CAT 2017 Verbal Ability Preparation - PaGaLGuY

Why do we tend to confuse improbability with impossibility? Partly it’s because evolution did not favour complex probabilistic thinking. Honed by centuries of hunter-gathering, we are disposed to make snap decisions on the basis of minimal evidence and facile theories - presumably because those who glimpsed a lion and started running, on the crude assumption that all wild animals always eat humans, were more likely to survive than those who preferred to test this hypothesis experimentally.

1.But some find this view flawed, as it is said that evolution does not think or plan ahead.
2.After all, evolution doesn’t care if you are right or wrong – only if you survive.
3. After all, in evolutionary terms, friendly lions are not impossible, but they are certainly improbable.
4 .As they must have thought: there may be such things as friendly lions, but better be safe than sorry.

Unseen University had had many different kinds of Archchancellor over the years. Big ones, small ones, cunning ones, slightly insane ones, extremely insane ones - they'd come, they'd served, in some cases not long enough for anyone to be able to complete the official painting to be hung in the Great Hall, and they'd died. The Archchancellor, as the senior wizard in a world of magic, had the same prospects of long-term employment as a pogo stick tester in a minefield.

1]  Archchancellors at Unseen University did not last very long as it was a very dangerous job.

2]  The Archchancellors of Unseen University had a high mortality rate.

3]  Unseen University had had various types of Archchancellors but few of them had lasted long, as it was not a job with long-term employment prospects.

4]  Though Unseen University had had many different types of Archchancellors over the years, the one thing they all had in common was that they didn't last long.

 Summary:

Among educated Gujarati families, it has generally been a matter of pride to educate children in the Gujarati medium. So, it surprised me when my mother said that since I had grown up in the modern era, she would have no option but to send me to an English-medium school. Many Gujarati-medium schools in Mumbai are converting to English medium. In an increasingly computer-literate world where English has become the lingua franca, parents face a difficult choice between maintaining cultural identity and investing in their children’s future. This set me pondering over the nature of linguistic division in India. While the fear of fragmentation along linguistic boundaries was greatest in the wake of independence, somehow, we have managed to weave a nation out of multi-linguistic society. How will we face this new threat of linguistic fragmentation between urban and rural India and the central heartlands and surrounding states? Although public policy remains justly concerned with increasing income disparities across states, the cleavages along linguistic lines – command over English and computing languages seem to have been overlooked. Given the increasing importance of these skills in a globalising economy, we may well be sowing the seeds of long term regional discord by ignoring these disparities

.a)Increasing importance of computer languages is resulting in many Gujarati- medium schools being converted to English medium. The increasing importance of these skills is leading to long term regional disparities.

b)It has been a matter of pride for the Gujarati families to educate their children in Gujarati medium. But, in an increasingly computer literate world it is becoming very difficult for parents to invest in their children’s future. This is leading to disparities along linguistic lines which might lead to more serious problems. How will we face these challenges?

c)Increasing importance of computer languages and command over English are leading to linguistic fragmentation between urban and rural India. Increasing income disparities have always been a matter of concern but how are we going to face this new threat along linguistic lines, which might have far more dangerous repercussions, if overlooked?

d)With an increase in computer literates and with English being used as a common language, India is facing a threat of linguistic fragmentation between urban and rural India. Increasing income disparities have always been a matter of concern but linguistic differences have been ignored. This could lead to regional discord in the long term

No ethical evaluation of zoos can avoid the question of animal procurement. Should humans continue to take animals from the wild? In addressing this question, we must consider the associated harms. Today many zoos portray themselves as promoting the survival of endangered species. Indeed, some zoo-advocates identify species preservation as the major goal of zoos -although only a small portion of the zoo budget is devoted to this endeavour. ____________________________________

a)Zoos have, in fact, made serious efforts to protect only a small number of species.

b)In zoos, breeding with a small number of individuals often leads to inbreeding, producing young animals with increased vulnerability to disease and environmental stresses.

c)One advantage of this goal is that nearly everyone endorses it.

d)Humans should stop capturing wild animals for zoo exhibits.
