@mba-help said: @dushyantcfa Hi Dushyant, This response has been written by Sachin (co-founder of MBA Decoder), an LBS alum: If you are very sure that finance sector is your area of interest and career pursuit, then go for it. All companies recruiting in finance/ financial services coming to campus invite applications from both MBA and MiF programs. However, if you do an MBA, you get an internship opportunity which many people use to make a transition to another industry/area. For instance people working into industry wanting to move into consulting would typically do an internship with a consulting company. This gives them a first hand experience of what it is really about and also improves there chances of getting an offer either from the same firm or another... as they are able to better demonstrate a fit.In your case, you already seem to be working in corporate finance, so a transition into financial services should not be that difficult in my opinion unless you want to do something drastically different in terms of a role. That would be my take.Post qualification growth prospects will be largely performance driven. Employers, business community and larger alumni community does not differentiate between various programs of LBS. An LBS alum is an LBS alum. Namitawww.mbadecoder.com
Thanks Sachin and Namita for such an structured and insightful reply.
I'll be soon in touch with you.

Rocky bhai, you've chosen the wrong thread to post your query.

This thread is for international MBA programs that accept the GMAT.

At SP Jain, the average work experience is 3 years, but the range of experience may show some students in the same category as you. So if you think that SP Jain's course will give you more traction with recruiters as it is a better known course, and the benefits to your future career will be more, then join that.
That you are finally willing to get back to school with so many years at work shows the importance of the MBA for you- don't let the cost be a hindrance to your decision.
For other institutes like ISB and the IIMs, your GMAT scores are very low and they will put you at an immediate disadvantage.

I have my GMAT Scheduled in september.

Adcool, its like asking how many marks should I get in my 12th grade exams- the answer always is "your best"!

Check out the websites of these two schools and read through their admissions pages. Ideally it pays to have scores which are above the average GMAT scores of the current class or within the 30-50% range of GMAT scores of the class.

It doesn't matter unless your grades suffered. If they did, hope you have made them up in the next semesters.

Thnx Namita.......But can u pls throw some light on how my profile is as per the Shortlisting criteria?

@adcool.77 said:@mba-help Thnx Namita.......But can u pls throw some light on how my profile is as per the Shortlisting criteria?

there is no such shortlisting criteria that any b-school adheres to- they look for similar qualities like career progression, leadership experience (at work or outside), clarity over career goals and demonstration that you will contribute in some ways to the b-school.

If you can show all this through the essays, data sheets, resume, recos and interview (if you get invited), then your chance is as good as any one else's. You have talked about a lot of certificates in this post, but there is no mention of any managerial responsibilities, therefore its hard for me to give any specific views.

Talking about the Managerial qualities:
1. I am taking care of CMMI Implementation for the whole function(SPOC)
2. I also supporting other teams in implementation of CMMI from basic level
3. I am involved in auditing of various teams for CMMI.
4. I have run two six sigma projects which have a huge notional savings benefit across the organization
5. I am also the SPOC for a Process area with Onshore with end to end responsibility

Hi Sir,

I Scheduled an appointment for giving GMAT on November 6, keeping in mind the last date for application for ISB cycle 2 i.e 30th November. Now after registering I got an email confirmation that mentioned, they would be taking atleast 20 days to give me the score. Now if I take exactly 20 days then it will come down to 26th november and last date is 30th November.
Should I reschedule the test now to an earlier date looking at the risk of missing the deadline?

Thanks
Saurabh

thanks Namita!

You posted this thrice!

With the information you've shared, it's difficult for anyone (even those with a, umm, crystal ball to gaze into) to let you know whether you can or cannot get into a top 15.

But the bigger disconnect I see here is that you are approaching the whole process incorrectly. You are putting CAT and GMAT at the center of the decision process, and are feeling the pressure to choose between the two.

Instead, start with the end result in mind. And then work backwards to see how you can get there. Get the basic questions sorted out.

- What do you want to do in 3-5-7 years?
- Why do you feel the need for an MBA?
- Why do you think this is the right time?

Don't end up with a degree prematurely. That won't take your career aspirations anywhere.

If you have been doing well with your startup, maybe you should continue working on it for a while more. If you really feel the need for an MBA, you could it any time you want in the next 10 years (your choice of 2 yr vs 1 yr will differ, though).

