcoming because nuclear risks are usually excluded by insurers. Nuclear power operators have a maximum liability of Rs.1,500 crore under this policy.

(iii) The pool would also enable supply of nuclear fuel as it would also cover the Nuclear Suppliers Liability.

3. Panel instituted to investigate mounting NPAs of power PSUs

(i) Centre has set up a panel to look into rising NPAs of public sector power sector financers like Power Finance Corporation (PFC) and Rural Electrification Corporation (REC).

(ii) Gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of PFC were 3.15% of its loan assets as on March 31 as against 1.16% a year back. Gross NPAs of REC amounted to around 1.71% of its loan assets.

(iii) The three-member committee will comprise independent directors of the companies and a senior official of the power ministry.

(iv) The companies have increased their focus on clean energy projects as power firms have deferred their plans to expand or establish new thermal coal-based plants.

4. Sunil Mittal conferred with Harvard Alumni award

(i) Bharti Enterprises founder and Chairman Sunil Mittal has been conferred with this year's Harvard Business School Alumni Achievement Award.

(ii) Presented every year since 1968, the award is the highest honour the School bestows on its alumni who have made significant contributions to their communities while maintaining high values.

(iii)  He has been serving in HBS Board of Dean's Advisors since 2010.

5. Ashok Leyland re-appoints Vinod K Dasari as MD

(i) Automobile manufacturing firm Ashok Leyland has re-appointed Vinod K Dasari as MD for a period of five years

6. Baciro Dja appointed as PM of Guinea Bissau

(i) President of Guinea Bissau has named Baciro Dja as the Prime Minister of the country amid protests, as per a presidential decree.

(ii) Dja succeeds Carlos Correia, who was sacked in early May. However, the ruling party has stated that it would not back Dja, who was PM for a brief period last year, but had to resign when the Supreme Court ruled that the appointment was made without conferring with political parties and was thus unconstitutional.

(iii) Guinea Bissau is a former Portuguese colony that has not had a democratically elected leader serve a full term since its independence in 1974. It has witnessed nine coups or attempted coups since 1980, and the unrest has led to the West African nation becoming a major transit point for cocaine trafficked from South America to Europe.

7. Indian-American wins National Geographic Bee competition

(i) Rishi Nair, a 12-year-old Indian-American student, has won the coveted $50,000 National Geographic Bee competition this year in which Indian-origin contestants bagged all the top three prizes.

(ii) This is the fifth year in a row that an Indian-American has won the national tournament. Last year Karan Menon had won the competition.

(iii) The 28th edition of the annual competition saw Nair getting a $50,000 scholarship and a lifetime membership to the National Geographic Society.

(iv) Fourteen-year-old Saketh Jonnalagadda from Massachusetts was the runner-up and winner of the $25,000 college scholarship. The third prize which gave the winner a $10,000 college scholarship was grabbed by Kapil Nathan, a sixth-grader from Alabama.

8. Adverse climate to harm tea cultivation in north-east: Report

(i) The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the UN has released a report of the Working Group on Tea on Climate Change at the 22nd session of the Intergovernmental Group on tea held at Naivasha, Kenya.

(ii) India chaired the working group supported by Sri Lanka, China and Kenya. As per the report, tea growing regions in Kenya, Sri Lanka and north east India are quite susceptible to climate change and the adaptation measures need to be adopted.

(iii) Some of the salient suggestions include - development of plants/crops suitable for drought and water-logging tolerance, more reliance on seed-based high yielding quality plants/crops.

(iv) The report states that since fertilizers are vital for higher yield, focus should be on integrated nutrient management, among other measures.

(v) The 22nd session was attended by over 20 tea producing and consuming countries. The Indian delegation was led by Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Chairman, Tea Board of India.

9. Committee formed to make India a cashless economy

(i) Reducing cash transactions has been one of the major goals of the Reserve Bank of India and the government. In this regard, a seven-membered committee has been instituted underNeeraj Kumar Gupta.

(ii) This panel is exploring ways to ensure and increase the acceptance of card payments. This will require more of point-of-sales (PoS) machines. 

(iii) RBI's March 2016 data shows 24.5 million credit cards and 661.8 million debit cards in the country, compared to 1.3 million PoS terminals.

(iv) The panel is also thinking of ways in which card users need not have to pay a surcharge for fuel, utility bills and railway bookings.

10. Journalist Rana Ayyub's book Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover-Up released

(i) Journalist Rana Ayyub's book titled Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover-Up has been released.

(ii) The book is an account of an eight-month long covert investigation by the journalist, who posed as Maithili Tyagi, a filmmaker from the American Film Institute Conservatory, in order to probe into the Gujarat riots.

(iii) The book recounts the story of fake encounters and the murder of state Home Minister Haren Pandya. The transcripts of the sting operation expose the collusion of the state and its officials in orchestrating the 2002 pogrom.

1. Telangana Government signs Mou with US-based Eclat Health Solutions

a) The Telangana government signed an MoU with US-based Eclat Health Solutions as per which the healthcare tech firm will invest $15 million in the state and create 1,000 jobs.

b) Further, another agreement was signed between the state government and Monif Matouk, Chairman, Genesis Pharmaceuticals and Afi Hasan, CEO Safye Holdings.

2. Cabinet approves NBCC's takeover of Hindustan Steelworks Construction Limited

a) The financial restructuring of Hindustan Steelworks Construction Limited has been approved along with its takeover by National Buildings Construction Corporation Limited (NBCC), a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Urban Development.

b) The decision aims to benefit both HSCL and NBCC from each other's resources, manpower and expertise.

c) Key features of the financial restructuring of HSCL:

. The paid up equity capital of the HSCL is 117.1 crore rupees.

. NBCC will infuse funds of 35.7 crore rupees as equity into HSCL.

. HSCL will become subsidiary of NBCC with NBCC holding 51 percent equity holding.

3. Frances Arnold becomes first woman to win Millennium Technology Prize

a) Bioengineering and Biochemistry expert Frances Arnold was recently awarded the Millennium Technology Prize, 2016 for directed evolution method.

b) Her discovery mimics natural evolution to create new and better proteins in the laboratory.

c) It is one of the most prominent awards for technological innovations that enhance the quality of people's lives. The €1 million prize is given biennially and Professor Arnold is the first woman to have won the award in its 12-year history.


4. List of Scheduled Tribes modified in 5 states

a) The Union Cabinet has given ex-post facto approval to amendments in the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950.

b) Two bills have been proposed that seek to modify the existing list of Scheduled Tribes in five states, namely Assam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, and Tripura and identify new communities in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

c) Members of the communities included in the list of Scheduled Tribes will be able to derive benefits meant for them Scheduled Tribes under schemes. Further, existing entries in list of Scheduled Castes (SCs) in case of Jharkhand and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) /Most Backward Classes (MBCs) of Central /State lists would be modified.

5. Union HRD Minister launches multilingual dictionary app Bharatvani

a) Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani launched Bharatvani, the largest online repository for dictionaries in India.

b) It is the largest language website in the world and will facilitate online cross-lingual courses enabling people to learn any language. The app has incorporated 22 scheduled languages and will be extended to 100 languages within a year.

c) The all-inclusive app is said to have six sections and the portal will document Indian languages and literatures in digital/electronic format; formulate, design scripts, typography codes; prepare dictionaries and glossaries; translate literally (written and oral text) and knowledge texts into modern and classical languages. It will also provide online language teaching, learning and language teacher training.

6. Draft Model Rules 2016 under Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 released

a) Draft Model Rules 2016 has been released for effective implementation of Juvenile Justice Act. It will revoke the Model Rules, 2007.

b) It is based on the philosophy of reformation, rehabilitation and social integration. Rather than retribution, it lays procedures for the functioning and composition of Juvenile Justice Boards, adoption, determining the age of the child wherever a claim of juvenility is raised, and offences against children, among other things.

c) As per the new rules, JJ boards will have to conduct preliminary assessment with regard to the child's mental and physical capacity, ability to understand the consequences of the alleged offence and the circumstances in which it was committed within a period of three months. After this, the case can be transferred to a children's court for trial.

d) The draft rules also provide for at least one 'place of safety' for such children in every state with adequate facilities and services for rehabilitation. The new Act not only covers juvenile crimes, it also addresses crimes against children.

e) Several new offences have been added in the JJ Act, 2015 which include the sale and procurement of children for any purpose including illegal adoption; corporal punishment in child care institutions; and offences against disabled children.

7. India's first Passenger Satisfaction Survey conducted at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport

a) The first-ever survey of 'passenger satisfaction' levels of customs clearance process at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport revealed that 69% respondents rated their experience as "better or somewhat better" than their global counterparts.

b) Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) engaged the Research Team of L.N. Welingkar Institute of Management (WE School) in May 2016 to carry out the analysis.

c) With most of the customers giving a satisfactory response, the three key areas for improvement were: Access and availability of information, speed of process and greater transparency of duty assessment process.

8. Cabinet approves incorporation of 6 new IITs; upgrades Indian School of Mines to IIT

a) Six new IITs are set to come up at Tirupati, Palakkad, Dharwar, Bhilai, Goa and Jammu, while ISM Dhanbad will be upgraded to an IIT.

b) The approval will bring the institutes under the ambit of Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The Cabinet also gave ex-post facto approval to set up NIT, Andhra Pradesh, which has been registered as a Society under the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2001.

9. Communist leader KC Mathew dies

a) K.C. Mathew, veteran communist leader, passed away at the age of 92.

b) He was the prime accused in the attack on the Edappally police station in February 1950, which resulted in a witch-hunt of the communists.

10. China signs agreements with Sudan to build 600-megawatt atomic reactor

a) China has signed agreements with its close African ally, Sudan, to develop a 600-megawatt atomic reactor which will be first such project in the African country.

b) The agreements were signed during a three-day visit to Sudan by a Chinese delegation led by Nur Bekri, Head of the National Energy Administration and deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission.

c) China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC) signed two agreements with Sudan on nuclear power development which includes building of the atomic reactor.

11. India emerges as 5th largest producer of e-waste in world: ASSOCHAM-KPMG study

a) India, which has emerged as the second largest market for mobile phones, also ranks fifth in the list of largest producers of e-waste with a contribution of 18.5 lakh metric tonnes of electronic waste.

b) According to a study carried out by ASSOCHAM-KPMG, the rising levels of e-waste generation in India has been a matter of concern in recent years. With over 100 crore mobile phones in circulation, nearly 25% end up in e-waste annually.

c) The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified e-waste management rules, 2016, in which producers are covered under extended producer's' responsibility (EPR). It prescribed a waste collection target of 30% waste generated under EPR for the first two years progressively increasing up to 70% in the seventh year of the rule.

12. Ministry of Railways launches Rail Humsafar Saptaah

a) Rail Humsafar Saptah, a week-long celebration to highlight achievements of the Indian Railway during the last two years of the NDA regime was launched on May 26 and will continue till June 1, 2016.

b) Each day of the week will focus on a particular theme and will be observed as Swachchta Diwas, Satkar Diwas, Sewa Diwas, Satarkata Diwas, Saamanjasya Diwas, Sanyojan Diwas and Sanchaar Diwas.

c) All Zonal Railways will ensure that various passenger amenities works nearing completion would be commissioned during this week.

13. Sanjay Bangar appointed as India's head coach for Zimbabwe tour

a) Former India and Railways all-rounder Sanjay Bangar has been appointed as the head coach for the Indian cricket team's Zimbabwe tour.

b) Former wicketkeeper Abhay Sharma, who has worked with the India 'A', Rest of India and U-19 teams, will be there as the fielding coach.

c) He had served as assistant coach of the Indian team till the World T20.

