Please explain as to how can we find different values of 'a' and 'r' that satisfy the below equation:

a(1 + r + r^2) = 57

Solution shows that the different values of a = 1, 12 etc.... How can these values be found without resorting to trial and error ?

For all the help I am showered with I will be very grateful. Thanks

 Given Question is: Suppose ∆ABC be a right-angled triangle where ∠A=90° and AD⊥BC. If Area (∆ABC) = 40 cm^2, Area (∆ACD)= 10 cm^2 and AC = 9 cm, then the length of BC is?

My question: Solve using two methods..1/2b*h=Area of ABC and using ratio of areas..why is BC coming different in both methods? or am i missing something? thanks.

P and Q started moving simultaneously from point X and Y respectively on a circular track in the same direction. XY = 2km. and length of the track is 6 km. The initial position of P was behind that of Q. P caught up with Q for the second time in 40 min. Had P started in opposite direction, they would have met for the first time in 12 min. Find the speed of P in km/hr.

Akhil, Bunty, Chameli, Disha and Eku worked on a project, which was divided into a few phases such that only one person worked on each phase. The ages of these 5 persons were 36 yrs, 18 yrs, 9 yrs, 72 yrs and 24 yrs respectively at the time of the project. The work done per phase by them was inversely proportional to their ages in years. Akhil worked on 4 phases of the project whereas Bunty worked on 5 phases. Eku and Disha worked on 8 phases each and the rest of the phases were worked upon by Chameli, who received the honour of having worked upon 40% of the project. How many phases of the project did Chameli work on?
