We all know about WFH internships, but is there anything like WFH live projects? Just curious.

IIM K waalo thoda result dedo........

IMT ghaziabad vs Ximb Bm Hi All, Can you please suggest which option to choose as I am interested in finance and have work experience of 2 years in IT. My other preference is going for technology consulting roles if not shortlisted for finance profiles in the college. As ximb offers more consulting roles, but will bhubaneswar will be a location disadvantage? Please help and provide your reasons, which one to choose from the above.

Apologies already for a really long post but I see that there is a lot of disappointment in the air following a couple of results and the process of some colleges not going your way. I have myself been through a similar situation and hence, a year on, this is just an attempt to try and paint a picture of the other side.

“Nothing you say can make us feel any better”

Ahh well, you are right. I know it sucks. And it will continue to suck. The pain doesn’t go away. It hasn’t for me at least. And I don’t expect that to change ever. The disappointment will stay for the entire life. But I still say, that after joining a college, things aren’t really that bad.

“Oh, come on! How can they not be?”

Because you learn to make peace with your situation. And it is really important to do so to survive. Don’t be too harsh on yourselves. You did a good job to make the best out of your situation and be where you are. There are other factors at play, which aren’t in your control, and you need to be okay with that.

“Yes, the system is really unjust and unfair to the GEMS”

I am not going to make a comment on that. But having looked at things from the other side of it, you need a diverse classroom to ensure an enriching learning experience. No two doubts about that.

Not trying to defend the current system in place, but b-schools have the data of their past batches and based on that analysis they try to adjust their criteria each year. Yes, the sample size in itself is biased but what can they do. They find that people with better past academics give them better odds, and that’s what they try to get. BETTER ODDS. That’s it. It doesn’t really define you.

“You may be right but this is still really unfair to us. It is like playing a game of poker”

Yes, it absolutely is. Things are pretty random. Even after you enter a b-school, you’ll see this at play. Embrace the randomness. Do what you need to, give things your best shot and move on. Efforts do not necessarily bring equivalent results. Accept that. Shove away the expectations but still don’t lose hope. Tougher than it sounds, yeah.

You see, “thechaoticbutterfly” was chosen on the basis of the butterfly effect. It was a symbolism of hope. Things aren’t over yet. Whether you have any fight left in you or not, you will have to still stand up and fight every day. And if you lose hope, it is going to be really tough.

“If all this wasn’t enough, we now have this Covid situation to screw us”

If it of any consolation, you aren’t alone. Even we are in the same boat. The fact that I am writing this on a Monday afternoon, should be testament enough of how well our internships are going. And post this we are looking at a possibility of: an entire term being shifted to an online mode, exchange being cancelled, a lower PPO Ratio and a really f***ed up placement season. So, do I lose hope? Can I afford to throw the towel in and give up on fighting it out?

“You’re talking about a good picture. What is good about non-ABC colleges?”

I would say almost everything except the brand. A similar rigorous academic environment, better than you imagine placements, ample of opportunities and a good & diverse peer group. As a non-comparative mode of analysis, it has helped me grow a lot as an individual, gather some skills & knowledge on the way, have a solid network, some amazing friends and an experience to remember and cherish. Yes, it wasn’t exactly a smooth road and at a lot didn’t go as per my expectations. But as I said, expectations are what hurt.

So, remember to keep an open mind when you go in anywhere. A year on, I am still smiling and surely have some fight left in me. I hope you do too. Yes, it is okay to grieve right now. But do not hold on to that grief. It will only cause more pain. Move on and have a good life. Cheers!

PS: A small piece from the best advice I got last year and something I carry with me to this day:

“If we zoom out, like really really zoom out, there is a mighty big universe out there and our existence won't really matter on its infinite timeline. But, from our perspective, these alphabets associated along with our names are huge.

Remember, there is a guy out there who wants to go to mars. If your only aim in life is to just enter those buildings made up of bricks/stones/concrete/steel, I suggest you to take some time off and rethink about your existence.

You are better than that. Everyone is better than that. Everyone has always been better than that.”