14. Google wins Java copyright case versus Oracle

a) A federal jury recently concluded that Google's Android operating system does not infringe Oracle-owned copyrights because its re-implementation of 37 Java APIs is protected by "fair use."

b) Oracle claimed that Google stole its pieces of an Oracle programming language called Java and reaped huge benefits in Android phone business. However, the jury unanimously agreed in Google's favour.

15. Noted Marathi writer RG Jadhav dies

a) Marathi literary critic, RG Jadhav has passed away at the age of 83. He was best known for his 91 reflective poems on Mahatma Gandhi.

b) Born in Vadodara, Gujarat, he taught Marathi literature in various colleges, including one in Amravati, Elphinstone College in Mumbai, and also at Milind College in Aurangabad.

c) Prof. Jadhav authored more than 40 works of literary criticism and poetry, including 'Anandacha Doh' (a study on Saint Tukaram), 'Nilee Paha' (a critique of Dalit literature) and most famously, 'Bapu' - his tour de force of 91 reflective poems on Mahatma Gandhi.

16. I&B Ministry frames policy guidelines on Online Central Government advertisements

a) The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has framed criteria for Empanelment of suitable agencies and Rate fixation for advertisements on websites.

b) The basic objective of these guidelines is to form rules for the the release of Government advertisements on websites. Websites which are owned and operated by Indian companies will be entitled for empanelment by Directorate of Advertising & Visual Publicity (DAVP).

c) Websites which are owned and operated by foreign companies will also be entitled for empanelment if they have registered operating branch offices in India for at least one year.

d) A third party website traffic monitoring tool will take up the task of verifying the eligibility of the companies to get empanelled with DAVP which include Unique Users (UU) per month data.

e) The policy requires that the websites shall run the Government ads through a Third Party Ad Server (3-PAS) engaged by DAVP for providing all relevant reports linked with online billing and will be used for verification of bills for payment.

f) As per this policy, the DAVP is the nodal agency for all Central Govt Ministries / Departments for advertising.

17. Centre approves establishment of third NIMZ of India in Odisha

a) A National Investment and Manufacturing zone (NIMZ) is approved by the Central government in the state of Odisha. This is the third NIMZ of India.

b) This will provide jobs to around 1.5 lakh people. It will also facilitate growth of Odisha as a manufacturing hub and to help the Paradip port to grow.

c) In 2014, central government announced setting up of sixteen national investment and manufacturing zones (NIMZs) under National Manufacturing Policy (NMP). The core objective of the NMP is to increase the share of manufacturing sector in the National GDP by 25% and to create around a 100 million jobs over a decade.


18. Committee for Evolution of a National Education Policy submits report to HRD Ministry

a) Committee for Evolution of National Education Policy has finally submitted it's report to the HRD ministry of the Indian central government.

b) A five member committee headed by former cabinet secretary TSR Subramaniam was formed by HRD ministry in October, 2015.

c) The committee has gone through a large number of consultations, recommendations & suggestions. The consultation process included online, grassroots and national level thematic deliberations on 33 themes.


19. Amit Kumar Saroha wins gold in 2016 French Open Athletics Championship

a) Arjuna awardee Indian para Athlete Amit Kumar Saroha bagged the Gold medal in men's club throw (F-51) at the 2016 French Open Athletics Championship in Paris.

b) He broke his own Asian record in Men's club throw by achieving a throw of 26.58 metres. He had set his previous record at World Championship 2015 at Doha.

c) Amit Kumar has already qualified for the 2016 Rio Paralympics. He had previously received gold medal in the Olympic qualifier event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

20. International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2016 observed

a) On 29th May, United Nations observed the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2016 with a theme 'Honouring Our Heroes.'

b) The day is observed to honour more than 3,400 UN Peacekeepers who lost their lives for the cause of peace while serving the UN missions since 1948.

c) The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was started by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 57/129 on 11th December, 2002. This day may 29th is selected because it marks the anniversary of the creation the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in 1948. The creation of UNTSO was the first ever UN peacekeeping mission.

1. Lakshadweep signs 24x7 Power for All document

a) Lakshadweep has become the first Indian union territory to sign a document which will provide 24x7 power supply to each of its households by 2019.

b) The documents provides an action plan to increase solar capacity of the region from 2.15 MW to 8.45 MW. It also pushes for the reduction of AT&C losses from current level of 21 percent to 6.7 percent till 2019.

c) Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) will distribute around 1 lakh LED bulbs in the Union territory. Incandescent lamps/CFL will be replaced with LED bulbs under the Centre's UJALA programme.

d) Around 3,000 streets lights will also be replaced with LEDs.

2. Sunrisers defeat RCB to win 9th IPL title

a) In a nail biting final of the Indian Premier league's 9th season, Hyderabad Sunrisers lifted the cup by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 8 runs in the final played at Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru.

b) This is the first-ever IPL title for the Sunrisers, while RCB lost in the finals for the 3rd time.

c) SRH's Ben Cutting was declared Player of the Match for his all-round performance in the final match. He scored 39 runs and took two wickets.

d) RCB skipper Virat Kohli was declared Player of the Series for his 973 runs in the season including 4 centuries.

3. India launches web portal to promote Net Zero Energy Buildings

a) The Union Ministry of Power with the help of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has launched India's first integrated web portal aimed at promoting Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB).

b) The portal provides detailed information about NZEBs which generate as much energy as they use.

c) The portal also hosts the NZEB alliance which is an industry-wide body set up to drive Indian markets toward highly energy-efficient buildings.

4. Pakke Tiger Reserve wins India Biodiversity Award 2016

a) Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh has bagged the India Biodiversity Award 2016. The reserve is situated in the East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.

b) The prize under the Conservation of Threatened Species category was conferred on the Hornbill Nest Adoption Programme started by Pakke reserve. Also, Biodiversity Management Committee award was given to Hong Niitii, lower subansiri.

c) The biodiversity awards are given by the Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry, National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) and United Nations Development programme (UNDP).

5. IAF successfully test fires land-attack version of BrahMos missile

a) The land attack version of the supersonic cruise missile Brahmos was successfully test fired by the Indian Air Force.

b) The missile destroyed the designated target accurately. The missile system "has empowered all the three wings of the armed forces with anti-ship and land-attack capability.

c) The IAF's land attack version of Brahmos flies at a supersonic speed of Mach 3.

6. Indian author Aditi Krishnakumar receives 2016 Scholastic Asian Book Award

a) Singapore-based Indian author Aditi Krishnakumar has won the Scholastic Asian Book Award for her 32,000-word manuscript 'Codex: The Lost Treasure of the Indus'.

b) Her manuscript will be published by Scholastic India. The manuscript is about the history of Indian civilization.

c) Her manuscript was also shortlisted for the Scholastic Asian Book Award in 2014. She published her first book 'A Whole Summer Long' in 2012.

d) The Scholastic Asian Book Award (SABA) is the joint initiative of the National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS) and Scholastic Asia. The award was founded to promote reading and literature, and champion literary works of Asians.

7. India's growth to rise to 8% in financial year 2019: Fitch

a) According to the latest report released by global rating agency Fitch, India's economic growth rate will accelerate to 8% by March 2019.

b) Fitch also expects 7.5% growth in India's GDP in fiscal year ending in March 2016 and it will further improve to 7.9% by March 2018.

c) Passage of Bankruptcy code will drive betterment Indian economy and it will work as a booster.

8. 56 Indian firms among world's largest public firms: Forbes study

a) Forbes' annual list of the world's 2,000 largest and most powerful public companies have a total of 56 Indian firms.

b) US and Chinese firms dominate the top 9 positions whereas Japan's Toyota has secured the 10th spot. Among the Indian companies, Reliance Industries is at the top position a worldwide rank of 121st.

c) HDFC bank has secured 7th spot in the magazine's list of world's 10 biggest and most powerful companies in the consumer financial services sector.

9. India's Sonia Lather wins silver in World Boxing Championships

a) Indian Boxer Sonia Lather won the silver medal in AIBA Women's World Championship. She was defeated by top-seeded Italian boxer Alessia Mesiano in the finals in Astana, Kazakhstan.

10. Bihar govt, UNICEF and MDM to collaborate to curb malnourishment

a) The Bihar government, UNICEF and the Rajendra Agriculture University, Pusa will join hands to curb malnourishment among women and children in the state.

b) As per the MoU's provision, an Agriculture Nutrition Cell would be set up in the Rajendra Agricultural University in Pusa for assessment of the food in order to keep a check on the quality of food served in 7000 schools across Bihar.

d) UNICEF head of Bihar Yamin Muzumdar emphasised on increased coordination among departments of health, agriculture, social welfare and education, among others to improve nutrition standards among women and children.

11. Indian man removes teeth and gets over 500 tattoos to create a world record

a) A 74-year-old Indian Har Prakash Rishi is all set to be in the Guinness Book of World Records once again with around 366 flag tattoos on his body. He claims to have inked 500 tattoos in total.

b) He holds the Guinness record for putting 496 straws in his mouth. To be able to do this, he had removed all of his teeth.

c) Rishi had also tried to hold 50 burning candles in his mouth to set a record.

12. Indian Coast Guard Ship ARUSH Commissioned

a) The coast guard commander (western sea board) Additional General SPS Basra commissioned the Indian Coast Guard Ship ARUSH at Kochi. It is the 17th ship from the series of 20 fast patrol vessels which are designed by Cochin Shipyard Limited.

b) ARUSH is 50 metre-long and weighs 421 tonnes. It is capable of achieving a maximum speed of 33 knots with an endurance of 1500 nautical miles at an economical speed of 13 knots.

c) It is capable of undertaking close coast operations for coast guards like surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and medical evacuation.

d) The ship has some special features like the Integrated Bridge Management System (IBMS) and Integrated Machinery Control System (IMCS). The ship will be based at Porbandar under the command of the commander, Coast Guard Region (North West).

1. President Mukherjee honours teachers with Malti Gyan Peeth Puraskar 2016

a) President Pranab Mukherjee recently presented the Malti Gyan Peeth Puraskar 2016 to 15 teachers for excellence in the field of academics.

b) The award comprises a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh, a certificate of excellence, a Robe of Honour and a medal.

c) It was instituted by Mohinder Singh Syngle Education and Research Society in honour of its founder Mrs Malti Mohinder Singh Syngle, renowned educationist and social worker.

d) Teachers in Punjab's high and higher secondary public schools receive this award for their outstanding contributions. However, those who already have received a national award are not considered for this honour.

2. Indian-American scientist Arnab De wins Springer Theses Award

a) Indian-American scientist Arnab De has been honoured with the Springer Theses Award for his remarkable research in developing transgenic mice to study a critical tumour-suppressor called A20.

b) He also developed peptide-based prodrugs as therapeutics for diabetes and received the Young Investigator Award at the American Peptide Symposium. Also, his thesis was nominated by New York's Columbia University

c) Springer, a world renowned publisher of books and journals, awards candidates with thesis prize to recognise outstanding PhD research.


d) Internationally, top-ranked research institutes send their best thesis annually for publication in the book series: "Springer Theses: Recognising Outstanding PhD research". Winners also get a cash prize of €500. The research work was highlighted by the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO).

