Something is so wrong. Beyond my mental capacity to solve. It is like a cat trying to understand the string theory.

I have calls from few top ranking colleges. Last year also I had calls from some of these colleges.

Last year I wanted to do an MBA to re-build my career because I had failed in UPSC twice. It wasn't easy to swtich from computers to humanities to aptitude. ย

CAT exam in itself isn't a cakewalk. One needs to have a solid motivation to score good in it. Isn't CAT score enough to prove that one is motivated to switch? Anyway.

All my friends who cared to read this and scrolled this far, I am thankful to you. Few days back I had my interview for SP jain. I have 95+ in school, 80+ in grad from a top ranking college, work ex of ~2 years in a Germany based MNC. The interviewer said to me, "If you had not resigned from your job to prepare for civils and come to us with this profile we would have gladly taken you". ย

I reminded him about their college mission statement which says "...Our students will recognise, understand, and uphold the social relevance of business decisions, including within the underserved sections of society.." I added that I have only grown as a person and my further knowledge of humanities combined with my academic and work ex credentials is only aligned with your mission statement and hence I don't consider it to be a hurdle in doing an MBA from your college.

He looked unaffected. I ain't shortlisted. What did he mean to say? He indirectly meant it would be difficult for recruiters to hire me beause of my career break. He meant to say that there are innumerable candidates who are better than me who will bring laurels to the college. ย

The point is that in reality a college is only a business which is not wrong per se. Except it is misleading when their vision, mission, WAT GD topic oozes with social conciousness and sustainable leadership blah blah etc.ย

This is just one of the anecdotes. After all my interviews I come out of the room with a puzzled look self doubting about my clarity of thought. In another top ranking college I was the last one to be interviewed, Being humans, they were naturally tired and exhausted by the time my turn came. In my MDI interview I said, among many other things, that I want to do a post graduation in management from your college because there are many managerial jobs in govt. agencies like NHAI, TRAI, PDS etc. that require a post grad in managment. They mocked me,laughed at me and asked me to leave. Interestingly, MDI offers management course programmes for the All India Services officers (IAS, IPS etc.) and boasts about it on their website. Sadly for me I failed to please their bloated egos.

All these MBA colleges boast about their alumni in authoring, filmmaking, civil services, singing, dancing, journalism, acting and what not. According to their media interactions, most, if not all, of these alumni did not know about their career goals until they achieved them. Every year they are felicitated as outstanding alumni by the respective colleges.

People, including me, who get selected are plain "lucky" because I can bet if I went for the same interview next year there is no gurantee that I would be selected with same or more amount of hard work.ย

So, what puzzles me is that most of these interviewers are not expert in interviewing and pinning my hopes on them is a risky affair. But what can I do about it? Probably nothing and just move with the flow. ย

However, If I could offer one feedback to the profs and these colleges, I would request them to try and shed their insecurities of all kinds. ย

Ironically, my wat topic in one of the PI was "if you could travel in time, would you travel to the past or future and why?" I think I know the answer now.

I dint apply to any of the mediocre colleges I was getting with my percentile in CAT. I am an IT engineer and will complete 3 years of experience in this July. I skipped applying to all the lower tier colleges and I am trying for ISB class of 2020. If not ISB, planning on not doing an MBA. Main reason of doing an MBA is to change my profile. Am I doing the right thing?

  • Yes, since brand matters
  • No, since you could always work hard even in a bad college

Are there washing machines/laundry services in bschools ya khud dhone hota hai? Haha. I know its funny but just a thought.

General question. Does anyone have an idea.what a relationship manager does in a bank. A couple of top 10 colleges alumni have this profile. My idea was relationship managers are the people sitting in the branches and clearing your queries, but that does not seem like a good profile from top 10 b-schools.

ย Does anyone know if Investment banking roles are provided at IIM shillong and which all firms do that?ย

Waking up too late for this... But what was the highest score in CAT 2017?

Could anyone share the refresher on mechanical engineering for the interviews?

Which option is best for a canditate with 3yrs work-ex (TCS)?
