I have been selected for MBA at IIT madras but i am a bit apprehensive about joining the institute and therefore thinking about preparing for GMAT.

My aim is to work in a Marketing Analytics profile...

Hi All ,

My profile is as below :

I took the GMAT a week back and scored 750(50-Q, 40-V, awa -5.5).

Work Experience :
2 yrs in Software Development in Finance domain in an MNC. I was thinking of applying for fall 2013 and I am extremely confused and searching for the answers to the following questions :

Hi Varun,

Applicants with lesser work experience can pull out relevant experiences from their non work life to prove their capabilities. For instance you can talk about your experience as a committee lead at college, or any other activities that you are involved in (volunteering, any special hobbeis/ interests). However, you'll still need to talk about your strengths/ achievements at work.

I am looking to move out of IT into other sectors and towards the business side. Would like to do consulting or strategy after an MBA. Is prior experience in such roles necessary before applying ?

If you have had no exposure at all to the business side (client interactions, working with cross-functional teams) in the past two years, it will be difficult to make a solid case about why you want to move over to consulting/ strategy.

With this profile what range of ranks should i target ? Which schools will be happy with this kind of profile ?

This is a broad question. What are your expectations from your MBA education?

Also how can i elevate my profile to make it suit the schools standards? Will my less work ex be a negative point? Is working for one more year and then applying a better idea ?

All b-schools look for leadership capabilities. From this perspective, if you have not got too many chances to lead, maybe you can wait 1-2 years.

Hi Namita,

Could you please help me out of this dilemma? ---
I am due to appear for an interview in BITS Pilani, for the MBA program 2012-2014. I have heard from the seniors in the campus and on PG that BITS is being under rated because it happens to conduct its entrance at a time when other exams are done with. I wanted to go for a neutral opinion here.

I would quote the following remarks that were posted by some students studying there-
"average package- 7 to 7.5 lacs ; excellent case studies ; great faculty ; and the brouhaha follows.."

I have scored 110 in their MAT exam ( Have not seen any one posting a score around it). I intend to take up a marketing major subject.

My profile :

10th - 88%
12th - 91%
B.tech (ECE) - 70%

Curriculars:

1. Joint Secretary- GNIX Students Club, GCET Campus
2. Marketing and Event Management Head
3. Editor , Society Magazine and Newsletter.
4. Relationship Head , GNIX - Greater NOIDA Colleges.

Internship :

1. "Creating Brand Awareness" - @ White Swan Consultancy Group, New Delhi.
Headed by - Dr. Anjali Nigam , Head TeNeT Group (IIT Madras) and specialist in 'Business Enterprise Management' from the Manchester, UK .

Team size - 10 People , 6 from IIT -M and 4 from GCET.

Work- Ex :

18 Months, Banking Domain , TCS.

Please suggest if BITS is a college I should go for.

hi

I would request yr suggestion for the best possible MBA course for me.

I have 18 yrs experience in sales & mktg in NON - IT and I have done my B.Tech ( from a state eng college) and also a PGDBA some 18 years back. At present I am a Vice President - Mktg with a large company. I am about 41 now. Have travelled extensively across the world to over 30 countries.
My GMAT 670/5.5 - first attempt given in Mar'12.

I am looking for another MBA from a reputed institute like IIMs or may be abroad, to push my career in to a senior level- business head kind of position, above the realms of mktg.

I am considering IIM - Indore - EPGP & IIM A-B-C-L Executive MBA

Are they a good choice for a candidate like me.
OR an overseas MBA is a better option.

I need balance between the relevance of the insitute to my career & my chances of selection in a business school considering my age & my GMAT score .

Thanks for yr early reply

Hello,

Please evaluate my profile and highlight some schools where I have a realistic chance of admission.

Indian Male, 25 Years

GMAT Score: 700 (Q50 V34)

Undergrad Degree: B. Tech. Computer Science (IP University, Delhi)

Undergrad performance : 71.64%

Work Experience : 3 Years till date

Details about Work Experience
1) Started a venture that combined online marketing, search engine optimization and online promotion of businesses. The venture specializes in improving the online presence of offline businesses and products and consulting them. Encountered lots of challenges of a startup and managed the risks well.
2) The business grew well and flourished as we enhanced our services, domains and options.
3) The business is still going strong and we have around 80% international clients and 20% local clients.