 RC Practice - 11th May

A new controversial theory challenges the long-held view of most archaeologists that primitive European societies were patriarchal in both their social and religious structures, by suggesting that the people of ―Old Europe— from 8000 B.C. to 3000 B.C.—lived in stable agricultural societies in which women headed clans and men laboured as hunters and builders. This theory suggests that during the Stone Age there thrived in and around Europe peace-loving, matriarchal communities in which men and women lived together as equals, respected nature, and worshipped a nurturing deity called the Great Goddess.

Proponents of this theory contend that this peaceful and harmonious society was shattered in about the year 3000 B.C., when marauders from the Indo-European steppes replaced social and sexual egalitarianism by patriarchy and hierarchy, and warrior gods dethroned the Great Goddess. With the widespread decimation of Old Europe, the goddess-centred religion went underground. However, its symbols have reappeared over the centuries in the forms of the female deities of Greece and Rome, in the Virgin Mary, and in the belief in spiritual forces lurking within the natural world.

The theory of the Great Goddess has been hailed by feminist social critics, artists, and religious thinkers for providing an important alternative to traditional, patriarchal mythologies and paradigms, as well as for providing a new and more positive model for the human relationship to the natural world.

Yet many other investigators into prehistoric Europe consider the theory an unsubstantiated and idealistic version of history. To a number of critics, the chief problem in this radical theory is one of method. Traditional archaeologists, taking issue with unorthodox speculation on ancient belief systems, contend that archaeological evidence may tell us something about what people ate in the small villages of prehistoric Europe, how they built their homes, and what they traded, but cannot tell us much about what the dwellers of the ancient world actually thought. To them, such speculation is illegitimate.

But supporters of the theory of a goddess-worshipping Old Europe counter that such critiques reveal a certain narrow-mindedness on the part of scientists rather than weaknesses on the part of their theory arguing that some degree of speculation is important, perhaps even necessary, for the sake of progress in archaeology and other fields. This element of speculation helps reveal the implications of a theory.

1. Which of the following most closely resembles the new theory’s view of the European society prior 3000 B.C?

A. A nomadic community of hunter-gatherer-builders in which women held positions of importance in clan, as men provided for the family.

B. A female-dominated society with men’s main role limited to labor

C. A warring community where groups were divided into two – one worshipping the male war gods and the other worshipping a kind feminine deity.

D. A pacific community of nature worshippers with well-classified roles for both sexes.

2. Based on the information in the passage, which of the following statements about prehistoric European society would traditional archaeologists most likely consider illegitimate?
A. The people were agrarian and not nomadic.
B.  Food was cooked in clay vessels over a fire.
C. The people were worried about invasion.
D. They had adopted a more patriarchal model

3. Which of the following maxims seems most in agreement with the argument that the supporters of the Great Goddess theory put forth in response to criticism?
A. Those who live by the sword will die by the sword.
B. A mind is like a parachute in that it only works when open.
C. He who does not understand his opponent‘s arguments does not understand his own.
D. The early bird gets the worm

4. Which of the following would be contrary to what a proponent of the theory of the Great Goddess most likely believes?

A. The available archaeological evidence does not rule out the idea that Old European matriarchal communities existed.

B. The field of archaeology has been dominated in the past by male- oriented scholarship.

C. Matriarchy is conducive to establishing a healthy relationship with the natural world.

D. The decimation of Old European society wiped away all traces of the Great Goddess religion.

Can anyone please suggest some Good Books to read? I've always only read fiction and now want to read something which helps me grow my knowledge. Any kind of book will do. TIA

One genuine question

When people get selected for top notch colleges like IIM A B C or of that league, and some other person makes it to a decent college like IMT, NM etc

Does it mean that person from NM type college can never make it big in career as compared to one from IIM ABC? The level if IIM ABC can never be matched ever if we go to some other college? Are there any cases who prove this wrong?

Tell me one thing, what's the point of writing an SOP for Vizag, and answering all those questions in IIT Kanpur, IITs form, if they are going to select on basis of just Composite Scores? This is something ,I don't understand.

Covid-19 is not only leading to unprecedented loss of human lives, it is leading to a huge economic cost too. Governments are borrowing extraordinary amount of money to make up for the lost revenue and to provide support to individuals and corporate. As per an IMF report, the recourse would lead to sharp increase in government debt to GDP ratio. A look at some of the figures.
