Globalisation and Labour, TISS, Mumbai

Information dissemination about the course and doubt clearance of aspirants.

At the very outset , let me caution you that it's not an MBA (or an MBA equivalent course) and definitely not an HR course. But at the same time, it is surely one of the professional courses which will provide you a firm footing in the market (specially, labour market and development sector). The course is an exclusive one and one of its kind. Earlier it was developed to suit the needs of trade unions only, but with expansion of labour market the course has been appropriately modified to keep it at par with the ongoing trends.

Some of the courses which we study are social protection and state, industrial jurisprudence, conflict management, governance and public policy, dynamics of labour market, etc. So the curriculum is self explanatory in describing the opportunities that you can get after studying this course. The core strength of the course lies in trio of academia + field work + internships. The kind of organisations where you intern will play a key role in deciding the future trajectory of your careers. To give you a few examples some of our seniors are working with the state governments on key schemes like Aajeevika of the NRLM (National Rural Livelihood Mission), few of them have interned with ministries like Labour and Skill Development, organisations like NSDC( National Skill Development Organisation). A few have worked with PSU's like IOCL and at the same time some have carved their paths into the corporates and CSR(which is an emerging field).

So by now it becomes quite clear that placements are not an issue for our course and in that case, we have the added advantage of having a short batch strength. But the candidate needs to be aware of his/her interests and potentials. What is implied here is that one has to decide in which sector you can stay and contribute. Accordingly you will have to develop your own skill sets apart from the curricula (if you want to rise higher). To help you with this, the professors are here to guide you. And the senior batch is always there to help (again our short batch strength comes to our help as one on one interaction becomes quite easy). We have our own dedicated placement committee which will take care of the fact that not even a single candidate aspiring for the job is denied an opportunity to work.

The options to go for higher studies, research and fellowships is always there. A few of our alumni have achieved the German Chancellor Fellowship which again adds to your perspectives and skill sets. TISS as a brand and labour as an ongoing trend will provide you the opportunities to explore these niche areas. A few have even worked with the ILO.

Hence, the arena is wide open provided one makes the right choices at the right time and is open to learn, communicate, explore and shine.
