  • I am excited and nervous. My life would change based on what will happen
  • I don’t know what you’re talking about.
  • Meh, I know what would happen and my life is set.

There has been a lot of spamming here about some Material for CAT being "sold" by some random people. I request you all to not fall for this and prevent others as well from falling for the same trap by helping them with the free material available.

I am resharing the link here:

Reiterating it again - do not fall prey to these "paid" material adds you see here.

The Ratticus Rattus Conundrum Most of the posts that I see here on PG are bashing RR for his fee structure. But not many know what you actually get for 10K(+Success fee). Today I’ll try shed some light on this part. Note that some of the details here are fudged to protect my privacy and of those who were in his group for PI guidance this season. As for credibility of this post, I will provide every proof our dear Groot asks for. I have no personal vendetta against RR or his guidance program but I believe insecure aspirants like me have a right to know what they are getting themselves into. So the story begins on 29th November 2019 when CAT score came out, I see one particular ID doling out profile advice left and right with a karma of 3000+. I was a novice to the field of WAT PI Preparation and looking at few of the past experiences online, I felt I didn’t stand a chance. So, I messaged the almighty RR for guidance. Now the guy explained his program and past achievements and then asked me to message him on WhatsApp. He sent me a 4 page document explaining all the term and conditions. I read the full document and signed an AGREEMENT on an A4 sheet which stated something like XYZ enters into an agreement with RR along with my details. Yes, I know what you all are thinking. How can this person be so stupid? I can definitely say that was a questionable move on my part but you have to remember I was desperate, underprepared and hopeless. Money was not that big of an issue. So started my journey with RR. The plan had 7 PIs- First 4 were baseline PIs. The objective of these was to assess our current level of preparation. The PIs were held after he gave a reading list consisting of 30 GK topics. 2 more such lists were provided later. Questions from these topics were directly asked in Baseline PIs even if it was completely irrelevant to your profile. The baseline PIs were basically an interaction between mentees and RR. He asked, you answered and then he told you the answer to the GK question. He stayed silent after most of the HR questions. The only feedback I received was related to not being good enough in GK. You could say the most ludicrous things in your HR questions (the kind of shit an actual panel would crucify you for saying) but he didn’t care. Some of the answers that I gave for my personals were so stupid, I only came to know after I told them to a mentor elsewhere. In 4 baseline PIs, I might have given 4 variants of Why MBA answer but I almost never got any feedback or grilling cross questions (Trust me it was not due to my answer being good). It almost felt like I was talking to a person with a script on the other side. The rest 3 PIs were call based institute specific PIs where he didn’t provide any feedback in between PI. Then came the marking part, I have talked to at least 2-3 other mentees since we had a common group. Everyone was awarded a random number between 16 and 20 out of 30. The feedback at the end was once again to focus on the reading list. Almost all mentees were asked similar questions irrespective of their profiles. The WAT evaluation part had 8 WATs (or 7). Here the marking scheme was once again similar. All mentees were given marks from 6 to 7 with 2-line feedback at most. I don’t know if that is good or bad but wherever I submitted WATs, this was the standard. A few topics were good but nothing out of the box. If you find one of those IMS GD PI book, that will probably have more topics from various areas. So, That was pretty much it for 10K that you spent. Yes you could schedule personal calls to him to talk about a specific issue that you were facing but once again the feedback was pretty generic and other mentors (online & otherwise) had better answers for my queries. All in all, I would recommend it probably 4/10 for the program. I doubt when he sits(IF he sits) in IIM C panel, they allow him to ask any questions. The program is expensive and you can get much value at TIME/IMS/Online PI programs. This is based on my experience and comparison with friends who enrolled in these institutes for WAT/PI preparation. Self explanatory

Can someone please solve set-1?

Since IIMs have already started their one year executive MBA in online mode, does anyone have any reviews about how effective are the classes?

Feeling Low and Confused.

I miss going out and meeting the people I love , Having the food i love, Doing basically whatever I love!.

Is anyone else feeling frustrated these days?

How are you coping up?

How are you focussing on your preperation with like zero social life to recharge you :(  ..?

I got only 81.21 percentile in CAT VARC 2019.  This time I would not like to settle for anything less than 99 percentile in the CAT VARC.

So guys,

Which, according to you, would be the best/sureshot approach to reach my desired target?

P.S.- PG VARC legends, please pour your precious strategies and aphorisms in the comments below

Please I need your genuine help guys!!!

  • Other Strategy (Please Specify the same in comments below)
  • ONLY Practising (not reading) 34 VARC Questions (1 VARC Previous year mock/sectional) daily from Previous Year Mocks and real CATs.
  • Don’t Know/Poll Check/VARC Struggler
  • ONLY Reading (not practising any questions) novels/long and diverse articles daily from Tetw,Aeon,Aldaily,New Yorker,Longreads etc. for 3-4 hours.

Hey folks,

Thanks for the spirited response to the PG DT 20 application. We have decided to build the DT in a 10-10-10. 10 added on basis of past CAT performance alone, that is by CAT 2019 score. Another 10 will be added around 30th June based on the mock performances between then and now. The final 10 will be added by end July or early August, again on the basis of their mock performances.