3. Discus thrower Seema Punia qualifies for Rio Olympics

a) Asian Games discus throw gold medal-winner Seema Punia has qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics with a 62.62 metre effort at the Pat Young's Throwers Classic 2016 at Salinas (California) in the US.

b) The 32-year old discus thrower defeated 2008 Olympic discus throw champion Stephanie Brown-Trafton of the US to win the gold medal.

c) This year will be her third appearance in Olympics. Based in Haryana, Punia is the 19th Indian track and field athlete to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

4) Manohar Parrikar inaugurates second submarine assembly workshop in Mazgaon

a) Union Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar inaugurated a submarine assembly workshop in Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.

b) The newly-built Submarine Marine Assembly Workshop is a pre-engineered building structure that will simultaneously handle construction of multiple submarines. Built at a cost of Rs. 153 crore, it aims to assemble five submarines in the workshop at the same time.

c) Features such as rain water harvesting, sewage treatment plan, grey water treatment plant, oily water separator plant for treatment of sewage, grey water and oily water respectively, with zero discharge into the municipal drains are a part of the workshop. This facility will enable MDL to go in for a second line of submarines concurrently.

d) The current construction of Scorpene class submarines is taking place at its East Yard in collaboration with DCNS of France. Kalvari, the first submarine of this class, is expected to join the Indian Navy soon.

5) China to launch its first hack proof Quantum Communication Satellite

a) The first experimental Quantum satellite is ready to be launched in Beijing, China. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) claims that the interceptions (due to use of quantum photons) of these satellites can neither be separated nor duplicated.

b) The project includes launch of a satellite, building of four ground stations for quantum communication and one space quantum teleportation experiment station.

c) The first quantum satellite took five years of effort and will be sent to Jiuquan Satellite launch centre in June.

6) High-speed Spanish Talgo Train trial run to be conducted in India

a) Trial run of a nine-coach Spanish train was conducted on the Bareilly-Moradabad route of Uttar Pradesh as a part of railway ministry's strategy to increase the speed of trains.

b) The 90-km trial run incorporated a 4500 HP diesel engine and was conducted by a joint team of the Railway Design Standards Organisation (RDSO) and Spanish train manufacturer Talgo.

c) The nine-coach Talgo train comprises two Executive Class cars, four Chair Cars, a cafeteria, a power car and a tail-end coach for staff and equipment. It is built to run on curves without getting its speed affected.

d) Talgo's lighter in weight and consumes 30% less energy with speed up to 115 km per hour.

7) Real Madrid wins 2016 European Champions League

a) Real Madrid earned its 11th European Champion title. It defeated city rivals Atletico Madrid through a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw.

b) Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winning penalty in a 5-3 shootout victory against Atletico Madrid. Atletico earlier lost in their two previous finals appearances.

8) NASA successfully deploys Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM)

a) NASA has successfully deployed its first experimental inflatable room attached to the International Space Station (ISS).

b) It is an expandable habitat technology demonstration for the International Space Station which will significantly decrease the amount of transport volume for future space missions.

c) BEAM is set to launch on the 8th SpaceX Commercial Resupply Service mission. The 1,400 kg Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) was built by Las Vegas-based Bigelow Aerospace under a $17 million NASA contract. It supports an AES objective to develop a deep space habitat for human missions beyond Earth orbit.

9) Sushma launches PM's website in 6 regional languages

a) Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official website will now available in six major regional languages, including Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam and Bengali. The aim is to reach out to people across India.

b) Earlier, the PMO website: www.pmindia.gov.in, which highlighted several initiatives of the government, could be viewed only in English and Hindi.

10) Gujarat CM launches campaigns against malnutrition

a) Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel has launched two campaigns 'Bal Amritam' and 'Mission Shakti' to curb malnutrition in Ahwa town in Dangs district.

b) The campaign also focuses on reducing infant and maternity mortality rates in tribal-dominated district to the state's average.

c) The salient features of the campaign are:

i. Iron-rich supplementary food would be provided to children and women residing in both towns and remote forested areas.


ii. Awareness will be created among tribal women about free screening and treatment of breast and cervical cancers at government hospitals.

11) Vice Admiral Girish Luthra takes charge of Western Naval Command

a) Vice Admiral Girish Luthra has been appointed as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of the Western Naval Command.

b) He will succeed Sunil Lanba who will proceed to New Delhi to take over as the Chief of Naval Staff.

c) An alumnus of the National Defence Academy in Pune, Luthra was awarded Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2012 and Vishisht Seva Medal in 2008.

12) Actor Madhavan becomes goodwill ambassador for LEPRA India

a) Actor R Madhavan was recently appointed as the goodwill ambassador for LEPRA India. He will work to create awareness about leprosy and its treatment.

b) LEPRA India is a non-government organisation working in the fields of leprosy, tuberculosis, malaria, HIV or AIDS and community health.

13) India, Australia sign MoU to enhance R&D capabilities in biotech

a) An MoU was signed between India's BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council) and Horticulture Innovation Australia to enhance research and development (R&D) in the field of horticulture.

b) The MoU aims to create and deploy modern tools of plant biotechnology to increase crop productivity in both nations. The funding commitment from BIRAC and Hort Innovation is up to 6 million Australian dollars over a period of three years.

c) The event was presided over by Australian High Commissioner to India Harinder Sidhu and Vijay Raghavan.

14) Actor Suresh Chatwal passes away

a) Veteran film and television actor Suresh Chatwal has passed away. He was last seen on the comedy show "F.I.R.," in which he played a commissioner.

b) Chatwal made his acting debut in the year 1969 with 'Rakhi Rakhi' and was seen in films like 'Karan Arjun', 'Koyla' and 'Munna Bhai MBBS'. He was last seen on the big screen in 'Nakshatra' in 2010.

15) Lewis Hamilton wins Monaco F1 Grand Prix

a) Lewis Hamilton 2016 recently won the Monaco F1 Grand Prix after a close battle with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.

b) The F1 motor race was held at the Circuit de Monaco and was the sixth round of the 2016 season.

c) Lewis Hamilton became only the 15th driver in history to win multiple Monaco Grands Prix. He is a British F1 racing driver from England and races for the Mercedes AMG Petronas team.

1. World No Tobacco Day 2016 observed across the world

a) World No Tobacco Day is annually observed on 31st May to highlight health risks associated with tobacco use, which currently claims lives of 6 million people every year on a global scale.

b) WHO and the Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control invited countries for plain packaging of tobacco products, thereby promoting the theme of this year's World No Tobacco Day "Get ready for plain packaging".

c) Plain packaging of tobacco products reduces their attractiveness by restricting the use of logos, colours, brand images and promotional information other than brand and product names shown in standard colour and font style.

d) In 2012, Australia became the first country to implement plain packaging followed by UK and France in 2016.

2. No tax deduction for PF withdrawals of up to Rs.50,000 from June 1

a) The government recently notified raising of the threshold limit of PF withdrawals for deduction of tax (TDS) from the existing Rs.30,000 to Rs.50,000 due to Finance Act, 2016 amendment in section 192A of Income Tax Act, 1961.

b) Initially, the government had proposed to deduct TDS on PF withdrawals in order to discourage premature withdrawals and encourage long-term savings. With this rule, TDS will be deducted at the rate of 10% provided PAN is submitted. The current changes will be effective from June 1, 2016.

c) However, in case Form 15G or 15H is submitted at the time of withdrawal, TDS will not be deducted.

3. India and US to sign 2 key pacts during Homeland Security Dialogue

a) In July, the two countries are expected to ink two key agreements that would exempt well-known Indian citizens from immigration checks in America and create opportunities for information exchange on terrorists on a real-time basis.

b) The two pacts on Global Entry are: a US Customs and Border Protection programme which will enable speedy clearance of pre-approved, low-risk travellers upon arrival in America and the Homeland Security Presidential Directive-6 (HSPD-6), which will allow access to information on terrorists. These are to be signed during the Homeland Security Dialogue.

c) The US has been insisting for India's inclusion in the Global Entry so that dignitaries like former Presidents, former Prime Ministers, former Union Ministers, film stars, industrialists, etc. could have a hassle-free journey.

d) The HSPD-6 proposes exchange of terrorist screening information between Terrorist Screening Centre (TSC) of the US and an Indian agency.

4. NBCC to launch Ganga cleaning project in Bihar

a) Government-run NBCC is set to launch a Ganga cleaning project in Bihar.

b) NBCC will carry out cleaning of debris, construction of new ghats and modernisation of existing ones, cleaning of the river surface, construction of crematoriums, toilets, etc. It will also set up a village drainage system in order to curb waste discharges into the river.

c) It will carry out projects in 19 towns in Bihar with a budget of Rs.600 crore.

5. Surajit Kar Purkayastha appointed Director General of West Bengal Police

a) Surajit Kar Purkayastha has been appointed as the Director General of West Bengal Police. His appointment will be effective from June 1, 2016.

b) A 1985 IPS officer, Purkayastha will replace G.M.P Reddy.

c) IPS officer Raj Kanojia, DGP (intelligence), will be the new Commandant General and DG of Home Guards in place of D P Tarenia.

6. Ashok Lavasa is the new Finance Secretary

a) Expenditure secretary Ashok Lavasa, a Haryana-cadre IAS officer, has been appointed as the new Finance Secretary.

b) He has replaced Ratan Watal, who retired in April 2016 and has been appointed as principal advisor, social sector, in the NITI Aayog.

c) Prior to this appointment, Lavasa served as the Civil Aviation Secretary and Environment Secretary.

7. Kannada writer D Javare Gowda passes away

a) Noted Kannada writer D. Javare Gowda, popularly known as "De Ja Gow," has passed away at the age of 101.

b) He was a disciple of Kannada doyen and poet K V Puttappa. He was also awarded with the Pampa Prashasti in 1998, Padma Shri in 2003, and the Guru Award in 2003.

c) For his contributions to literature and the Kannada language, the Karnataka government honoured him with the Karnataka Ratna (2008) and the Nadoja title (2003).

d) Some of his famous works include Lakshmisha Jaimini Bharata (1957), Kanakadasara Nalacharitre (1959), Andayyana Kabbigara Kavya (1965), Chikkupadyayana Rukmangada Charitre (1964), etc.

8. Former Lok Sabha MP Rudra Madhab Ray dies

a) Senior BJP leader and former MP Rudra Madhab Ray has passed away at the age of 79.

b) Ray represented the Kandhamal Lok Sabha on a BJD ticket from 2009-2014. He was an influential leader and good organiser, was associated with a number of activities in social, educational and cultural field.

9. AR Rahman conferred with Japan's Fukuoka Prize 2016

a) Oscar-winning Indian music composer AR Rahman has been conferred with the top Japanese honour Fukuoka prize 2016 for his remarkable contributions toward creating, preserving and showcasing South Asian traditional fusion music.

b) The Fukuoka Prize is an award founded by the city of Fukuoka and the Yokatopia Foundation to honour individuals/organisations for promoting the Asian culture.

c) The prize is given across three categories namely Grand Prize, Academic Prize, and Arts and Culture Prize. Last year, noted Indian historian Ramachandra Guha was conferred with the Fukuoka Academic Prize.


10. Kohli named T20 Player of Year in Ceat Award event

a) CEAT Cricket Awards 2016 were recently conferred on players. Ace Indian batsman Virat Kohli earned the title 'Ceat T20 Player of the Year', while former Indian team captain Dilip Vengsarkar was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

11. 42nd G7 Summit concluded in Japan

a) The 42nd G7 Summit recently concluded in Japan from May 26 to May 27. Besides discussing several issues of global significance, the countries also approved the G7 Ise-Shima Leaders' Declaration.

b) Issues pertaining to climate change, renewable energy, health, global economy and trade, development, and quality infrastructure investment were discussed by the leaders.

c) The summit was the first one to be held after the adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda by the UN in September 2015 and assumed greater importance.

12. Snapdeal opens data sciences centre in California

a) Online marketplace Snapdeal has set up a data sciences centre in San Carlos, California to attract top global talent and create high-value solutions.

b) The centre will focus on big-data and advanced analytics to add clarity to Snapdeal's consumer-centric initiatives, help mould business strategy and optimise the operational efficiencies using data.

c) Headed by Nitin Sharma, the centre houses experienced data scientists from leading global brands like Groupon, Google, Yahoo and Amazon.

