Hello all,

First, accept my sincere apologies for starting a new topic if this has already been discussed or if I should have added my query in the existing threads. (Seniors/admins are humbly requested to kindly direct me to existing links if they feel the need to do so)

Now coming to my question. I reside in New Delhi and currently giving the final sem exam of 2 years full time MAHRM. I am JRF qualified (in HR) and hold a 2 year full time PGDM in HR/IT. I am desperate to get into a PSU in the HR Mgmt/Executive Trainee profile. I am very weak in maths and scored a miniscule 48.75 out 120 in the result NTPC Executive Trainee Selection Test. The cut-off score of NTPC was 75.75

Now these are my questions :

1. Would it be a good idea to join a Bank PO institute for SAIL exam ?

2. I am absolutely novice in maths. I have already wasted around 25K in past in CL for CAT coaching where I realized that i was the odd one out there because even before the completion of questions on the board, engineers were able to answer the question. If bank PO aspirants are also the same, it would be just committing the same mistake again.

3. The exam is after 65 days. Is the time enough to clear the written test ?

4. What are good bank PO institutes in Delhi ?

Thanks in Advance

Hi,

Pls find your answers below:

1. The level of difficulty of questions testing your quantitative aptitude skills is nearly the same in all PSU papers, be it NTPC or SAIL .... It is somewhere in between that of CAT and Bank PO, meaning the level of difficulty of QA in PSU papers is lesser than CAT but greater than Bank PO papers ....
2. Bank PO aspirants are nowhere near as good as CAT aspirants in "QA" .... You'll not find too many engineers, steam-rolling over you, over there .... Yes, it will make sense to enroll for a Bank PO coaching for preparation of "QA" part of SAIL like exams....
3.65 days is a lot of time to prepare for Bank PO ....

PS:I got through NTPC ET-HR written exam for 2012, and have a got a call-letter for GD/PI, but I never got to know my marks in the test .... How do you know that you scored 49 and the cut-off was 75? Did u get any score card? ...

Thanks for the response. I lost hope of getting a response. Heartiest congratulations for your selection in the test. It seems the selected candidates haven't got their scores. I was unselected and hence i got mine. I know another candidate who got select in this exam but didn't get her/his score.

Guess what, we would most probably be meeting at PMI Noida during the time of your GD/PI. I would be there to assist the HR Manager, Core Recruitment Group. I would be joining NTPC (Corp. Office, Scope) as summer trainee from 17th May. I was also present last year in the joining formalities of ET-2011 candidates (I am presently giving my final sem exams of MAHRM)
I have few more questions for you.

1. What books/materials you referred for HR/Aptitude ?
2. How long you studied for this exam ?
3. Any other important exam tips for the exam ?
4. Where are you from and in which subjects you did your PG and Graduation ?
5. Was this your first attempt of a PSU exam ?
I hope i am not troubling you with my questions (you can also PM me). Actually i would be giving SAIL exam after two months, hence i am very curious to know the relevant details.

Well, first of all, thanks :)
1. For aptitude, I just went through the "BRM" material from IMS for CAT (very briefly) .... Just a few basic concepts .... I had appeared for CAT-2009, by the way .... For HR, I referred to my MBA text-books .... Mostly on "Labour Laws" .... A little bit here and there on other subjects
2. Dude, I am working as Manager-HR for Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance ... My day starts at 9 am and ends at 8 pm in office, so I couldn't find much time to study .... In total, I didn't study for more than 6-7 hrs .... (Not trying to be boastful or anything, just telling you genuinely)
3. Just one-tip .... For HR-Cover as many areas of the syllabus as possible, just do it briefly .... An "overview" is enough for clearing these PSU objective questions .... Don't go too much into detail .... For Aptitude-Refer to the basic study material of MBA/PO preparation .... just keep at it, till you get your basics straight .... Then practice, if you have time ....
4. Well sir, I basically belong to Lucknow .... Was born and brought up there .... Moved to Mumbai for my MBA which I completed from ICFAI Business School (IBS-Mumbai).... For my first job, I was selected from campus by Kotak and posted in Chennai .... I have been working for 15 months now .... I did my 10+2 with PCM, then B.Com, then completed CA (Inter) only, then did my MBA (HR)....
5. No, this was my 2nd PSU exam .... Had appeared for Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) last year and cleared the written .... Did not appear for PI .... So, I am no PSU veteran, but I have had my share of success ....

Thank you for sharing so much. I need to concentrate on the Aptitude part this time. I read for 5 different MBA book, thoroughly with going twice with the OB book. But didn't touch Quant except DI from RS Aggarwal. Spent maximum time on that DI question which was the first question of the aptitude part in my NTPC set. Couldn't do time effective time management. What suggestion you would give me for time management ?

I didn't saw labour law much in NTPC paper ? Did you find substantial of it in your set? I am planning to join national school of banking for bank PO coaching for my SAIL exam ? Have you heard of it ? Can you suggest me any good bank PO institutes ?

Can't suggest you any name on the Bank PO institutes .... No knowledge abt the same .... But in my opinion, it doesn't matter which instt. you go to .... You just need some basic brushing up of QA/DI ....

I completed my paper in 1hr 15 mins ..... For better time management, do the following .....

1. For every 5 questions, set yourself some time and clock it .... If u are not able to complete those 5 questions in the time you have set for yourself, move on ..... And try to finish the next 5 in a "Set Time" .... Divide your time in such a way that time is kept for you to "come back" to the questions that you had left .....
2. Practice practice practice ..... Do a lot of "Sample papers" for aptitude tests .... It'll increase your speed make your "time management" skills better .....

And pls don't refer too many books ..... Otherwise, you'll get yourself in a mess ....

