Hi i am raghav and i am planning to go for Masters in Finance from Usa in 2013 mainly because i dont have work experience.i have done Bachelors in Computer Applications.will being from a non finance background be a disadvantage in my selection?also i am planning to do a distance learning financial management course from Amity University.will it be advantageous to me when applying?if i work during this course from amity then will that work be considered as full time as my course is distance education?
Dear Sir/Madame
I have a query regarding Phd MBA from top 10 universities in US. I would like to know the prospects and kind of roles available to a student who does a Phd from the top 10 institutes in US. Also, how is the admission process different from the normal MBA process.

@Parul1987 said:Thanks a lot for this info And I assume MS in finance would'nt be technical so I was in doubt if choosing MS in Finance over MBA would be safe if job prospects r taken into account. I was inclined towards choosing MS in Finance because of two reasons -1) MBA is much more expensive( although it definitely pays back later but making a huge investment is also tough)2) I was a little skeptical about my job experience( but this doubt has been clarified as you said 3 yrs of exp is not less)Is MS in Finance good too??Thanks once again as I have been posting to other forums as well but have not heard back yet. I was actually happy to see somebody replying so fast.
Whenever it comes to a Foreign B school. First thing you should be concerned is - MONEY !
There are several scholarship programs run by serveral institutes that could help you.
About the confusion between MS and MBA.. it depends on your requirement what you want to do, lets understand both..
start with the business MS degree : -
an MS will dig deeply into a subject. Expect rigorous material that may be more theoretical or math-based than a more general curriculum. Marketing is a good example. At a high-level, the subject may seem straightforward: figuring out how to sell a product or service; just another word for advertising. Pull back the curtain, though, and you will find an incredibly intricate discipline that employs aspects of mathematics, sociology, statistics, product design, distribution, and more. If you are really sure of your subject, then an MS will give you the chance to explore it with great depth.
Also, because it's a more specialized degree than an MBA, business MS programs may be smaller and may offer less flexibility in course options and schedules.
A closer look at the MBA degree : -
An MBA is a universally recognized degree, so you can expect it will always be a highlight on your resume, no matter who's looking at it. As we alluded earlier, an MBA has breadth: you can expect coursework in subjects as diverse as finance, organizational behavior, leadership, technology, and management.
If you're looking for career flexibility or management training, a business degree is the way to go. Through varied classes, case studies, and a diverse student body, you will be exposed to a whole gamut of subjects and industry opportunities. You might even begin your degree with one career in mind, and finish the semester with an entire list of other options.

This depends on which field do you want to work in. Most PhD students get into scholarly pursuits. If you want to teach at one of the top US universities, then a PhD will be the route to that path.
You can also get back to the job market, but my guess is not all industries have jobs for people with PhDs. You can land a research related role in your industry.
However it seems to me that you are not very sure about doing a PhD in the first place. It will be interesting to know your reasons, so do write them in.

1. list down your interests in other functions, say marketing, accounting, finance, any
other.
2. What led to that interest, for instance, interactions with cross functional teams?
3. Connect that to spacific activities that you were involved in.
4. Which of your related skills helped you perform well in those tasks?
Do you see any emerging patterns? This exercise can lead you to understand what you are interested in and if you are good at that, with whatever exposure you have had.
The specialization will come much later.

Your b-school selection can depend a lot on the final GMAT scores.
It also depends on what you would want to do after the MBA. You have not mentioned that here.

Travelling may be part of your job in a marketing position, specially if you are managing a regional/ national team. Anyways marketing as a function is very vast- there are tons of roles which a person can fit in: you can become a product manager/ brand manager, get into social media, advertising or PR, direct marketing, marketing research - you name it.
While you may be doing a lot of ground activities at the entry level, you would also get involved with the strategy and P&L; as you progress.
I suggest that before you think about speacializations, get clarity over what you want to do.

Go for an Indian MBA or have a crack at the those top schools abroad??cause after I heard the tough news from you it is scary!..Sameer I am just out of college,I am really interested in my dad's bizz but he says "jao jaakar duniya daari seekho", dont be under this pinchra(nest),even I agree with him,I wanna VALUE ADD to his business, and that will come I believe if I do an MBA+work atleast for 3 years in a big organisation,so if I come back then I may be well equipped to value add to him rather me just being a under grad and joining his business and listening to orders!...correct me if I am wrong and advice me the way to go! ....again the key thing is if you were me what would you pick Indian MBA or abroad? Regards -Mehran
For any MBA program, the best way to extract the most is to be in a position to blend theory and practice. Right now, you don't have the latter, so the former won't help.
You'd realise that non of the bschool case studies (mostly focussing on videsi companies) will really teach you how to run a business in a country like India
Your dad would be a far tougher boss than any other manager you'd work under. Why? Because it's his money and reputation at stake. And when he's recommending you to learn duniya daari, the best way to learn that is in the real duniya rather than the academic duniya.
Sounds logical?