13. JICA to provide Rs. 1,548 cr for TN urban healthcare

a) The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has made an agreement with Indian government to provide a loan of Rs.1,548 crore to enhance the quality of urban healthcare services in Tamil Nadu.

b) The Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan will be provided at an interest rate of 0.3% for 40 years (including a 10-year grace period). It will be used to increase the capacity of key hospitals, upgrading facilities, equipment and human resources. The aim is to reduce cases of non-communicable diseases.

14. ONGC Videsh signs pact with SOCAR Trading

a) The overseas arm of ONGC, ONGC Videsh Ltd. has recently signed a pact with Azerbaijan's state-owned energy company SOCAR to enter oil trade.

b) The pact is aimed at exploring the possibility of joint marketing of OVL's crude oil portfolio by leveraging SOCAR experience in oil trading.

c) OVL had earlier bought a 2.7% stake in Azerbaijan's Azeri-Chirag-Guneshlithe (ACG) field from US-based Hess for $1 billion.

d) SOCAR Trading is the marketing and development arm of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR). It was established in December 2007 with a mandate to market Azeri barrels produced from the ACG field and other surrounding fields in the country.


15. Alastair Cook becomes youngest cricketer to score 10000 Test runs

a) England's cricket team captain Alastair Cook has become the youngest cricketer to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. He achieved this feat while playing the second Test match in Sri Lanka.

b) He replaced former captain Andrew Strauss in 2011 and became the permanent Test captain in 2012.

c) Cook scored his 23rd century against India in 2012 to become the highest Test century-maker for England, and became the youngest player to pass the 7,000-run mark.

c) He surpassed Graham Gooch's 8,900-run mark against New Zealand in 2015 to become England's leading Test-run scorer.

d) He is the 12th player from any country to score 10,000 runs in Test matches.



16. Indian Railways, PEC sign MoU to set up Kalpana Chawla Chair on Geospatial Technology

a) The Union Ministry of Railways and PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up Kalpana Chawla Chair on Geospatial Technology for Indian Railways at the University.

b) The objective is to promote research in geospatial technology and to strengthen Indian Railways, especially railway projects.

c) It is named after late Kalpana Chawla, who was an Indo-American Astronaut and student of PEC during 1978-82.




1. Draft Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill 2016 released

a) The Draft Trafficking of Persons (prevention, Protection & Rehabilitation) Bill, 2016 was recently launched by Union Women and Child Development minister Maneka Gandhi.

b) The bill is aimed at preventing the trafficking of persons and protecting them and help them to rehabilitate. The bill corks several loopholes in the age old laws against human trafficking such as, Indian Penal Code, 1860, Criminal Procedure Code, 1973 and Offenders Act, 1958.

c) The bill recognises new offences such as disclosure of identity of the victim of trafficking and witness, use of narcotic drug or psychotropic substance or alcohol for the purpose of trafficking and use of chemical substance or hormones for the purpose of exploitation.

d) As per this bill, trafficking related offences a cognisable and non-bailable offence notwithstanding anything contained in the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. Special new courts to tackle the trafficking cases will be created under this bill. Such courts can be created by state government in consultation with the Chief Justice of the HC by specifying for each district, a Court of Session to be a Special Court.

e) Special investigating agencies, investigative officers & welfare officer can be created against trafficking. The bill makes a provision for establishment of Protection Homes and Special Homes for short term and long term rehabilitation support.

f) The bill envisages for creation of an Anti Trafficking fund for implementation of act and rehabilitation of victims. It has also made provisions for 3 tier institutional mechanism at centre, state and district level for effective implementation of act.



2. Government raises retirement age of doctors to 65

a) Government recently raised the retirement age of doctors of central services to 65 years of age with a view to to strengthen the healthcare sector and improve public health service in the country.

b) The move will enable the government to retain experienced doctors for a longer period, and to provide better services in its public health facilities, particularly to the poorest, who are entirely dependent on public facilities.

c) According to WHO criteria, the number of doctors needed were very less in India i.e 1 per 1700 people instead of 1 per 1000 people and this step will help in providing additional doctors in the health pool of the country.


3. India and Morocco have finalized five MoUs to enhance cooperation in various fields

a) To improve the bilateral relation between the countries, India & Morocco have recently signed five Memorandum of Understanding. Two MoUs on cultural cooperation and institutional training were signed between visiting Vice President Hamid Ansari & Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane. They are aimed at Cultural Exchange and Institutional Training for Foreign Service officers

b) The other three MoUs are about Water Resources, Television Broadcasting and Education. The two sides identified new areas of mutual cooperation which included information technology.



4. India and World Bank sign agreement for efficient bus service

a) A $9.2 million grant agreement was recently signed between India & the World bank for the 'Efficient and Sustainable City Bus Service Project'. The grant is given under World Bank- Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Programme.

b) This project is aimed at improving the efficiency of the transport and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

c) Demonstration cities where the various initiatives for improving city bus services will be undertaken are Mira Bhayandar in Maharashtra,Chandigarh, Jaipur, and Bhopal.

d) The project will focus on modernizing the city bus service through modern depots to improve the maintenance. The project will also bring modern intelligent transport systems and management information system.


5. India and Morocco launch Chamber of Commerce and Industry

a) India & Morocco have jointly launched the Chamber of commerce & Industry to boost bilateral commercial engagements.

b) It was launched by visiting Vice President Hamid Ansari and Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane.

c) The bilateral trade between the two countries stood at $ 1.26 billion in 2015 with Indian exports forming roughly 25 per cent of the trade volume. Various Indian firms now favouring Morocco as an investment destination. Till now, Indian firms have invested &320 million in Morocco including in the flagship project, the Indo-Maroc Phosphore SA joint venture.


6. Asia's largest tech trade show COMPUTEX kicks off in Taipei

a) COMPUTEX, Asia's largest technology trade show begun at Taipei on 31 May 2016 which showed a participation of more than 1600 companies from 30 countries to showcase their latest products.

b) Taiwan's HTC drew the most media attention for its Virtual Reality (VR) headset Vive that debuted in February 2016.

c) MSI came up with its first backpack-sized PC for VR gaming. It allows players to carry the computer around without tripping over wires while playing with VR headsets.

d) COMPUTEX became the biggest trade show with the highest number of nations participating in last five years and is expected to attract around 1,30,000 people to the on going event.


7. World's longest rail tunnel set to run in Switzerland

a) World's longest and deepest rail tunnel, Gotthard Base tunnel, is set to run through Alps after 17 years of investment.

b) It is also the first flat low-level route through the Swiss Alps.

c) With a length of 57.09 km and a total of 151.84 km of tunnels, it is expected to make rail freight more efficient partly by supporting heavier cargo, which should reduce the number of smoke emitting lorries and other heavy vehicles on the roads thus improving traffic and curbing pollution.


8. China launches Ziyuan III 02 and two other foreign satellites

a) China successfully launched a new civilian high-resolution mapping satellite, Ziyuan III 02, along with two NewSat satellites developed by URUGUS S A.

b) Ziyuan III 02 will join its predecessor Ziyuan III 01, launched in January 2012 to form a network and capture high-definition 3-D images and multispectral data.

c) Ziyuan III 02 satellite took off on the back of a Long March 4B rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in northern Shanxi Province. All the three satellites launched have successfully entered its preset orbit.

d) The Ziyuan III 02 satellite will be used for land resource surveys, natural disaster prevention, agricultural development, water resource management and urban planning, among other applications.


9. BS Bassi appointed as UPSC Member

a) Former Delhi Police Commissioner, BS Bassi has been appointed as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) member for a term of five years, February 2021.

b) He is an officer of Indian Police Service of Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre of 1977 batch.


10. Veteran Comedian and Bollywood actor Razzak Khan passes away

a) Popular TV actor and comedian Razzak Khan passed away after suffering from a cardiac arrest.

b) He made his Bollywood debut in 1993 with Boney Kapoor's production venture Roop ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and acted in more than 90 films in a career of over two decades.


11. Sri Lanka's Nuwan Kulasekara announces his retirement from Test Cricket

a) Sri Lankan pace bowler, Nuwan Kulasekera, announced his retirement from Test Cricket with immediate effect.

b) The 33-year-old Kulasekara Kulasekara played the last of his 21 Tests against England at Lord's two years ago but has been a standout performer in one-dayers, with 186 wickets from 173 matches, and was ranked the top ODI bowler in March 2009.


12. UP Government approves Detailed Project Report of Varanasi Metro Rail

a) The Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Metro Rail Project in Varanasi was recently approved by Uttar Pradesh state government. This report is prepared by RITES , an Indian railway Undertaking.

b) As per this report, the corridors of 29.23km length have been proposed, of which one will be of 19.35 km between BHEL BSE 1.44 % to BHU and another of 9.885 km between Beniya Bagh to Sarnath. There will be 17 stations between BHEL & BHU whereas between Beniya Bagh to Sarnath, there will be total of 9 stations.

c) The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 13,133 crore.


13. World Milk Day observed globally

a) With an intent to emphasize the nutritional value and economic importance of milk, World Milk day was celebrated globally on 1st June, 2016.

b) World Milk day celebration was an initiative of UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) which first begun in 2001. FAO actively encourages milk and dairy consumption as part of a daily diet.

c) India celebrates National Milk Day on 26 November in memory of Dr Verghese Kurien, Father of India's White Revolution. The first National Milk Day was observed on 14 November 2014.


14. Direct Tax Dispute Resolution Scheme 2016 comes into force

a) On 1st of June, 2016, the direct tax dispute resolution scheme 2016 came into force. This scheme was unveiled in the fiscal budget 2016 and it is incorporated in the Chapter X of the Finance Act, 2016.

b) Declarant can do a file declaration in Form-1 to the designated authority not below the rank of Commissioner. IN 60 days from the date of declaration, the designated authority will determine the amount payable by the declarant. After passing such order by designated authority, the declarant will pay the sum within 30 days and furnish a proof of sum. Any amount paid in pursuance of declaration shall not be refundable.

c) This scheme is aimed at resolving cases pending in various courts, tribunals, arbitrations or are in mediation under the Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement (BIPA).

d) This scheme will be more beneficial for companies like Vodafone and Cairn which have been facing multi-billion dollar tax liability following retrospective tax amendments made in 2012.

e) Besides this, 6% Equalisation Levy, which will apply on cross border digital transactions.


15. Global Day of Parents observed across the world

a) To celebrate the selfless commitment and to appreciate the efforts of parents worldwide, Global day of Parents is observed on 1st of June, every year.

b) The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2012 and honours parents throughout the world.


16. Fire breaks out at Central Ammunition Depot, Pulgaon

a) A fire had recently broke out at the central Ammunition Depot in Pulgaon, Wardha District in Maharashtra.

b) At least 16 people were killed, including two Army officials. Seventeen Defence Security Corp (DSC) jawans were also injured.

c) The central ammunition depot at Pulgaon is one India's biggest ammunition depot. It's located around 110 km from Nagpur. It recently got an award for using solar energy for disposing expired ammunition.

