ISB or IIM?

ISB or IIM? Most of the MBA aspirants from India have this question while planning for their MBA. It is difficult for them to choose between the two. However both these B-Schools are distinct from each other in various aspects. It is very important to understand the requirements of the B-Schools before applying to them.

IIMs are a familiar name among the students who are planning for an MBA since decades in India. With its presence in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Kozhikode and Lucknow, IIMs have set a benchmark in the Indian management education. But with the rise of ISB the aspirants from India got a world class B-Schools with international standards. Indian students had reasons to think beyond the Ivey league B-Schools and IIMs. IIMs had only a less number of seats for their PGPX programs, while ISB has more than 700 seats for the aspirants which made the candidates attracted toward it. Unlike IIMs the selection criteria was not too strict which allowed the ISB to gain confidence. But it is not possible for anyone to get an admission at ISB. At ISB average GMAT score is around 711 and average work experience is around 4 years. Students with good and proven management skills always had an upper hand at the time of admissions. However at IIMs the candidate's previous academics and average work experience of 6+ years was given weightage. This means if you are aiming at the IIMs PGPX program you should start the preparation right from you matriculation rather than an age which you decide to mold you career.

With all these reasons and being one of its kind global B-School in India, ISB started gaining importance among the young minds who are looking to make a career shift and an career progress. Moreover ISB also started programs like Young Leaders Program and Early Entry Option which gave options to aspirants to apply while they are in college and soon after their graduations. If you are aiming to be part of this world class MBA program, start your preparations without wasting any time.

Try getting a 720+ in your GMAT and prepare you application essays well. However if you need to talk to the alumni of ISB to understand your chances, you may always PM.

Best,

Neha

sir!

if I apply to isb with my present gmat score (660) and profile and my application is rejected in the first round, do i have the option of submitting JUST the NEW GMAT SCORE before the second round of counseling (Jan)?

Hello All,

Posting this query because I'm unsure if I should proceed on this quest or not.

I was not keen taking the GMAT till now, but lately given the experience from International Bschools and the value it holds, I'm really excited to take up the exam.

So, I have planned on taking the exam Nov. end and thus giving me about a month's time for undertaking all the application, SOPs etc processes for the B-schools so that I make it in time for R2 or R3 if I'm real lucky.

Scored a decent 540 in my the practice tests. So, I'm really looking forward to improve my scores and give the exam.

Do you think I should carry forward with this 'action plan' or should I give it time and take it the next year?

All suggestions are most welcome. Thanks!

My GMAT exam is coming soon. Kindly rate my awa essay. Thanks in advance! 😃

ESSAY QUESTION:The following appeared in The Homebuilder magazine, a local publication with a focus on construction and sale of real-estate properties:

"According to the most recent survey of our readers, nearly 70% of the respondents indicated that they are planning to build or purchase a new home over the next 2 years. These results indicate that the growth in the construction industry is likely to accelerate in the near future. Therefore, this industry continues to offer lucrative opportunities for investment."

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound.

RESPONSE:The argument claims that the growth of construction industry is likely to accelerate in the near future and will therefore continue to offer lucrative opportunities for investment. The reason cited for this prediction is that in a survey conducted on the readers of The Homebuilder magazine, nearly 70% of the respondents indicated that they plan to build or buy a new home within the next 2 years. Stated in this way the argument manipulates facts and present a distorted view of the situation.

Firstly, the argument states that 70% of the respondents of the survey plan to construct or buy a new home in next 2 years but the argument does not state that how many people of these 70% are planning to construct a new home rather than purchasing a already constructed home. If the proportion of people purchasing an already constructed new home is quite higher than the people who plan on building a new home then the argument's conclusion of accelerated growth in construction industry becomes weak. The argument could have been clearer if it explicitly stated that what proportion of those 70% readers will actually construct a new home.

Secondly, the argument assumes that the readers of the magazine are sufficient to represent the overall thought process of the people. But the argument does not provide any information about the type of reader this magazine has. For example, if the reader base is mainly of the urban area, we cannot infer the same conclusion for the people of rural are as well. Moreover, the argument also fails to provide information about the popularity of the magazine, that is, the number of readers it has as compared to the entire population of that region. If the reader base is very small then it cannot accurately represent the people of that region.

Finally, the argument fails to mention how the survey was conducted. Did all the readers of the magazine took part in it?
What type of questions were asked from them? How many of the 70% indicated to actually construct a new home? Without some convincing answers to all these questions, one is left with the impression that the argument is more of a wishful thinking rather than a substantive evidence.

In conclusion, the argument is flawed and unconvincing for the above mentioned reasons. It could have been substantially strengthened if the author explicitly stated all the relevant facts. In order to assess the credibility of a certain argument,it is essential to have full knowledge of all the contributing factors. In this particular case, popularity of the magazine, type of reader base of the magazine , how the survey was conducted and proportion of those 70% people that want to construct a new home remains unknown. Without this information the argument remains unsubstantiated and open to debate.

