Date and location: 5 Feb, Kolkata

Name: sourav
CAT percentile: 99.94
10 : 94.86, 12:92.16
Grad: 8.42, civil engg, IIT (BHU)
Work Ex: 7 months, NHAI
Extra currics: nothing worth mentioning
Details of panel: Only 8 people turned up for the interview, so only one panel was conducting the PI, there wer three profs taking interviews, and as many as seven sitting surrounding us in a semicircle on the left hand side, popping an occassional question here and there.
Duration: 25-30 mins

P1(youngest, he was the one asking most of the questions): so sourav, where are you coming from now?
Me: about how I have been moving because of my job in NHAI, currently where am I deputed, etc

P1: so NHAI! Did u get through campus interview? How do they usually recruit?
Me: about how they recruited for the first time from IITs, they recruit through UPSC, blah blah blah

P1: hmmm, so u got lucky! Good for u! What does NHAI do? What do u do?
Me gyan about how they outsource all the work, do only paperwork , etc

P1: then why is NHAI needed? Where does ur salary come from?
Me: more gyan, random stuff, didnt know exactly about the assets of NHAI, told them

P1: differnece betweem civil engg and structural engg, does transportation engg include only highway engg, how do u assess the safety of a bridge after it is built!
Me: gave some gyan, but was not convincing, could not remember the technical details ( lowest point of my PI)

P2(oldest of them, never seemed to smile, seemed irritated) : here is a statement. Speak on it for a mi ute - india is not suited for parliamentary democracy
Me: it is not totally right to say we are not suited for it, we are a very young democracry, only 65 years old, give is time, we are in the process of ironing out and smoothing our shortcomings, we are thriving not in spite of democracy, but because of it, blah blah

P2: Hold on, you are speaking only against the motion, say something in favour of it
Me: as a parliamentary democracy, we have to respect the parliamentary procedures, debate every motion , take evrybodys view, respect the coalition dharma, it slows things down, projecting a weak leadership( i was going offtopic)

P1: what are your views on the upcoming general elections?
Me: gyan , blah blah blah

P1: tell us about your interests
Me: i like reading books, mostly contemporary indian and pakistani writers, about the life in south asia. How in spite of all differences, we are rooted to the same cultures, grounded in the same soil. I read popular fiction also, mainly forsyth, etc

P2: tell me the essence of " the reluctant fundamentalist", you have read that surely?
Me. Yes sir, (told them the story instead)

P3 ( who had been going through my certificates): why was the author of train to pakistan in news recently?
Me: khushwant singh, but not sure why he was in the news. This year he would turn 99, maybe that was the reason

P3: yeah: ok u may go

as i was stood up and turned to go, one of the seven profs surrounding called: ok last question, which book are you going to read next?
Me : moth smoke, sir

ok u may go!

I did not answer as confidently as I could, but nevertheless, felt good!

for others, all the best guys , be confident! Thats all it takes!

CAT percentile: 99.43

10th, 12th , grad %: 91.2, 79.5, 7.29 CGPA

Work Ex : 34 months in NTPC and 5 months in a start-up that was starting up from scratch.

Details of the panel & Duration of the PI: (Panel-3) P1-cool guy in a T, P2-reserved, P3-only panelist in suit, 20-30 minutes

Questions and your answers in PI:
P3 opened the door for me and P2 offered me to sit.
P1: So, you have work-ex. Why did you leave NTPC and join a start-up?
Me: I wanted some knowledge in business before pursuing MBA and my job lacked that.
P1: Please be honest, we want an honest answer.
Me: Sir, what I mentioned was a real reason. But there was another reason also: my job was getting monotonous.
P1: How did you know that.
Me: ...blabbering....
P1: Tell us about your job.
Me: Told about my job as a maintenance engineer and how I have to manage workers.
P1: That must be challenging to manage them!
Me: Yes....(some blabbering)...Told how workers were a little resistant to orders because of lack of rotation among them to different work-locations and my role in modifying that.
P1: So your job was challenging, not monotonous.
Me: No, for the first few days it was not. But after that rarely I was learning anything different.