17. Central Statistical Office releases National GDP Provisional Estimates for 2015-16

a) The provisional estimates of National GDP for 2015-16 was recently released by Central Statistical Office(CSO). It shows the growth at 7.9% in the 4rth quarter of 2015-16 and 7.6% growth in the whole 2015-16.

b) In 2013-14, fiscal deficit was 4.7% and in 2015-15 it was 4.1%. Fiscal deficit of India's GDP stood at 3.9% in 2015-26 as estimated in Budget Expenditure and Revenue Expenditure of 2015-16.

c) It has also shown a good improvement in the Revenue deficit of 2015-16. The revenue deficit of 2015-16 is 2.5% against the 3.2% in 2013-14 and 2.9% in 2014-15. This has happened due to the capital expenditure by the central government.

d) The plan expenditure of 2015-16 is 4,71,081 cores which is almost more than 8,437 cores than that of in 2014-15.

e) The Gross tax Collection has also shown 17% growth if compared to the fiscal 2014-15. It has also shown around 10.74% improvement in GDP in 2015-16.

f) The non tax receipts in 2014-15 were of 1,97,766 crores. In 2015-16, they are improved to 2,50,744 crores.


18. Index of Industrial Production of Eight Core Industries increased by 8.5% in April, 2016

a) As per the recently released, Index of Industrial Production of (IIP) eight core industries for April 2016, there is a 8.5% growth in the total indices of Eight Core Industries than that of April , 2015.

b) The eight core industries comprise 38% of the weight of the items included in the index.

i) Coal : It has the weight of 4.38% in IIP which was decreased by 0.9% in April, 2016. Its cumulative index during April-March 2015-16 increased by 4.6 % over the corresponding period of the previous year.

ii) Crude Oil : It's production has decreased by 2.3% in April 2016 from April 2015. ts cumulative index during April-March 2015-16 decreased by 1.4 %

iii) Natural Gas production : It decreased by 6.8 % in April 2016 from April 2015. Its cumulative index during April-March 2015-16 declined by 4.2 %

iv) Refinery products : It increased by 17.9 % in April 2016 over April 2015. Its cumulative index during April-March 2015-16 increased by 3.8 %.

v) Fertilizer : increased by 7.8 % in April 2016 over April 2015. Its cumulative index during April-March 2015-16 increased by 11.3 %

vi) Steel production: increased by 6.1 % in April 2016 over April 2015. Its cumulative index during April-March 2015-16 declined by 1.4 %

vii) Cement production: increased by 4.4 % in April 2016 over April 2015. Its cumulative index during April-March 2015-16 increased by 4.7 %.

viii) Electricity generation: increased by 14.7 % in April 2016 over April 2015. Its cumulative index during April-March 2015-16 increased by 5.2 %


19. Union Cabinet gave green signal for MoU between DGCA and French Civil Aviation Authority

a) Union cabinet has recently gave it's nod for a MoU between the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India (DGCA) and the French Civil Aviation Authority - Direction Generale de l'Aviation Civile (DGAC) of France to implement Technical Cooperation Programme.

b) the basic objective of this MoU is to promote and implement the Standards and Recommended Practices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The MoU will also prove beneficial for the enhancement of skills of officers, training of engineers, technicians and managers of both the countries.

c) The MoU is valid for a term of four years. The common action plan for both the parties is as follows,

i) By exchanging information concerning the various techniques used to reach the objectives;

ii) By sending French experts or instructors to India for training missions; and

iii) By receiving experts, or instructors of India, in France for training missions.


20. Setting up of India Post Payments Bank is approved by Central government

a) Union cabinet has recently approved the setting up of the India Post Payments Banks (IPPB) as a public limited company under the Department of Posts with 100 per cent government equity.

b) The total corpus allowed for Post Payments bank will be of Rs. 800 Crores. Out of which, Rs. 400 Crores will be equity and Rs. 400 crores will be grant.

c) Cabinet gave approval for the establishment of 650 branches of IPPB in the country which will be linked to the rural post offices. This branches will get operational by September 2017 after they obtain their banking licence from RBI by March 2017.

d) India has 154,000 post offices, of which 139,000 are rural post offices. At present the core banking network of post offices is highest in the country. IIPB will help financial inclusion of a large Indian population in rural areas who is outside the reach of Indian banking industry.


21. Rahul Johri assumes charge as first ever CEO of BCCI

a) Rahul Johri has joined the cricket board as its first ever chief executive officer (CEO).

b) Johri's appointment as CEO, is as per the recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice R.M. Lodha Committee.

c) Before joining BCCI, he last served as Discovery Networks Asia Pacific's Executive Vice-President and General Manager for South Asia.


22. Prime Minister releases India's first National Disaster Management Plan

a) India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released India's first ever National Disaster Management Plan(NDMP).

b) The primary objective of this plan is to tackle national disasters, to make the country disaster resilient and reduce loss of lives and assets during calamities.

c) NDMP has incorporated the four priorities provided in the the Sendai Framework into the planning framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. NDMP's five thematic areas for action are,

  1. Understanding Risk
  2. Inter-Agency Coordination
  3. Investing in DRR - Structural Measures
  4. Investing in DRR - Non-Structural Measures
  5. Capacity Development

d) The Response part of the Plan has identified eighteen broad activities which have been arranged into a matrix to be served as a ready reckoner,

Early Warning, Maps, Satellite inputs, Information Dissemination, Evacuation of People and Animals, Search and Rescue of People and Animals, Medical Care, Drinking Water/ Dewatering Pumps/ Sanitation Facilities/ Public Health, Food & Essential Supplies, Communication, Housing and Temporary Shelters, etc.

e) The National Disaster Management Plan (NDMP) provides a framework and direction to the government agencies for all phases of disaster management cycle.


1. Sachin Tendulkar to be the face for Kerala Government's Anti-Drug Campaign

a) Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar will be a part of Kerala government's awareness campaign against alcohol and drugs details of which will be revealed after a meeting with Sachin's manager.

b) The announcement was made on 1st june by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stating that Tendulkar has given his consent for the same.


2. Centre's green signal for Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase-I

a) Union cabinet approved the proposal for Chennai Metro Rail Phase-I Project from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar. It will cover a length of 9.051 km. The expected budget is Rs. 3770 crore.

b) The project will be executed by the existing SPV of Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu having 50:50 equity of each i.e. Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. The project is expected to be complete by March 2018.

c) This extension will provide improved access to public transport for dense population comprising predominantly industrial workers to move towards the central business district of the city for work.


3. India-US MoU on enhancing cooperation in Wildlife Conservation approved

a) India and the United States recently signed an MoU to strengthen mutual cooperation on conserving wildlife and combating its trafficking.

b) It was signed by Indian Ambassador to the US, Arun K Singh, and Catherine Novelli, Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment, at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department.

c) Under the MoU, the two countries agreed to cooperate and boost their capacities for wildlife conservation and management in India, including efforts to protect critical habitats.

d) India and the US also committed to cooperate regionally and globally for combating of illegal trade in wildlife through capacity building, strengthening cooperation and sharing best practices.

4. The Unseen Indira Gandhi authored by Dr KP Mathur released

a) The Unseen Indira Gandhi authored by Dr KP Mathur was released in May 2016 and is published by Konark Publishers.

b) Dr KP Mathur was personal physician of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for nearly 20 years till her assassination in 1984.

c) The 151 page book provides a glance at responses to challenges in Indira Gandhi's personal and political life. The foreword for the book is written by her granddaughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

5. Indus Valley Civilization is 8000 years old: IIT Kharagpur Research

a) Research findings from various institutes like IIT Kharagpur, Institute of archaeology, Deccan College Pune, Physical Research Laboratory and Archaeological Survey of India indicate that Indus Valley Civilization is much older than thought before and climate was not only the cause behind collapse of Harappan civilization.

b) The finding was published in prestigious journal Nature Scientific report on 25 May 2016 and claims that the Indus Valley Civilisation existed well before the Egyptian (7000 BC to 3000 BC) and Mesopotamian (6500 BC to 3100 BC) civilisations.

c) Also, 'optically stimulated luminescence' was incorporated to date pottery shards of the Early Mature Harappan time which was found to be nearly 6,000 years.

d) As per the report, the research could lead to a major shift in the study of ancient civilisations.


6. India and US sign an agreement on 'exchange of terrorist screening informations

a) India and the US signed an agreement for exchange of intelligence on terror on a real time basis that include biographic information of known and suspected terrorists.

b) The arrangement was signed by Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and US Ambassador to India Richard Verma

c) With signing of the key pact, India has formally entered into the US Homeland Security Presidential Directive-6 (HSPD-6) which is a model text agreement for exchange of terrorist screening information between Terrorist Screening Centre (TSC) of the US and an Indian agency.

d) It will enable the access of 'unclassified biographic information of known and suspected terrorists' maintained by the US on a reciprocal basis.

e) The agreement is expected to enhance the counter terrorism cooperation between India and USA.


7. Government Approves Mau-Tarighat New Railway Line Project

a) The Union cabinet gave a nod for a new broad gauge line between Mau Station of North-Eastern Railway and Tarighat Terminal station of East Central Railway which aims to provide an easy transit to areas separated by river Ganga and boost the socio economic development.

b) With a length of 51 kilometres, the new line runs through the river Ganga at the downstream of the existing road bridge for NH 97 and is located almost parallel to it and joins the existing BG line from Tarighat to Dildar Nagar. It will be alternative route for train passing from Howrah to New Delhi and back.

c) Construction of this line will provide a link to Allahabad-Patna double line electrified section but will decongest the Allahabad-Mughalsarai-Patna route particularly around Mughalsarai yard.


8. TRAI launches mobile app for subscribers to register complaints against pesky calls, SMSes

a) To tighten the noose on telemarketers, regulator Trai today launched a mobile application for telecom subscribers to register their complaints against pesky calls and SMSes in an easy way.

b) The new mobile app will help people in easily filing complaints and help us in monitoring such activities and will be available on Android and Apple iOS soon

c) Earlier options of filing a complaint included forwarding the SMS to 1909 and mentioning the mobile number or inform telecom operators through customer care number or through e-mail.

d) The mobile app will show SMS in a list form and mobile numbers from the source. Customers need to click on the check box to select such SMSes or calls and then click on report option to file complaint.

e) As per rule, Trai has mandated all telecom operators to disconnect telephone numbers from which a pesky call or SMS has originated on receipt of the first complaint.


9. BRICS bank to issue first yuan denominated bonds

a) Shanghai-based New Development Bank (NDB) is set to issue its first yuan-denominated bonds, and is eyeing future funding for infrastructure projects.

b) The bank's first five-year yuan-denominated bonds, also referred as green bonds, will be issued after receiving a rating from international ratings agencies as well as getting authorities' approval said an official statement.

c) India is the only country among the BRICS countries whose GDP continues to grow above seven per cent while the rest of the economies including that of China reported sharp slowdown.


10. ICICI Bank cuts lending rate by 0.05%

a) ICICI bank has recently decided to cut it's marginal cost of funds based lending rate (MCLR) by 0.05% to remain in the competition against the rates offered by SBI & HDFC Bank.

b) This will help reduce the rate of interest to new borrowers. From 1st June, ICICI bank will give loans to new borrowers at 8.95% while the one-year MCLR, to which its housing loans are linked, now comes down to 9.15 per cent.



11. 2 Indian-origin women in Forbes' self-made American women list

a) Two Indian-origin women, Neerja Sethi and Jayshree Ullal, have been listed on the Forbes' annual list of America's 60 wealthiest and most successful self-made women entrepreneurs.

b) India-born Neerja Sethi, co founder of IT consulting and outsourcing firm Syntel with her husband Bharat Desai, ranked 16th on 'America's Richest Self-made Women' list while President and CEO of Arista Networks, Jayshree Ullal (55) stood 30th on the list.

c) Diane Hendricks, the owner of ABC Supply, the largest wholesale distributor of roofing and siding in the country topped the list.