Hi! Would appreciate if someone answers this query of mine -

Which Universities are better when it comes to MiM courses ? The US ones or the European ones ? I ask this because all the rankings, including the MiM ranking by FT, only enlist the European ones! I couldn't find a comprehensive list which had both the Universities anywhere . . Broadly the parameters I'm looking at are quality of teaching and placement record.

Thank you 😃

Hi!

I would appreciate if somebody could help me narrow down a couple of schools that offer "MBA in India" option, wherein a part of the course is completed in India and the other part internationally - for example, the Schulich School of Business.

Thank you 😃

With the application season on, many aspirants have doubts about whether their profile is good enough to apply and what colleges to select. I have been receiving a lot of private messages and apologize for answering late, for the sheer reason that every day is a DEADLINE.

Here are a few pointers to help you navigate through the application cycle:

1. Plan and manage your time well. It is better to sweat it out during preparation rather than bleed in the battlefield!! (Metaphorically speaking of course!!) 😃

2. Create an excel sheet and maintain a record of all your research and information you collect while looking at business schools.

3. Zero in on the few whose offerings align with your professional and personal aspirations. Look at class size, curriculum, specializations, industry wise breakage of placements, scholarship options, brand value and return on investment.

4. Now, start establishing personal connections. Get your profile evaluated BY the admissions committees. Connect with current students and alumni. Start talking to them. Connect with professors who teach subjects of your interest and/or are industry experts. Before you start, make sure you have a list of legible questions to ask.

5. Start researching on companies that hire on campus and attract you, keeping your short term and long-term goals in mind.

6. Hopefully, you're done with the GMAT and TOEFL by now if you're geared for R1. If you're working on increasing your score, keep the list of colleges in handy because it will help you stay focused.

7. Identify recommenders and speak to them beforehand to avoid last minute glitches.

8. Create accounts for your prospective schools. This way you'll get information about roadshows, information sessions, webinars which are happening now.

9. Make a plan of action; chalk out milestones and stick to achieving them.

10. There are a lot of rumours floating around related to profiles and applications. What happens with one need not become a trend. Believe in your profile and information you get from schools.

Good Luck and God Bless!

when is GMAT 15/16 test conducted? what is the procedure of applying for it?

Hi! I am new on this Forum, and need assistance.

I am going to give the GMAT & TOEFL in Oct, and will be applying by end of Oct-Nov (first week of November). My Profile:

1. COO of a Top 100 Start-up in India from the field of E-Commerce specializing in Safety. We were self-sustaining and did not raise any investment, the founders are funding it themselves.

Was Marketing Head when I joined in June-14, and was promoted to COO by December-14 and have been working as the same since. I was handling all operations, including but not limited to Marketing, Operations, Logistics, Product Development, Tech-Development, Customer Care and more. Created Processes and SOPs, and implemented them.

2. Used to do front-end Design work as well, both UI & UX and well versed in the technical skills needed for the same.

3. Prior to June-14, I had setup my own start-up which was building a Web-Based product. We had setup in Mar-Apr'13 and grew from the founding team of 3 to 21. We were not able to connect to the right people and in the end got absorbed by one of the clients. (The E-Commerce Portal mentioned above)

4. May'12-Mar'13, I was co-founder of a Services based start-up. Was handing Designing, Marketing, and Online Marketing teams. We used to conduct corporate Sports Events as well, just because we were passionate about the sports. Even though I had left the firm in Jun'14, the firm has gone on to conduct national level corporate events with matches taking place all over 4 cities in India.

5. Graduated in May'12 as a BTech in CSE from a Government Engg College in Punjab. Scored 71%.

In the Mock Tests I am easily scoring above 680-700.

Was really active in Co-Curricular and Sports, College Captain for Football, as well as was awarded with best student award by a society amongst students of 5 states. Did a lot more, but I doubt that the college would be looking such history.

6. Finished Schooling in Delhi. Was above average student, with both sports and co-curricular activities in the profile.

Now that I have given a rough outline about my profile, I need assistance with the following queries:

1. Am I too late in giving the GMAT, cause I will be needing a Scholarship, will I be able to get into a course starting July-Sept'16?

2. How to select colleges?

I am interested in Entrepreneurial Studies, as I love working in entrepreneurial environment and would like to do research in the same.

3. I am prepared with Quant & Verbal, need assistance with College Application process and AWA. Did not take any course, self-studied so I think I lack confidence in College Application Essay and AWA.

I am open to suggestions across the globe, just want to select the best possible opportunity.

I would appreciate any kind of assistance.