P1: OK. What were your favourite subjects in your BTech?
Me: IC engines and Power plant engg.
P1: what are the difference between petrol and diesel engines?
Me: Main is the ignition method. Another is the compression ratio.
P1: How is vibration measured in IC engine?
Me: I don't know sir. I've seen vibration probes being used in NTPC to measure vibration, the reading was in mm.
P1: Why was it in mm...what did it measure?
Me: It measured the displacement from the mean position.
P1: So, was the vibration in axial or any other direction?
Me: Actually, vibration generates wavy-zigzag motion in machines....(I was lacking clarity )....
P1: OK....( P3 takes over)

P3: What is compression ratio? Why is compression more in diesel engine, why not petrol to that level?
Me: Ratio between the pressures of pressurized gas and non-pressurized gas inside the engine (blunder 😞 )....some random stuff about the high boiling point of diesel....
P3: What is knocking?
Me: The uncontrolled ignition of fuel that leads to blasting effect(could not remember detonation).(As I was not sure, told about knocking in both!)
P3: Why is diesel engine more costly?
Me: Diesel engine requires better design and material strength.(missed the point on fuel injector)
P3: Then why do people go for expensive diesel engines?
Me: Because people are mainly concerned with mileage and diesel gives better then petrol. Also, on the long term, diesel engine is more economical.
P3: (looks somewhat satisfied) What are your hobbies?
Me: Playing football and photography.
P3: What camera do you use?
Me: Canon and told the model name.
P3: What is the zoom available in that?
Me: ...told...
P3: What time of the day would you prefer to take a photo?
Me:...my best reply of the interview... 😁
(P2 takes over)

P2: Who are the 2 people who received the highest award of India and what is the award?
Me: It's the highest civilian award of India, Bharat Ratna and SRT and CNR Rao got it.
P2: What do they do?
Me: SRT is the God of cricket and CNR Rao researches on the field of solid state chemistry(told I don't have much knowledge about his work )
P1 intervenes: What is contribution of SRT?
Me: More than 15000 runs in ODIs....interrupted...
P1: Is that why he got the award?
Me: No, he got it for promotion of sports and encouraging youth(seemed the most probable reson, was not sure of the exact reason)

P2: Have you heard about aadhar?
Me: Yes.
P2: Who was the man behind it?
Me: Nandan Nilekani.
P2: Who is he?
Me: Past executive of Infosys and the chief officer for aadhar. (could not remember his post)
P2: Have you heard of UID?
Me: Oh yes. Nandan Nilekani was the chief of UIDAI.(still could utter the word CHAIRMAN)
P2: Do you know Kiran Bedi?
Me: Yes, she was an IPS officer and was a part of the Team Anna in the Jan Lokpal movement.
P2: Other than that do you know anything about her or you know her form that only? (laughs)
Me: Frankly, though I knew her before Jan Lokpal, I read about her mostly for these reasons.
P2: Ok.....thank you.

P1:Thank you for being honest.
P2 & P3: One question. What other calls do you have and given an opportunity to choose where would you like to join? No diplomatic answer.
Me: K and new IIMs. I am not going to join new ones because I've heard from my friends that they lack infrastructure. Between K and S, I can't compare.
P3(other join in chorus): We will not let you go out of this room unless you give us an honest answer.
Me: Sir, really I can't tell which is better on the basis of my knowledge!
(laughter all around...they thank me and ask to take toffees)

Overall Experience including your view of your performance: Not bad-not excellent, no grilling, initially I was a bit nervous...but it vanished soon.

Any suggestions to others: Keep your cool. Don't panic. Keep smiling. And don't lose your composure even if you are not able to answer questions from your strong fields. Do brush up acads and a basic knowledge in GK is what they expect.