Post-MBA Plans: I would either want to work as a consultant for upcoming businesses and entrepreneurs (due to my experience) or engage in online marketing after MBA. I also wish to continue creating new businesses.

Tech 3, Nice, interesting profile, especially the bit about e-sports. Is that related to sports betting?

You would need to refine your career goals. Some questions that should think about: If you are already so successful with the venture, why do you want to get back to b-school/ what skills and knowlledge gaps do you hope to fulfil?
Additionally, why not get the MBA to increase your present business as opposed to joining a consulting firm? what about yoru association with the present firm?
What about building a business related to e-sports- as you have mentioned its an upcoming field in India and you have a clear passion for it?

Hi Naveen,

Unfortunately I do not know much about the program, so I will not be the right person to comment. Maybe you should post on other related forums on PG.

A general advice is that you talk to current students when you go to the campus for interview. Prepare your questions well in advance so that you can make the best out of your interaction with them.

Also try reaching out to some of the alumni.

All the best,

I don't think you can. You must have signed some agreement with IMT when you accepted admission. Read the fine print there and go by it. It will not be worth getting in trouble if you step over the wrong side and then get found out.

hi, need your advice in finalizing the b-schools for my MBA. let me brief you about my profile.

Indian/IT/Male (26 years)
Total work-ex: 4.5 years, all in IT (Present exp, will be completing 5.5 years once I start my MBA). My all experience is in offshore ( India location, Mumbai and Pune), since I was working for product company for around 4 years. I was on deputation for 3 months in Bangalore, India for knowledge transfer. Received award for good performance during this KT process.
GMAT: 720 (q-50, v-3 AWA 4.0 . 28-Apr-2012.
Interest: MBA in consultancy. Want to pursue path of management consultant, specially in finance domain.
ECC:
Working as volunteer for my company's social service arm Oureach. Received few certificates for volunteer work ( blood donation etc)
Core member for social service Safosh, which helps in educating and taking care of orphaned children.
Member of National Service Scheme in College for 3 years. received all the 3 ( A, B & C) certificates. Participated in many social service campaign like pulse polio, educating villagers.

Now, I have some budget constraints for my MBA. Although my parents are in good financial position, I do not want to trouble them for my education. In fact, I want to finance my education using my own means. I have saved ~1 million INR ( 20K USD) for my education. I can go for the loan for the rest of the amount, but I need to keep the capital required for my MBA to as low as possible. With this thing in mind, I have prepared a b-school list for me, which, I believe, have "best value for mba" colleges.

GSB-University of cape town.
ISB, Hyderabad, Mohali, INDIA.
SP Jain GMBA. Singapore, Dubai, Sydney.
INSEAD
Texas A&M; University: Mays
National University of Singapore
Nanyang Technical University
Coppead, Brazil
Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School
IIM-C PGPEX
IIM-I EPGP

Now I need your advice here. From the list above, which school I should target closely. The schools which can help me achieving goals, with the finances and career per se. Please do not hesitate to add any college to this list.

Hello , I know there must have been some other threads about executive MBA on this forum but i have question about EMBA for overseas citizen of india (foreign passport holder) .
Brief background about me , Age : 27 , I am Canadian citizen and I have been working as senior software developer in Canada since 3.5 years now and totally hate it. I started my career in Canada only , i have never worked in India even for 1 day.
Now here is my question , as i mentioned i dont want to work as developer (not even as team lead in future) because i hate technical stuffs and don't see myself doing it for rest of my life. some of you might suggest me to go for PM position or so and it is not a bad option however i know i will eventually stuck in this position too :nono:
Here is my goal , I want to open my own business , i have some rough plans in mind and not sure how EMBA will help me but for time being in order to come out of technical position and get some experience in management i am looking into it.
I am visiting india and i always had IIM in my mind like dream since i left india. since i am looking into EMBA not 2 yrs full time MBA as i feel i am too old for 2 yrs full time MBA and since i got experience i shd go for EMBA.

my questions to you :
1) how EMBA will help boost up my career (if i want to become PM then i can go for PMP certification instead)
2) how much indian IIM EMBA will be recognized in Canada/Us or anywhere outside india.
3) some of my frds told me i shd go for canadian/american university for EMBA rather than IIM india.
3) What is the bottom line of doing EMBA except getting promotion in career, does it really teach you how to do business or take business decisions ?

i am being confused and wasting my time in confusion , please pour your valuable suggestions.