@[81205:MartianOnEarth]:Thx Sameer for your promt reply...thats kind of you!.Thats right Im not doing too well now with the start up..hence I would like to earn some money VIA MBA by completing it in a good institute and eventually plunge into the start up again hopefully say after at least 2 years of post MBA work exp !..so this is my future plan..

hence a college with very good placements is very important for me..
Hence my comparison was with the placements of Indian B schools and B schools abroad and I found that B schools abroad have a relatively higher pay (correct me if I am wrong)..hence I thought why not try and get into these top 10 B schools in the world? to have a crack at those Big placements!...but on further research I was surprised on the following,
1.Fee structure of these top schools(Havard,Stanford,Wharton etc...) is about 100,000$ or even more which close to a crore rupees :-p!...Do they they really have good ROI Sameer????....Is it worth the risk??considering one is applying for loan on this heavy amount of money!...perhaps only you can answer this..
2.I also heard. Even in the best of B schools abroad there is no GUARANTEE on placements as one has to search for jobs after the course(correct me if I am wrong),as when compared to a top Indian B school like an IIM where every Tom **** Harry in the class gets well placed via campus recruitment ..
If points 1,2 have a positive feedback from you then I will seriously give it a shot at these schools else I would rather go for the ones here in India..
Thank you Sameer

Hello

I am a newbie, registered a while ago but only recently have I started lurking around here.

Anyway, I have recenly finished my B Tech from IIT Madras. But I have a really poor GPA (2.0 on USA scale) and haven't got placed in campus recruitments either.
I have a strong urge to do a course in MBA outside India. But I'm not really sure if it would really be a worthwhile experience because of my low GPA and lack of any meaningful work experience.
I haven't even got any clue as to which kind of universities I should be applying.

I have just started preparing for GMAT. I hope I get a decent score, when I finally give an attempt, so as to make my profile carry a decent weightage for applying MBA abroad.

Please give me your valuable suggestions :)

Hi Sameer/ Arun / Others

Thanks for your views/advice/encouragement.

Need your help on a very important decision I am about to make.

I am a PGDBM (Marketing) from XLRI Jamshedpur, class of 09 and am working in a MNC Bank for the last three years. I have always been fascinated to do a MBA from a global Top b-school (been enamored with the faculty & teaching methodology in the States).

Other important reasons are-
1. It gives a global exposure and hence a good understanding of business on a global scale.
2. You get to interact/ network with people who matter
3. Top responsibilities in an organisation (global) are generally held by people with a global MBA (which the Indian MBAs, unfortunately, cannot be said to be). Hence it fast tracks your career both in terms of position & compensation.

Basically i want to kick start my career on a global level, and having worked in a MNC, feel a MBA from a top global b-school will help me reach there, a la my idols Rajat Gupta, Anshu Jain & Rakesh Kapoor. I am looking at only three colleges- HBS, Stanford & Wharton.

Now my queries:
1. Is my thought process correct that an MBA from these institutes will be worthwhile to fast-track my career (and am speaking from a global perspective. Am on a fast track program in the Indian context)
2. Does a 2nd MBA from these colleges add value? I already have a MBA from one of India's good schools- so what increment can be expected.
3. Any other schools you would recommend.

I am sorry if i have not been able to objectify what exactly my thoughts are. They are, as like me, in a highly confused state 😃

My profile: Xth- 90%, XIIth- 80%, BSc (Biology)- 74%, XL- 70%, Have a work ex of 3+ years in Banking- Sales, Sales support & Marketing (Brand management).

Do let me know if you need any other info. Moderators- Pls re-post if I have used he wrong thread

Hi estel123, I agree that you have a problem with the academic scores and the placements. But you should tackle this challenge head on. Do some introspection on what went wrong and how can you improve things for you, for the future.

Think about what you want to do on the the job front, make a list of companies that you would like to work with and try approaching them (HR departments or through your network). Think of another degree at this time only if it seems an absolute must for you. Afterall, studying abroad is an expensive option.

I fear you are considering studying because of a lack of direction, but unless you are very convinced about it, you may land up not enjoying the course at all, and possibly spoiling yoru grades.

Thank you very much.

I really appreciate your concern, but I am not considering an MBA because I am in the soup per se. I always had the plan to do it in the back of my head... Initially I wanted to gain some work experience before proceeding with it. But since I couldn't get the job I desired, I am looking at the possibility of signing up for an early career MBA.

Could you please suggest some of the well-known EC MBA courses across the world?