Feel free to write if u need anything else .....

How many questions you attempted in HR and Aptitude ? (approx.) SAIL has not given its format for the written test. Is R. S. Aggarwal good for practice ? and what about maths tricks? do they help ?

I attempted 113 out of 120 questions in all .... I think I left 3 questions unanswered in HR and 4 unanswered in Aptitude .... RS Aggarwal is definitely good ..... But try some "sample papers" from the net for practice .... And u can refer to your basic prep material from Career Launcher also, apart from joining Bank PO coaching .....

Not quite sure of what you mean by "maths tricks" .... I don't use any such tricks .... Just basic fundas+logical approach should do it for you ....

oh, that's quite a number. infact during my last stay at NTPC, i asked one of the finance candidates and he also said that he did 110 out of 120. How much sure you were with the accuracy of your answers ? I sold my CL material 4 years ago, i never ever knew that i would be going to give PSU exam in future. I wanted to build a career in teaching because i wasn't comfortable with the corporate culture. Hence I did another full time masters just to become eligible for UGC-NET. Anyway, it was only after witnessing the work culture of NTPC, i just got an instant temptation to be at that place. Anyway, i was referring to a book called quicker maths by M. Tyra.

I was 100% sure about 80 answers .... For another 30, I was able to narrow down my options to 2 options through "elimination", and then took a guess (Going by simple probability, if I got half-right and half wrong---probability being 1:2, I would still get "positive" marks, despite 1/4 negative marking) .... While 3 were random guesses ..... The 7 questions I left, I was afraid to even take a guess otherwise I would have done them too ....

Try and buy-back your study material then ....

It'll really help

And pls tell me what all were your observations about NTPC's "culture" ..... I think this discussion has been meaningful for both of us .... I am getting to learn as much from you, as you are learning from me .... šŸ˜ƒ

Then if i have to buy back my study material, then i have to be confused between joining the bank PO coaching or self study. Because I can buy study material in Delhi at peanuts from Sheikh sarai and Nai Sadak. But since i would anyway be getting study material from institute, it would another waste of money. The bank PO coaching is for around 7K for 2.5 months

Join the coaching then .... No substitute for interactive learning .... Plus they'll give you some material too I guess .... And tell me more about "NTPC's" culture .... which tempted you towards a PSU job ....

Sure, that's a good question. As a typical indian and 'aam aadmi', i went there with the stereotype that being a government organization, people would be rude and stubborn and would treat me as though they have done a big favor by giving me an opportunity to be in NTPC as HR intern. the reality was totally different. I was allotted under HR Manager, Core Recruitment Group. From the day 0 itself, he was very friendly with me and from day 0 he gave me work. After a week at SCOPE, Lodhi Road (this was last year), he asked me to assist him in joining formalities of ET-2011 batch (Engineering/Finance) at PMI, Noida. I was asked to make daily reports on excel on the status of candidates (Medically fit/unfit, Provisionally selected, Selected etc) and finally a consolidated report of the entire status. I was given meaningful work and he took me a part of his recruitment team for ET-2011 joining. The data given by me was also part of the data he needed. Moreover, during my entire stay, i asked many questions related to my project and even general questions and he never excused him from replying. I was given a separate table and desk, right next to his cabin with separate internet connection ( I am mentioning this because some of my contemporaries hardly had a place to sit in their respective field work organizations). I was also given free lunch coupons during the joining process. Also it was not only him but even other people from NTPC were friendly and cooperative. None of them deliberately delayed my work. Trainees have to get a temporary icard made during their tenure. The security staff did that with a smile. I also got my experience letter within 5 minutes. Data entry operator didn't say that come at evening or come tomorrow. As he was free at that time, he immediately took the details and took the print out. More so, during my latest training (I had two month long trainings, one last year in Sep and one this year in Feb) . I also had to make a HR project. He assisted me getting the questionnaire designed and also sent me to PMI, Noida to gather the response from Finance candidates in Noida and instructed his colleague at PMI to allow me to take responses from the Finance trainees. So it was overwhelming with me that he trusted me to assist him in his work, gave me meaningful work, utilized my work, assisted me in my HR project and was always available for my queries related to my college's assignments. And the best part was that most of them (people from Core recruitment group) always looked busy in their work. None of them were idly chatting with each other or just wasting their time doing nothing. Now from here, i would get subjective but since you asked i have to tell what I liked. The work culture was very much Indian (and this is the biggest reason i have developed an antipathy towards corporations). None of the employees were showoffs, having attitudes on their sleeves, flaunting their gadgets, cracking silly PJs, discussing movies, music or doing bitching or indulging in meaningless gossips, partying over one thing or another (as if their purpose of creation was only to party) etc. This is what dislike about working in corporates and since I didn't find anything of this, it instantly attracted me towards NTPC. This is the only reason I am going again to NTPC otherwise I could have asked my fieldwork in-charge to get me placed in some other organization to have variety in my resume as I have already spent two months in NTPC. But i am a stability seeking person and I don't want to take chances. Also i hope to squeeze time for my studies. So this was a brief summary of my experience at NTPC which motivated me apply for PSU exams. Although I don't know the work culture of SAIL but being a Maharanta, I hope it would be similar to that of other Maharatna organizations. (I have more of positive things to mention but won't do so as I am skeptic of mentioning them on a public forum). You are free to PM for more details.

Thanks for this ... Really great to know all these things

Can You guys please suggest me some books for the HR part of the SAIL exam? šŸ˜‰

Hi All...really good to know about the work culture of NTPC. I am also appearing for the interview for ET-Finance. Do you have any what is the ratio of number of candidates they call for interviews?
