Hi everyone.
I am Aayush Mittal, currently studying at IIM Kashipur. If you are someone who is looking to enter into an IIM this year or next, I just want to take few minutes of your time and help you in making the right decision when the right time comes. My post is nowhere related to any college in either positive or negative way but just what is needed to be heard and understood.
1. Which IIM to join - Do you really think the current students would tell you not to join their college even if you've got slightly better options? Mostly not, unless your options are really great which could not be ignored or that someone dislikes his/her college or is really honest to guide you. My basic advise to you would be very simple - do your own research. Ask the Adcom of every college about their own college. Ask everything - faculty, placements, infrastructure, learning environment, everything that comes to your mind. Write everything down and ask yourself few questions -
1. What do 'you' want?
2. Which college (among all the options that you have) is offering you that in the best possible way?
3. If somehow you lose interest in what you thought you wanted to specialize into (because many do), what might be your second option?
4. Which college is offering you that in the best possible way?
5. How has the college developed itself in past few years? That might give you an idea of how it is going to be when your final placement time comes.
2. 100% Placement - A lot of students look for this thing. Yes, it is important. But why do you judge an entire college if 10-20 students did not get placement from the same? With such a skill set that you have developed over past 20+ years, why do you fear that if that fact is true, it's you who would be left unplaced? 100% Placement depends on many factors - The changes in the business world such as retention rate of current employees in a company or an industry, switching of industry itself by the employees, financial strength of market, how placement committee is performing and most importantly, what have you learnt at IIM so far. As I can recall one of the dialogues of an auto wala from Episode 1 of Kota Factory "Bhaiya jiska idhar bhi aake nhi hua na. Uska samjho hona hi nhi tha", the situation is no different. You need to study at IIM too, solve case studies and develop corporate skills in order to get placed. Please understand that. Don't fear that you will be left unplaced. Believe in yourself, remember all the great things you did in past 20 years, all the things that you learned in the college so far and you will surely get a good job no matter which IIM you enter.
3. Placement Report - The only thing that you should look for are the companies and roles offered. You are an IIM student. Given that you study and perform well, you will get a good package, if not on-campus then off campus. Don't go too much for average, highest, median etc. These things will vary depending on the number of students in your batch, current business scenario, very high package offered to just 3-4 students etc. For example, if two colleges tell you that their medians are 10 LPA each with batch size 150 and 200 respectively and you join either of them, make sure you target and prepare yourself to be in the first 75 and 100 respectively. Also, let's suppose that 9 out of 10 students got placed at 10 LPA but the 10th one got placed at 30 LPA. The average would now be 12 LPA and you might think that since the average is 12 and if you work really hard, your package will be somewhere around 15-18. Unfortunately, the real story is totally different. Placement reports will always vary but your skills, learning and confidence won't and shouldn't.
4. Polls & Trolls on Pagalguy or Facebook - You are smart enough to understand what's real and what's not. College students would vote for their college, students with a high WL number would vote for other colleges so that students opt for them and they get what they wanted. Hear every word, but do your research post that. Everything that you read might be true, but not necessarily.
Having said all that, I really wish you all the luck with whatever decision you take. Go where your heart and mind says, and not where you are converted to by someone's convincing skills. Believe in yourself more than anything else. Good luck!
Confused af. All converted