12. German Parliament passes Resolution to recognise Massacre of Armenians as Genocide

a) The German parliament has recently recognised the atrocities inflicted on the 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks starting in 1915.

b) Turkey on other side denies the killing and terms it as victims of civil war and unrest. Turkey has also objected the word 'Genocide' used in this context.

c) This decision of Germany will hamper the Turkish-German relations. The concerns are made over the already fragile Turkey-EU deal over how to handle the ongoing migrant and refugee crisis.

a) Indian Banker, Raghavan Seetharaman, Group CEO of Doha Bank, was honoured with the 'Green Economy Visionary award' at the 2016 Union of Arab Banks International Banking Summit held in Rome

b) He has been awarded for his contribution in environment-friendly activities and for promoting green economy for nearly two decades.

c) In 2015, business magazine Forbes ranked Seetharaman 6th in the Forbes' Top Indian Leaders in the Arab World 2015 list.


14. India joins Hague Code of Conduct against Ballistic Missile Proliferation

a) India has joined the Hague Code of Conduct (HCoC) against Ballistic Missile Proliferation as it's 138th subscribing state by notifying the HCoC central contact in Vienna. It will neither impact on country's national security or country's missile programmes.

b) The HCoC is a voluntary, legally non-binding international confidence building and transparency measure. The core objective of HCoC is to seek to prevent the proliferation of ballistic missiles that are capable of delivering weapons of mass destruction.

c) It intends to supplement the Missile Technology Control Regime which will be administered collectively by all subscribing states.

d) It came into effect on 25th November, 2002 at a conference hosted by Netherlands in The Hague. The number of signatories has increased from 96 to 138.


15. Constitution of National Company Law Tribunal and Appellate Tribunal Notified

a) Union government has constituted National Company Law Tribunal and Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). It will help in expediting adjudication matters under company law.

b) The tribunal and appellate authority are part of the Companies Act, 2003 which came into force from 1st April, 2004.

c) Retired Judge of the SC Justice S J Mukhopadhaya has joined NCLAT as its chairperson and Justice M M Kumar has joined as the president of NCLAT.

d) The NCLAT will have 11 branches across the country including New Delhi & Mumbai. With constitution of NCLAT, the Company Law Board constituted under the Companies Act, 1956 stands dissolved.


16. Tamil actor-director Balu Anand dies at 62

a) Tamil actor and film maker Balu Anand passed away after suffering from a cardiac arrest.

b) The 62-year-old Anand acted in around 100 films and directed a few Tamil movies.

c) Few of his most notable films were "Pistha," "Anbe Sivam," "Anna Nagar Mudhal Theru" and "Nane Raja Naane Mantri." He had also directed films like "Anna Nagar Mudhal Theru." His last directorial film was "Anandha Thollai.


17. Commonwealth Boxing Council grants affiliation to Indian Boxing Council

a) Commonwealth Boxing council has recently received an affiliation from the Indian boxing Council (IBC).

b) The CBC will now formally register Raja as a Director in its Annual General Meeting scheduled in December this year.

c) IBC is the national boxing governing body which sanctions the professional boxing matches. It also confers awards on national and subordinate levels.

18. Singapore International Arbitration Centre to open Representative Office at GIFT City

a) A MoU was recently signed between Singapore International Arbitration centre (SIAC) , Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Company Ltd. (GIFTCL) & GIFT SEZ Ltd. The objective of this MoU is to establish a representative office in India.

b) The representative office will be in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Company Ltd. (GIFTCL) and it will work in resolving the international commercial disputes.

c) The dispute resolution mechanisms include Arb-Med-Arb-Med service. In this process, the dispute is first referred to arbitration before attempting mediation.

19. India, Tunisia sign MoUs for co-operation in IT, handicrafts sector

a) A MoU was recently signed between India & Tunisia for co-operation in the sectors like Information technology and promotion of traditional handicrafts.

b) This MoU was signed in between visiting Vice president of India Hamid Ansari & Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid in Tunis. This MoU will help both the countries to strengthen their bilateral ties in the areas like IT & education.

c) India has also appreciated Tunisia's support to India's candidature to the expanded UN security. India has also given the invited around 350 tunisians to India for the purpose of training over next five years.


20. Minimum support prices for Kharif crops for 2016-17 approved by CCEA

a) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given their nod to new Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for Kharif crops of 2016-17.

b) The prices will come into force from 1 October, 2016. The higher value of MSPs will increase investment and production and it will assure benefits to farmers.

c) The approved MSPs are given by the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) which takes into account the cost of production, overall demand-supply among others.

d) The CCEA has also decided to give bonus of Rs. 425/quintal on Arhar, Urad & moong and Rs. 200/quintal for Sesamum and Rs.100/ quintal for Ground nuts, sunflower seed, Niger Seed and soyaseed.

1. India announces to Double Investment in Clean Energy Research in next five years

a) Union Minister for Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan announced India's plan to double the investment for its clean energy research for a period of next five years.

b) This decision would hike India's current investment from $72 million to $145 million said an official statement

c) The CEM7 and MI meet was held at San Francisco, the US from 1 and 2 June 2016.

The announcement was made along with other MI partner countries who also released plans to double the clean energy research and development funding over the next five years.

d) India announced its collaboration with Britain by setting up a Joint Virtual Clean Energy Centre to address the challenges in solar energy and launching a new Research Track on Smart Energy Grids and Energy Storage under the India-US Partnership to Advance Clean Energy Research.


2. Green signal for BSE's online bidding platform for SGBs

a) Asia's oldest bourse, BSE, received a nod from Reserve Bank to start an online bidding platform for Sovereign Gold Bond scheme.

b) SGBs - government securities denominated in grams of gold - provide an alternative to holding gold in physical form. The bond is issued by RBI on behalf of government and investors can apply for the bonds at the price as circulated by RBI.

c) This bidding platform is part of the iBBS (Internet-based Book Building System) - exchange's existing web-based online bidding platform for IPO, Offer for Sale, offer to buy issues.


3. NK Chari is the new MD of State Bank of Mysore

a) N.K.Chari has been appointed as the new Managing Director of State Bank of Mysore. Prior to this new position, he served as the Deputy Managing Director of State Bank of India.


b) Mr. Chari, a postgraduate in commerce from Delhi University, joined State Bank of India as a Probationary Officer in September 1978.



4. Argentina retain top spot in FIFA rankings

a) Argentina continues to hold its first position while Belgium also ranks 2nd on the list of latest FIFA rankings.

b) India have fallen down one spot to 163, while England have been replaced in the top 10 by Austria.

5. Boxing Legend, Muhammad Ali, passes away

a) Legendary boxing champion, Muhammad Ali, passed away at the age of 74 after battling with prolonged illness.

b) Ali was diagnosed of Parkinson's disease after three years of his retirement from boxing in 1981.

6. Navin Agarwal posted as DG of National Anti-Doping Agency

a) Senior IPS Officer, Navin Agarwal, has been appointed the Director General (DG)/ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).

b) Agarwal is a 1986 batch IPS officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre and is appointed for a period of five years.


7. Asia's first Gyps Vulture Reintroduction Programme launched

a) To promote breeding and conservation of vultures, Haryana Government haas launched Asia's First 'Gyps Vulture Reintroduction Programme' at Jatayu Conservation Breeding Centre, Pinjore.

b) The Union Government became prominent vulture breeding and conservation centre in India after successfully breeding Himalayan Griffon Vultures which is old world vulture in the family of Accipitridae.

c) Vultures play an important role in keeping the environment clean however due to indirect consumption of Diclofenac (used for treating cattle) through cattle carcasses the number of vultures began to decline significantly.

d) With this achievement, the country hopes to have four crores vultures in coming 10 years.

1. Veteran actor Sulabha Deshpande passes away

a) Veteran Hindi and Marathi actor, Sulabha Deshpande passed away recently due to prolonged illness.

b) Among her prominent films were Bhumika, Gaman, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyo Aata Hai, Vijeta, Virasat, English Vinglish, and Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Daastan. On stage, she acted in Marathi plays like Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe, Sakharam Binder, Baba Harvale Aahet, among many others.

c) She was a recipient of the 1987 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindi-Marathi theatre acting.


2. World Environment Day observed on 5th June

a) World Environment Day was globally observed on 5th June, 2016. The theme for this year was Zero tolerance for the illegal trade in wildlife.

b) With the aim of reducing the demand for illegal wildlife products, the campaign stresses that that greed, fashion, ignorance, indifference, investment, corruption, pseudo medicinal use and cultural belief should not be allowed to endanger any species of animal or plant or tree.

c) The host country for the event is Angola. The year's slogan "Go Wild for Life" encourages everyone to spread the word about wildlife crime and the damage it does. It also asks people to challenge all to do what they can to prevent it.

d) To create awareness for environment on this day, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off Tiger Express, a semi-luxury tourist train, from Safdarjung station New Delhi. It was launched with an aim to spread awareness among people on tiger conservation.


3. Sasikumar takes charge as new MD of SBT

a) Senior official C R Sasikumar has taken over as as Managing Director of State Bank of Travancore.

b) Sasikumar started his career as a probationary officer with SBI in 1978 and has since held several key assignments along with overseas assignments.


4. V.O.Chidambaranar Port Bags National Award For Excellence In Cost Management

a) V.O. Chidambaranar Port won the National Award for Excellence in Cost Management for the year 2015 from The Institute of Cost Accountants of India under the category of Public Service Sector- Small. This is the third time this port is receiving the award , the earlier years being 2008 and 2012.

b) He has been awarded for his exemplary performance towards optimization of manpower, savings in electricity, implementation of Solar Energy Systems, reduction of overall cost of handling by mechanization and improvising efficiency and logistics support.

c) The awards under various categories were selected by a Jury panel headed by Honble Justice Mr. V.N.Khare, former Chief Justice of India and persons of eminence from Industry, Government, Judiciary and CMA profession.


5. Khattar inaugurates 'Jai Jawan Awas Yojna' to provide affordable housing to serving, retired JCOs

a) It is an initiative to provide affordable housing to serving and retired JCOs and Other Ranks named as 'Jai Jawan Awas Yojna' was launched recently by CM of Haryana.

b) The project is being executed by Army Welfare Housing Organization and aims to provide low cost housing. This housing project has been named in the memory of Late Major Rajiv Joon, recipient of Ashok Chakra and Shaurya Chakra, who had attained martyrdom fighting militants in Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir

6. World's first 3D-printed aircraft THOR displayed at International Aerospace Exhibition


a) World first ever 3D printed aircraft called THOR by Airbus was recently displayed at the International Aerospace Exhibition in Schoenefeld.

b) THOR is the abbreviation of Test of High-tech Objectives in Reality. It is a 3 part windowless, 3D printed aircraft which weighs just 21 Kg. It is less than 4 metres in length.

c) It is printed using a substance called Polyamide. The giant aviation companies like Airbus and Boeing are already using 3D printing technology to create various parts used in their huge passenger planes.


7. Assam Ease of Doing Business Bill, 2016 passed

a) Assam Ease of Doing Business Bill was recently passed by the Assam state assembly. The bill is aimed at facilitating enterprises to attract most number of investors in the state just by using an easy computerized clearance system.

b) The bill provides speedy processing of applications and issue of clearance for setting up new industries. It also facilitate a pro investment environment in the Assam state.

c) The bill also provides establishment of Assam Bureau of Investment Promotion (ABIP) to supervise and administrate the speedy process of application clearance. This bureau will comprise of Chief Minister as chairman, Industry minister as vice-chairman, Ministers and senior-most secretaries of all the line departments as members, At least three representatives from industry bodies, The Chief Executive Officer of the single window agency will be the member-secretary of the board.