Thanks

Hi... First of all a great initiative this one... an objective analysis of profile.
My Profile is as follows:

GMAT:
720
IELTS: Overall 8.0 Band
(yet to give TOEFL)
Education: B.Tech in CSE from NIT with 7.4 CGPA
Work Experience: (total work ex of 28 months as of date)
(i) Working in RBI since October, 2011
(ii) IT experience of 16 months
(iii) Teaching experience in IMS of 4 months
Certifications: Derivative (Dealer's Module) certification from NCFM (National Stock Exchange)
Extra Curricular: (i) Was U-15 State Chess Champion. Have won various inter-school and inter-college tournaments
(ii) Was member of a team which founded the college's first ever student newsletter.
(iii) Conceived and implemented the idea of inter-hostel virtual stock trading game
(iv) have been a stock market participant since high school
(v) involved in part time NGO work in my previous organization. Still looking for new opportunities in my present organization.

Queries:
Q1.
I have gaps in between my work experience. There is a gap of 4 months when I joined Bank after leaving my IT job. During this time I earned money by share trading and I backpacked through the country. Is this gap a matter of concern? How do I make up with it?
Q2. Is my profile (the duration and quality of my work-ex) suitable for a top league school like INSEAD or one of the Ivy-Leagues?
Q3. Any suggestions to improve my profile or any other areas of improvement.
Q4. I want to make a career in asset/portfolio management and start my own fund house someday. I wish to pursue higher education for the same. In light of above can you also suggest would a Masters in Finance in Princeton be a suitable course or should I just apply for MBAs and seek specialization in the same.
Q5. Further, can you help me prioritize the following B-schools as per my chances of success and suitability. I am looking for a big brand and specialty in finance and I want to limit the number of schools I apply to, at least in the first round.

NYU Stern
Said Business School, Oxford
London Business School
INSEAD
IMD, Switzerland
Wharton
ISB
Columbia Business School

Please recommend any other schools too, if you find them to be suitable.

Thanks a lot. Really appreciative of what you folks are doing here.

Cheers...

i am being confused and wasting my time in confusion , please pour your valuable suggestions.

Thanks

You are looking at the wrong program - with 3.5yrs you should either be looking at a 2yr program or a 1yr MBA program. E-MBAs are generally for Executives with tons of experience who don't have the time to attend a full 1yr program. Even IIM-As PGPX program clearly states "substantial work-ex"

If you are looking at 1yr program - Richard Ivey MBA program in Canada is fantastic and it's a 1yr program - a far better option for you.

Hi... First of all a great initiative this one... an objective analysis of profile.
My Profile is as follows:

....

NYU Stern
Said Business School, Oxford
London Business School
INSEAD
IMD, Switzerland
Wharton
ISB
Columbia Business School

LBS, INSEAD, IMD are ambitious programs and given the paucity of your work-ex, probably out of your league. The average work-ex at those places is 60months and higher. IMD clearly states on their website that they expect applicants to be able to fly out, at their own cost, to the school just to interview. Never mind that you may not even be offered admission.

Given that you have age on your side i would suggest a 2yr program rather than 1yr program - Wharton, Stern, Columbia, Chi-Booth are great for fin programs. However, the fin market is dicey in America, especially for Indians so if you don't make it to a top-10 school, it's going to be very hard. You haven't mentioned what you do in RBI but hopefully it's on the Fin side? You need more work-ex with RBI then because it only strengthens your case for a career in Fin.

p.s. I am NOT a consultant.

thanks a lot Neo...
I work in Non-Banking supervision.. basically supervising NBFCs (non-banking finance companies)...
as for the average work-ex.. the official college data (by INSEAD) shows maximum concentration around 3-5 year of work experience.
Anyway. Just wanted to know if there are any good branded schools which accept folks with 2-3 years of work ex?
and do you have any information about the Masters programme in Princeton?
