Reviews about Malay Ray Sir's GDPI classes in Delhi?
Guys, any official IIM Ahmedabad PGP group on Pagalguy? If yes, link please?
Male, General, Commerce grad Class 10: 89% Class 12: 89% Graduation: 72% CAT OA 97.7 VARC: 91 DLIR: 98 QA: 96 What IITs should I expect GDPIWAT calls from?
TL;DR : How reliable are the coaching when it comes to VARC? And Ramblings of a failure?
#This post is long but might help CAT 2019 aspirants. We read the journey of toppers and how they managed to score big but it might help knowing how not to prepare wrong. Toppers and teachers might add some valuable insight in the comments.#
VARC is always dicey; When CAT released its answer key, people had a expected score range varying from 10-15 marks which for an exam like CAT is a huge gap and CAT's VARC is on the easier side. XAT's VARC was so difficult that it would take a Shakespeare to answer 90% question correctly let alone all the questions correctly, moreover DM is also a section where the answers may differ significantly. It may also be noted that XAT rolls out its official answer key.
I bet the coaching institutes are scared and running with their tails between thier legs. Isn't this exposing that how these mighty coaching institutes are also fallible when it comes to VARC? Does this mean that one may be led down the wrong road conceptually when it comes to learning the trades of VARC.
I had first attempted CAT in 2015 just for the sake of it without any preparation and guess what I scored a 99.7 %ile in VARC. I had prepared adequately for CAT 2016 by taking some 20-30 mocks and guess what my VARC score fell down to 96.22 %ile. CAT 2017 had to be my best attempt, I was doing pretty well in mocks and in the end I had picked up a lot in QA and DILR ( my nemeses, ironically since I am from an IIT) also. Moreover I was acing the VARC section, I even got an AIR 4th in VARC was frequently in top 50s. I was mostly worried about screwing up in DILR but after CAT 17 I was certain that I had aced QA and DILR and done average in VARC. Guess what? I ended up with 84 %ile in VARC. I was devastated. I could have crossed 99%ile overall had I even performed averagely in VARC. What went so wrong? When I analysed my past performances I came to the conclusion that I was scoring in the range of 60-70 marks irrespective of the difficulty of the paper. There were certainly few exceptions but my percentile significantly depended on the performance of the other test takers. This clearly meant that I was not analysing my mocks as I should have. Now how do I come to this conclusion?
I attempted CAT this year after taking zero mocks, not having opened the books once, did not study anything for 6 months but ended up scoring 97.07 %ile ( VA 96.4, DILR 95.29, QA 93.27) in CAT (not a great score you say? I agree, but it helped me understand where I went wrong).
Let's start with QA : I simply covered 60-70% of the syllabus and was content with my preparation. This is the only section I believe which requires an experienced guidance. You cannot jump into this section merely by learning the concepts and formulas. There are ways to solve the same question in 10 minutes and within 60 seconds too. This requires a lot of practice. You need to make intricate notes, learn not only from your mistakes but keep notes of the best ways to solve a given problem. I did not do as much as I should have.
DILR was the one section I literally enjoyed preparing for. One should begin with some conventional problems in LR like einstein problem, Truth teller and lie teller etc. Once you get the flavor of solving these problems, this section is actually fun. In CAT one has to solve minimum of 4 caselets to see it through. This section is rewarding in the sense if you solve the problems the accuracy is generally above 90%. I was happy with my preparation.
VARC I believe is the section which I did not prepare at all or I mostly rode on luck. I was an avid reader throughout my school days therefore RCs came naturally to me. The only time I was preparing for VARC was while attempting mocks and in which I perfomed the cardinal sin of not making any learning out of it. I would suggest one should fininsh the Manhattan's RC, SC and CR for GMAT which is a great material to build up concepts rather than solving Arun sharma or Coaching material. The exercises are also good. I will differ from people who say you can't do miracles in RC in a year as you need to be a bibliophile and pretty well read. With "proper" practice one can score 95+ without a shred of doubt.
One can I ask why did not I prepare seriously? I will answer I did prepare seriously but my way of preparation was wrong. I got a promotion in the last three years of working which means I was dedicated in my job, I could have had made most out of free time at work for CAT, many of my colleagues did who are in A & C. I should have had made a separate copy for the mistakes I made in my mocks. I should have completed studying about each and every concept of Quant.
You may ask why am I rambling on my failures? Valid Question. I however don't see not scoring well in CAT as a failure but as an opportunity missed. I had the experience of attending selection procedures for few IIMs and managed to convert Shillong and newer IIMs too. I will definitely apply my learnings while preparing for GMAT.
P.S: I scored a 720 in GMAT with less than a month's prep in dec 28th. I have not filled any IIMs in my form through which I can expect a call.
Guys , anyone from erstwhile AP state board? I am from the first batch that got GPA based scores instead of marks. In the CAT form I just multiplied my GPA by 10 as there is no official conversion policy. The IIM A interview form asks me to provide a confirmation from the Board. Anyone who has any idea about this ?

Hello, Any suggestion on GDPI classes in Bangalore? Kindly help a brother out. First timer here.
Folks from Bangalore (only) :
How are we gonna prepare for GDPI? Any classes? Any group efforts amongst us? Any ideas?
Please comment and let's discuss the possibilities.
CAT - 99.97 , X-88, XII-88.4, B.Tech from an old IIT - 7.14. No call from IIMA. What is wrong with this system that it rates the past so much? Can't it understand that people change? Moreover they are penalising you for working hard and getting into a good college where instead some people do nothing and get into useless colleges which will never be allowed to operate in any developed country and gets a 9 gpa there which is not that tough against whom yours would be compared against (No hard feelings. But they won't even be able to clear a single semester with our papers.) Why is there an injustice being done for hard work?
Hello people, Can you please suggest some good coachings for GDPI in Bengaluru? Or any in Pune? You can name any good branch of TIME, IMS or CL in these cities. Thanks in advance.