8. Right to Public Grievance Redressal Act 2015 launched in Bihar

a) Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar has recently launched "Right to Public Grievance Redressal Act - 2015" in the state on occasion of jayprakash Narayan's Sampoorna Kranti Diwas.

b) This Act is aimed at empowering people to seek redressal of their grievances in time bound manner.

c) He also inaugurated the State Public Grievances Receipts centre in Patna. The state government had already established Public Grievances Redressal Offices and Grievance Receipts centres in all 38 districts and 101 sub-divisional headquarters across the state.


9. India, Qatar ink 7 agreements to boost cooperation

a) PM Narendra Modi concluded 7 major agreements with Qatar during his five nations visit to Afghanistan, Qatar, Switzerland, United States and Mexico. The deals were made in presence of Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.

b) These MoUs are signed in the sectors like infrastructure investment, Customs administration, financial intelligence unit, skill development, tourism, Health and Youth & sports.

c) These agreements will benefit in strengthening the bilateral ties between India & Qatar.


10. NASA scientists find 39 unreported man-made sources of toxic sulfur dioxide emissions

a) Scientists at NASA, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and two universities with the help a new satellite-based method, have located 39 unreported and major human-made sources of toxic sulfur dioxide emissions.

b) A known health hazard and contributor to acid rain, sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of six air pollutants regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Current, sulfur dioxide monitoring activities include the use of emission inventories that are derived from ground-based measurements and factors, such as fuel usage.

c) The research team also located 75 natural sources of sulfur dioxide like non-erupting volcanoes slowly leaking the toxic gas throughout the year. The study was published in The Nature Geoscience journal on 30 May 2016.


11. HDFC Ergo buys L&T Insurance For Rs 551 crore

a) HDFC Ergo , a joint venture between home loan major HDFC and German insurer Ergo International, will buy L&T General Insurance for Rs 551 crore in the first buyout in the country's general insurance industry.

b) This acquisition will help HDFC Ergo become the third-largest private general insurer, after ICICI Lombard and Bajaj Allianz General Insurance.

c) The combined size and expertise will result in improved cost efficiencies in the merged entity and benefit policyholders and other stakeholders. The acquisition also aims to strengthen company's position in the market.


12. Leander Paes wins to complete mixed doubles 'Career Slam'

a) Mixed doubles team of India's Leander paes and Switzerland's Martina Hingis have clinched the French Open 2016 Mixed Double title by defeating the Indo-Croatian team of Sania Mirza & Ivan Dodig.

b) With this win, Leander Paes has become the 3rd man to to complete a double career Grand Slam (men's and mixed).

c) The other winners of French Open 2016 are as follows :

Men's Single : Novak Djokovic (Serbia)

Women's Single: Garbine Muguruza (Spain)

13. Nita Ambani nominated to International Olympic Committee

a) Founder and chairperson of Reliance Foundation, Nita Ambani has been nominated as a candidate to be a new member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquartered at Lausanne, Switzerland.


b) The election will be held at the 129th IOC Session that will take place in Rio de Janeiro between 2nd and 4th August 2016. The independent selection process follows a new procedure for recruitment of IOC members based on the Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendations. Once elected, she will continue to be a member until the age of 70.


c) The Other seven members nominated are Sari Essayah (Finland), Ivo Ferriani (Italy), Luis Moreno (Colombia), Auvita, Rapilla (Papua New Guinea), Anant Singh (South Africa), Tricia Smith (Canada), Karl Stoss (Austria).



14. V Narayanaswamy to be Puducherry's Chief Minister

a) V Narayanaswamy is named as the Chief Minister of Puducherry after the grand old party held a legislature party meeting

b) Hailing from Poornankuppam village, Mr. Narayanasamy, he is an active Congress leader.


15. Large amount of ammonia gas detected on Jupiter

a) Massive movements of ammonia gas has recently been observed by the researchers from The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley).

b) The researchers used an upgraded version of Karl G Jansky very large array in New Mexico to measure radio emissions from Jupiter's atmosphere.

c) The Jupiter's thermal radio emissions are partially absorbed by ammonia gas. So, on the basis of the amount of absorption, the researchers can determine the amount of ammonia is present on Jupiter and it's depth.

d) These observations will further help to learn the regions of Jupiter's atmospheres, cloud formation and global circulation of Jupiter. The studies will also shed light on the other giant planets in the solar system.

e) Jupiter's ammonia rich gases form upper cloud layers, where the ammonium hydrosulphide cloud (-73 degrees) & ammonia ice cloud (-113 degrees) are formed.

16. Desert Eagle II military exercise concluded

a) Desert Eagle II, which was the second in the series of bilateral exercises between Indian Air Force (IAF) and United Arab Emirates Air Force (UAE AF) was concluded recently.

b) It was a ten day air combat exercise which took place at Al-Dhafra Air Base, Abu Dhabi. India & UAE had signed a defence co-operation agreement called 'Agreement of Defence Co-operation' in 2003.

c) India's IAF Su 30MKI & Mirage 2000-9 have participated in the exercise. From UAE Air Force F-16 block 60 took part. Both the countries previously took part in the Desert Eagle military exercise in 2008.

1. US Army Reserve officer Deshauna Barber crowned as Miss USA 2016

a) Twenty six year old, Deshauna Barber, a serving U.S. Army officer and an IT analyst at the U.S. Department of Commerce, has been declared as Miss USA 2016.

b) She hails from a military family, her father being a retired Army Master Sergeant. She was commissioned as a Quartermaster Officer in 2011 and is currently a Logistics Commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit based at Fort Meade, Maryland.


c) Barber won the pageant ahead of first runner-up Chelsea Hardin, Miss Hawaii, and second runner-up Emanii Davis, Miss Georgia. She will now represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant.



2.Ashok Ganapathy appointed as Director of Airtel Business

a) Bharti Airtel announced the appointment of Ashok Ganapathy as Director for Airtel Business. His appointment will be effective from July 1, 2016.


b) He will report to Gopal Vittal, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel.


c) Ganapathy will replace Manish Prakash who will switch to looking after as Director - Strategic Alliances.

d) Ganapathy joined Bharti Airtel in 2013 as the Hub CEO for Mumbai, Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat circles. He has over 26 years of experience across FMCG, Retail, Entertainment and Telecom sectors.


3. Gujarat Government unveiled IT and Electronics Start-up Policy 2016

a) The Gujarat government recently launched its first IT and Electronics Start-up Policy which will focus on subsidies and state assistance for incubators and start-ups over the next five years.


b) The policy aims at raising an investment of Rs. 7,000 crore and establish 50 incubators to help as many as 2,000 startups flourish over the next five years.


c) The policy will be applicable to IT and electronics-related startups. Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have already put in place IT policies and state assistance to promote startups.


4. Guwahati becomes the first city to have a 'city animal'

a) Assam's Guwahati became the first city in the country to have its own city animal with the district administration declaring the Gangetic river dolphin as the mascot.


b) The decision was made after an online/ offline voting organised by the district administration nominating three animals for the mascot which are on the verge of extinction. The animals included Gangetic river dolphin (Sihu), lack softshell turtle (Bor Kaso) and greater adjutant stork (Hargila).


c) Of the 60,003 participants , Gangetic river dolphin (Sihu) receives maximum share of votes.

5. Delhi Government approves solar policy with 1 GW target by 2020

a) The Delhi government recently announced implementation of its solar policy with the aim of making the national capital a solar city with installation of 1 GW solar power capacity by 2020. This target is proposed to double it to 2 GW during further next five years.


b) The key highlights of the policy include: mandatory deployment of solar panels in govt. Institutions, Virtual net metering to give access to the solar net metering facility for people who cannot install solar system, building bylaws amendment for rooftop solar installations, tax breaks, benefits and subsidies, and solar system up to 200 KWp being exempt from certification by an electrical inspector.


6.Switzerland voters reject unconditional basic income proposal in referendum

a) 77% of the Swiss Voters have rejected the unconditional basic income proposal and remaining 23% have backed it.

b) The proposal had called for adults to be paid an unconditional monthly income, whether they worked or not. The supporters of this proposal have proposed a monthly income of 2,500 Swiss francs every month for adults whether they work or not.

c) The proposal was mainly criticized as there was no plan for funding this costly policy. Even,no parliamentary party has backed the proposal.


7. IOC honours IOA chief N Ramachandran with Olympic Order

a) The International Olympic Committee has awarded the Olympic Order to Indian Olympic Association president N. Ramachandran for his outstanding services to the Olympic movement.

b) He is an Indian squash administrator and became the president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in February 2014.

c) He is the second sports administrator to receive this honour. Former IOA president, the late BS Adityan was the other Indian to be honoured with the same award in 1995.


8. Manohar Aich, India's first Mr Universe passes away

a) Legendary Indian body builder and India's first Mr. Universe, succumbed to age related ailments at the age of 102.


b) A three-time Asian Games gold medalist, he was the first Indian to win the Mr Universe title post-independence in 1952. At 4 feet 11 inch, he famously nicknamed 'Pocket Hercules'.




9. ADB, India ink $200 million loan agreement for Jharkhand roads

a) A $200 million loan agreement is recently signed between Indian government and Asian Development Bank (ADB). the agreement is aimed at upgrading 176 km roads in the Jharkhand

b) The Jharkhand State road II project will upgrade the existing sections of four state roads to two lane standard and design improvement. It will also help in developing an international standard road safety master plan for promoting road safety in Jharkhand.

c) The ADB is supporting the Jharkhand state in improving the road connectivity. The the two projects are rehabilitating 487 kilometres of state highways in Jharkhand.



10. Sudarsan Pattnaik wins gold in People's Choice Prize

a) Internationally renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has won gold medal in people's choice prize at world championship festival of sand sculpting Russe, 2016, Bulgaria for his sand sculpture "Drugs Kill Sports ".


b) Padma Shri awardee sand artist Sudarsan has participated in more than 50 international sand sculpture championships and festivals around the world and won many prizes. His sand sculptures are based on social issues and current topics.


c) Recently, he won gold medal in Moscow for creating sand sculpture on Peace and Nonviolence.


11. Kulmeet Bawa appointed Adobe MD for South Asia

a) Kulmeet Bawa has been appointed as the Managing Director of Adobe for South Asia.


b) He will replace Umang Bedi who served Adobe for five years.


c) He will lead Adobe's customer-facing engagements in India while Shanmugam Natarajan, Executive Director for Adobe India and VP Engineering, Digital Media, will continue to provide Site Leadership to Adobe India with a key focus on important research and development operations.


12. Swachh Yug campaign to make gram panchayats along Ganga open defecation free

a) The central ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation has recently launched the Swachh Yug Campaign in partnership with Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.

b) The campaign is aimed making villages open defecation free which are situated along the banks of Ganga river. The villages will be from five states namely Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

c) There are around 5,169 villages present on the banks of Ganga river. The campaign will have a local support from Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Bharat Scouts and Guides, Nehru Yuva Kendras and National Service Scheme.

d) A nodal officer will be appointed for each district to make his/hers district open defecation free. The government will also provide interpersonal behaviour change communication training to local trainers through a network of virtual classrooms.


13. Dia Mirza named Ambassador for Swachh Saathi programme

a) Bollywood actress Dia Mirza was recently appointed as the ambassador for Swachh Saathi (student internship) programme. It is a youth based programme under Swachh Bharat Mission.

b) Dia Mirza will interact school and college students across the country to spread awareness about cleanliness and cleaning activities.

c) Under this programme, more than 2,000 interns would enrolled to coordinate around 10,000 schools across India. All the students in these schools will pledge for clean India.