This first lot of 10 people is top notch. Leaving out people who were past DT members, the highest percentile among the 10 is 99.83 and the lowest is 99.56. That is an absolutely top class batch of people. There were people starting from 99.43 who happened to have missed out by a whisker on this first list. We decided on the structure because it is essential to keep open the opportunities for consistent performers in mocks and the DT spirit is not built on past laurels but on the regular battle that you take on in the mocks.

Those who have missed out need not worry about much. I and about 50% of last year's DT would have missed out. This year's 100%iler, @ashwinhariwould have missed out in this first cut of the DT 19 team if it were done by CAT 18 percentile. Therefore we have decided to keep the tiered structure so that we do not miss out on the next Ashwin by taking all the people we want to at once. 2/3 of this year's DT will be based on mock scores, so if that is an added motivation for you, use it well. We are watching and those whose spirit, scores and consistency stand out, will be taken in for the next round of additions.

Without further ado, here is the DT '20 First Class:

RC Practice - 18th May | CAT 2019 Slot 1 Passage 3 (Emperor Penguins)

Scientists recently discovered that Emperor Penguins—one of Antarctica’s most celebrated species—employ a particularly unusual technique for surviving the daily chill. As detailed in an article published today in the journal Biology Letters, the birds minimize heat loss by keeping the outer surface of their plumage below the temperature of the surrounding air. At the same time, the penguins’ thick plumage insulates their body and keeps it toasty. . . .

The researchers analyzed thermographic images . . . taken over roughly a month during June 2008. During that period, the average air temperature was 0.32 degrees Fahrenheit. At the same time, the majority of the plumage covering the penguins’ bodies was even colder: the surface of their warmest body part, their feet, was an average 1.76 degrees Fahrenheit, but the plumage on their heads, chests and backs were -1.84, -7.24 and -9.76 degrees Fahrenheit respectively. Overall, nearly the entire outer surface of the penguins’ bodies was below freezing at all times, except for their eyes and beaks. The scientists also used a computer simulation to determine how much heat was lost or gained from each part of the body—and discovered that by keeping their outer surface below air temperature, the birds might paradoxically be able to draw very slight amounts of heat from the air around them. The key to their trick is the difference between two different types of heat transfer: radiation and convection.

The penguins do lose internal body heat to the surrounding air through thermal radiation, just as our bodies do on a cold day. Because their bodies (but not surface plumage) are warmer than the surrounding air, heat gradually radiates outward over time, moving from a warmer material to a colder one. To maintain body temperature while losing heat, penguins, like all warm-blooded animals, rely on the metabolism of food. The penguins, though, have an additional strategy. Since their outer plumage is even colder than the air, the simulation showed that they might gain back a little of this heat through thermal convection—the transfer of heat via the movement of a fluid (in this case, the air). As the cold Antarctic air cycles around their bodies, slightly warmer air comes into contact with the plumage and donates minute amounts of heat back to the penguins, then cycles away at a slightly colder temperature.

Most of this heat, the researchers note, probably doesn’t make it all the way through the plumage and back to the penguins’ bodies, but it could make a slight difference. At the very least, the method by which a penguin’s plumage wicks heat from the bitterly cold air that surrounds it helps to cancel out some of the heat that’s radiating from its interior. And given the Emperors’ unusually demanding breeding cycle, every bit of warmth counts. . . . Since [penguins trek as far as 75 miles to the coast to breed and male penguins] don’t eat anything during [the incubation period of 64 days], conserving calories by giving up as little heat as possible is absolutely crucial.

Q.11 Which of the following best explains the purpose of the word “paradoxically” as used by the author?

Ans

1. Heat gain through radiation happens despite the heat loss through convection.

2. Keeping a part of their body colder helps penguins keep their bodies warmer.

3. Keeping their body colder helps penguins keep their plumage warmer.

4. Heat loss through radiation happens despite the heat gain through convection.

Q.12 Which of the following can be responsible for Emperor Penguins losing body heat?

Ans

1. Plumage.

2. Food metabolism.

3. Reproduction process.

4. Thermal convection

Q.13 In the last sentence of paragraph 3, “slightly warmer air” and “at a slightly colder temperature” refer to ______ AND ______ respectively:

Ans

1. the cold Antarctic air which becomes warmer because of the heat radiated out from

penguins’ bodies AND the fall in temperature of the surrounding air after thermal convection.

2. the air inside penguins’ bodies kept warm because of metabolism of food AND the

fall in temperature of the body air after it transfers some heat to the plumage.

3. the air trapped in the plumage which is warmer than the Antarctic air AND the fall in temperature of the trapped plumage air after it radiates out some heat.

4. the cold Antarctic air whose temperature is higher than that of the plumage AND the fall in temperature of the Antarctic air after it has transmitted some heat to the plumage.

Q.14 All of the following, if true, would negate the findings of the study reported in the passage EXCEPT:

Ans

1. the temperature of the plumage on the penguins’ heads, chests and backs were

found to be 1.84, 7.24 and 9.76 degrees Fahrenheit respectively.

2. the average temperature of the feet of penguins in the month of June 2008 were

found to be 2.76 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. the average air temperature recorded during the month of June 2008 in the area of

study were –10 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. the penguins’ plumage were made of a material that did not allow any heat transfer

through convection or radiation.
