1. Poverty ratio in the country has declined to 21.9% in 2011-12 from 37.2% in 2004-05 due to increase in per capita consumption, as per the Planning Commission report published today. The percentage of persons below poverty line in 2011-12 has been estimated at 25.7% in rural areas, 13.7% in urban areas and 21.9% for the country as a whole compared to 41.8%, 25.7% and 37.2% respectively in 2004-05.
2. Consumer confidence in India declined during the second quarter of this year due to continuous rupee depreciation and high inflation, as per a global consumer confidence index study by Nielsen. India's position dropped to third place as per global ranking after Indonesia and the Philippines.
3. With the rupee still continuing to be weak, the Reserve Bank of India has announced additional liquidity tightening measures today to contain excessive speculation and volatility in the foreign exchange market. RBI has reduced the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) for each bank from 1% of the total deposits to 0.5%, which will limit the access to borrowed funds from the central bank. RBI has also asked banks to maintain higher average CRR (cash reserve ratio) of 99% of the requirement on daily basis as against earlier 70% to suck out more liquidity from the system. The measures could suck out Rs 4,000—Rs 5,000 crore from the system.
4. After his group firm applied for a bank licence last month, Kumar Mangalam Birla said today that he has resigned from the Board of the central bank to avoid any conflict of interest. He was a nominated as a member of the Directors of the Central Board of the RBI in 2006.
5. Abdul Rahim Rather, the Finance Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has been appointed as the new Chairman of GST Panel by the Empowered Committee of States' Finance Ministers on GST. He replaced Sushil Kumar Modi who had resigned from the post after a split in the JD (U)-BJP Government in Bihar, in which he was the Deputy Chief Minister and the Finance Minister. The Standing Committee on Finance had finalised its views on the GST Bill last week and the report would be now tabled in the parliament during its Monsoon season.