14. World's Space Companies come together against climate challenge

a) Space agencies of more than 60 countries came together under the impetus of Indian Space Research organization (ISRO) & French Space Agency (CNES). These agencies have decided to engage their satellites, to coordinate their methods and their data to monitor human-induced greenhouse gas emissions.

b) Without the support of satellites, it was impossible to recognise the issue of global warming and the subsequent historic agreement at UN headquarters which was signed on 22nd April, 2016.

c) 26 out of 50 essential climate variables which are being monitored at the present time can be measured only from space. i.e. rising sea level, sea ice extent, etc.

d) through the New Delhi declaration, these world space agencies have decided to establish an independent, international system to centralise data from their Earth-observing satellites.

1. Astrophysicists discover Canarias Einstein Ring in space

a) An international team of astrophysicists discovered a new optical Einstein ring called Canarias Einstein Ring (two perfectly aligned galaxy, namely source galaxy and lens galaxy). Einstein Ring is a distorted image of a galaxy, the source galaxy is 10,000 million light years away and lens galaxy is 6,000 million light years away from earth.


b) The research findings were published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society on 16 May 2016. The discovery was done by doctoral student Margherita Bettinelli from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and the University of La Laguna (ULL) of Spain.


c) The chance discovery was made when Bettinelli was examining data taken through the "Dark Energy Camera" (DECam) of the 4m Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Observatory in Chile.



2. Draft National Water Framework Bill, 2016 released

a) Central government has recently released the draft National Water Framework bill, 2016 to invite comments and suggestions from public.

b) The bill is aimed at establishing a national legal framework for protection, conservation, management and regulation of water in the country. Though the draft law is prepared by the Union Water resources ministry, 'Water' is a part of the State list of the constitution. So the act will be applicable only after getting approval from state legislature.

c) The bill strives for Right to water for life means a right of every citizen to have a sufficient quantity of safe water for life within his/her easy reach. The Bill recognises Water as a common heritage and resource which should be held in Public Trust.

d) The bill demands governments to work towards rejuvenation of river system with community participation


3. Rajiv Gauba Committee on Decongestion of Traffic in Delhi submitted report

a) An inter-ministerial committee on 'Decongestion of Traffic in Delhi' under the chairmanship of Rajiv Gauba has submitted its report to the union Ministry of Urban Development.

b) The committee has recommended a 4-pronged strategy with the components of

i) Improving Public Transport and Disincentivising use of private vehicles;

ii)Promoting Road Safety and efficient Traffic Management;

iii)Setting up Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority and enhancing institutional capacity; and

iv)Promotion of Transit Oriented Development through integrated land use and transportation planning.

c) The committee recommended moving people more efficiently than moving cars. The committee suggested to create infrastructure to promote walking and cycling in Delhi.

d) The committee has raised concerns over mushrooming of gated communities which are compelling a local traffic to come on main roads by preventing short cuts for movement of people. As per the recommendations of the committee, A Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority should be set up for better coordination, quick decision making and execution.



4. India becomes co-chair of Working Group on Maritime Situational Awareness under CGPCS

a) India was recently chosen to co-chair the working group on Improving Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA) in the Region through consensus. This decision was taken at Mahe, Seychelles during the 19th Plenary Session of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia (CGPCS).

b) The CGPCS was set up as a group of interested and affected nations, industry associations and multilateral agencies to take pro-active steps for checking piracy in the Indian Ocean region through a UN Security Council resolution.

c) It is dealing with the piracy off the coast of Somalia through Working Groups putting their efforts towards Capacity Building on legal, judicial framework and processes, and poverty alleviation in Somalia, Improving Maritime Situational Awareness in Indian Ocean Region and coordinating efforts for Disrupting Piracy Networks. Seychelles is the current Chairman of the CGPCS for the biennium 2016-17.



5. Scientists identified a process to remove DNA molecules from X-Files

a) As per the research findings in the Journal titled Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, scientists from University of Sheffield have decoded the process of removal of branched DNA molecules from the iconic double-helical structure.

b) In reality, far from being alien in origin, branched DNA are formed in the blood. These branches are essential intermediates formed during the process of copying our DNA. The discovery shows how Flap EndoNuclease (FENs) trim branched DNA molecules after the cells divided.

c) The scientists found the FEN threads the free end of the branch through a hole in the enzyme before sliding along to the trunk where it acts like a pair of molecular clippers, trimming the branch and restoring the iconic double-helix.

d) Understanding the working mechanism of FENs will help to engineer better and more reliable tests and tools for laboratory research and hospital diagnostics labs or pave the way for discovery of new drugs.


6. Himachal Pradesh becomes first state to launch green-concept based State Data Centre

a) Himachal Pradesh becomes the first state in the country to have a State Data Centre (SDC). Developed using green data centre concept, it will 101 people-oriented service online through an integrated data base.

b) With a view to promote online and paperless governance, the SDC would integrate the websites of various departments and all services could be accessible through the integrated data base, saving time and money spent on creation of infrastructure.

c) SDC would further help the departments to roll out more government-to-citizen-services and people can avail them from anywhere and anytime.



7. RBI has announced Second Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement

a) Reserve Bank of India has chosen to maintain the status quo on it's policy rate in it's second bi-monthly monetary policy review. So , the repo rate will be unchanged at 6.50%. RBI had reduced the repo rate from 6.75% to 6.50% during it's first bi-monthly monetary policy review in April, 2016.

b) RBI has also kept the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) and Statutory Liquidity Reserve (SLR) unchanged. This decision of wait and watch is till the assessment of performance of monsoon this year and it's affect on food prices.

c) The policy has kept the inflation target unchanged at 5% for January 2017 with upward bias. It pegged the growth forecast at 7.6% for the current fiscal. The policy recommended to keep a watch on impact of firming crude oil prices, implementation of 7th Pay Commission recommendations. To aid credit flow it stressed on timely capital infusion in PSU banks.


8. Rajasthan Government launches Mobile App RajVayu on Air Quality Index

a) A mobile application called RajVayu was recently launched by Rajasthan Government for sharing information about Air Quality Index of Jaipur, Udaipur & Jodhpur.

b) The information on this app will be based on the data collected by sophisticated air quality monitoring equipment and weather sensors. It will provide the details about the air quality and the level of pollutants like SOx, NOx, CO & Ozone in the air. It will also provide detailed information about temperature, wind speed, humidity, weather forecast and advisories.

c) This app is designed by Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board (RSPCB) jointly with Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). It is based on the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting Research (SAFAR-India) which is presently connected in Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.


9. Facebook Appoints Former Adobe Executive Umang Bedi As India MD

a)Social networking giant Facebook appointed Umang Bedi as Managing Director for its India operations.

b) Bedi will lead in building and maintaining strategic relationships with top clients and regional agencies in the country. His appointment will be effective from july, 2016.

c) He will be replacing Kirthiga Reddy who will return to United States to take on a new role at the company's headquarters.


10. Walmart tops the Fortune 500 list

a) Retail giant Walmart has topped the Fortune 500 list for the fourth time consecutively.

b) Fortune's annual list features 500 US companies based on their revenue.

c) Walmart is followed by oil and gas company Exxon Mobil and Apple, the top tech company on the list. While Amazon has been ranked 18th, Facebook has jumped 85 spots to be ranked 157th.


11. Serena tops Sharapova as world's top paid sportswoman

a) Forbes magazine has recently reported that Serena Williams has overtaken Maria Sharapova as the world's highest paid sportswoman.

b) Russian Tennis star Sharapova topped the list for the past 11 years. But this time, Williams topped the list by earning $28.9 million over the past 12 months.


12. World Oceans Day observed across the world

a) World Oceans day is observed globally on 8th June every year. The theme for 2016 celebration is Healthy Ocean, Healthy Planet.

b) The theme focuses on curbing plastic pollution since plastic degrades slowly polluting the waterways for a longer time thus negatively affecting the marine flora.

c) World Ocean day is celebrated with an aim to create an awareness regarding the importance of oceans and the impact of human activities on it.

13. Amber Gurung, composer of Nepali National Anthem, passes away

a) Nepal's national anthem composer and father of modern Nepali music Amber Gurung passed away at the age of 79.

b) Born in Darjeeling, Gurung composed more than 1000 songs in his career. He also authored three books of lyrics and memoirs - Samaalera Raakha (1969), Akcharkaa Awajharu (2003), and an anthology of essays and memoirs, Kahaa Gaye Ti Dinharu (2006).

c) He was felicitated with many awards like Kantipur FM Lifetime Achievement Award (2006), Jagadamba Shree, Kathmandu (1998), Hon. Colonel of Nepal Army for composing "Rato ra chandra Surya" (2011).




14. Chess Grandmaster Viktor Korchnoi dies

a) Chess Legend Korchnoi passed away at the age of 85.

b) Korchnoi played in three matches that produced the World Champion, but in each case lost to Anatoly Karpov. He was a four-time USSR champion and ranked number one in the world in 1965.

c) He was the oldest active chess grandmaster on the international tournament circuit for many years and won the World Senior Chess Championship in 2006.


15. India, ADB sign $120 mn loan pact for irrigation in Odisha

a) A $120 million agreement was recently signed between Indian government and the Asian Development bank (ADB) to improve irrigation and water management infrastructure in the state of Odisha.

b) The loan will be provided to the Orissa Integrated Irrigated Agriculture and Water Management Investment Program.It will be used for modernising seven irrigation subprojects resulting in improved irrigation in over 1,00,000 hectares and strengthening of Water User Associations (WUAs) and the institutional capacity of Odisha's Department of Water Resources.

c) The project aims to improve existing irrigation infrastructure, operation and maintenance and water use efficiency that will lead to higher agricultural productivity.


16. Shahid Rasool takes charge as Director of Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia as it's director.

b) He will further guide CEMCA in effective utilization of educational and media resources for distance education.

c) Previously, he was the director the Educational Multimedia Research Centre, University of Kashmir.

17.No detention for Illegal Migrants under 2008 Return Directive: EU Court

a) As per the recent ruling by the European Court of Justice, non-EU (European Union) migrants who illegally entered an EU member state should not face detention. Under the Europe's 2008 Return Directive, the migrants staying illegally should return back to their country of origin.

b) This ruling applicable to the migrants crossing borders within the Schengen passport-free zone and on leaving the zone.

c) Under the 2008 return Directive policy, the migrant is asked to voluntarily leave the Union within 30 days. After which, the removal should not involve excessive force or place the person's life in danger.

18.Union Government launched Surya Mitra Mobile App

a) A mobile app called Surya Mira was recently launched by Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal at National Workshop on Rooftop Solar Power in New Delhi.

b) The app will help customers by providing quality installation, repair, and Observations and Measurements (O&M) services. This app was developed by National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) which is an autonomous institution of Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE).

c) The app will be used for maintenance of off grid Solar PV system to keep it in good condition.It will also help Solar entrepreneurs to connect with custormers. It will prove useful in maintaining the existing solar water heater systems and Repair and maintenance of solar pumps.


19. Tintu Luka won silver at Josef Odlozil Memorial Athletics Meet in Prague

a) Indian Track 7 Field athlete Tintu Luka bagged a silver medal in 800 meters in the Josef Odlozil Memorial Athletics Meet in Prague, Czech Republic.

b) She covered the distance within 2:00:61. This is her season's first timing. 2013 World youth championship gold winner Anita Hinriksdottir of Iceland received the gold medal as she completed the distance in 2:00:54.


20. International Monetary Fund approved 1.5 billion US dollar loan to Sri Lanka

a) $1.5 billion US dollar loan to Sri Lanka was recently approved by International Monetary Fund (IMF). A 36 month extended arrangement was recently accepted the executive board of the IMF.

b) This funding is aimed at Meeting balance of payments needs arising from external environment and pressures, raising revenue through new taxes & financing the additional budget spending.
