शंकालु प्रवृतिका एक सेठ नौकर तो ठीक, अपने परिजनों तक पर विश्वास नही करता था ! एक बार उसने अपनी विधवा भाभी की मदद करने के उद्देश्य से उसके पुत्र को अपने यहाँ नौकरी पर रख लिया ! सेठ अपने भतीजे के ईमानदारी व मेहनत के गुण से परिचित था, किंतु शंकालु स्वभाव के चलते उसने लडके की परीक्षा लेनी चाही ! एक दिन सेठ ने वहाँ कुछ पैसे रख दिये , जहाँ बैठकर लडका काम करता था ! लडके ने पैसे देखे तो तत्काल सेठ को वापिस कर दिये ! अगले दिन सेठ ने थोडे अधिक पैसे कमरे में रख दिये ! जब लडका आया तो वह समझ गया कि सेठ उसकी नीयत परखना चाहता है ! उसे अपने चाचा के अविश्वास पर दुःख हुआ,किंतु वह कुछ नही बोला और पूर्व की भांति सेठ को पैसे वापिस कर दिये ! इस बात को बमुश्किल एक सप्ताह ही बीता होगा कि एक दिन लडके को एक लाख रुपए की गड्डी कमरे के फर्श पर पडी मिली ! यह देख उसके धैर्य ने जवाब दे दिया ! वह अपना काम छोडकर नोट लेकर सेठ के पास पहुँचा और बोला “ चाचा ! यह लो आपके पैसे और आपकी नौकरी ! मैं इतने दिनों तक सहन करता रहा,किंतु आपके अविश्वास की कोई सीमा ही नही है ! याद रखिये कि निरंतर अविश्वास से विश्वास नही पाया जा सकता ! मेरे लिये आपके घर में काम करना अब सम्भव नही है !” लडका काम छोडकर चला गया और सेठ को जीवन का एक महत्वपूर्ण सबक दे गया ! सार यह कि विश्वास की परख के लिये गंभीर समझदारी से भरा एक अवसर काफी होता है , किंतु बार-बार उसे दोहराने पर स्वयम की विश्वसनीयता पर ही संकट खडा हो जाता है !
