Work Ex: Infosys (30 months)
Date: 27th February, 2017. Venue: The Golkonda Hotel, Hyderabad.
WAT: ' Problems unite us; religion divides us '.
I completed at around 10 minutes mark since there was a 150 word limit but saw everyone was writing long essays anyway; so added a few points later by marking * in the middle . 😛
GD didn't go too well; it was a civil discussion but I could only pitch in 3 times, once with a counterargument and twice with extension of points already made.
Interview: Two panelists, an aged, experienced professor(P1) and a middle-aged lady (P2).
P1: So, tell me about yourself.
Me: Told about my schooling, college and work ex, the kind of work I do. ( I work for Infosys for the Ministry of Corporate Affairs(MCA) for their e-filing system).
P1: So, is there any proactive measure on the MCA to prevent the scams like what happened with Satyam etc.?
Me: Told that at least one whistleblower has to come fwd and complain, MCA has mechanisms to take note of complaints seriously, told them about various front end services for complaints, how complaints are processed in backoffice
P1 interrupted me. : So you work in SAP technology, tell me full form of SAP.
Me: Told
P1: What is BAAN?
I couldn't get this initially. I thought he was talking about Autobahn, but actually he was asking abt the ERP systems company.
Me: Sir, are you talking about Autobahn?
P1: What is Autobahn ?
Me: Told.
P1: Why are they in the news recently?
Me: [I had no idea], told there have been a spate of accidents recently and the German govt. is thinking revoking no-speed limit criteria.
P1: What is the difference between B.tech on CS and B.tech in IT?
Me: Explained somewhat roughly with examples of some subjects. (At this point I was nervous as I had mentioned subjects like automata which I had not studied since 4 years )
P1: How many bytes in a kilobyte?
Me: 1024.
P1: Why 1024?
Me: Explained with the help of switch on-off , 10 switches 2 states etc. (In hindsight, I think it would have been better to explain with bits, 0s and 1s).
P1: What is ASCII?
Me: Told.
P1: Is there a competitive standard to it?
Me: Yes Sir, Unicode standard.
P1: What is the difference ?
Me: Told.
P1: What is NASSCOM? What is its full form? What do they do?
Me: Told.
P1: Who is the chairman of NASSCOM?
Me: Sorry sir, but I'm nt aware.
P1: Can you tell me one famous ex chairman?
Me: Narayana Murthy (wild guess, proved to be a lucky right one later).
P2: What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Me: Told.
P2: What is your CAT percentile ?
Me: Told.
P2: What other calls do you have?
Me: Told.
P2: Ok, thank you , you can leave now.
Overall a very relaxed affair; didnt last more than 15 mins. I thought I could have answered a couple of questions better, but as usual it was the GD which I feel would take me down. 😛
Mechanical Engg; 2+ exp in manufacturing
WAT/GD: Should healthcare services be commercialized.
PI Experience : Moment 1 : " You are into production management, so I think that it is not related to your mechanical Engg studies " ( Tried to explain how it was related )
Moment 2 : <After a few ques related to SI and CI engines> "Tumne to gari kese start hota hai wahi pata nahi hai, Mechanical padhe ho ya nahi" ( I guess I would have answered if I was asked 😄 )
Everything else went smooth.
How to answer Why MBA Question ?
When I was preparing for my Interview long back especially for NMIMS & IIMs, I always dreaded when I was faced with this question “Why MBA”
I always gave some prepared/rehearsed/regurgitated response. All of my answers were like these ones given below.
1. “I was always interested in pursuing business degree after my graduation.”
2. “I always saw myself as an Investment banker.” (Even when I had no idea what an Investment banker does)
3. “During my work, I realized that I was more suited for business side rather than technical side.” (I don’t know how I arrived at this conclusion) And all other responses revolved around this.
a. I want to be in positions of higher responsibility
b. I want to have more decision making power
So I thought of showing you a method to answer this question rather than giving some standard copy-paste answers. I call it “Bridging the Gap” Technique
It includes 5 Steps.Use this 5 step framework to answer this question. If you don’t include all, your answer will be incomplete. (At least try to include as many steps as possible)
1. What experiences have led you to this point and this ambition?
2. Why an MBA now, at this point in your career?
3. What do you want to do with your degree, in the short and long term?
4. Why an MBA from this school particularly?
5. Why an MBA at all? (Why not MS, PhD, switching job/field)
If you try to answer your Why MBA question considering all these 5 steps, then you will have very solid answer to talk about in actual Interview. The most important part you do here is to connect your past to future
The interviewer panel is asking you . You must show that the MBA is the bridge between you yesterday and you tomorrow.
Paint a picture of a future that rests naturally on your past, assuming the MBA from the school in question. Past, present and future can be presented in any order. What works will depend on the details of your situation. You may want to follow this map
- Start with short term goal
- Then get into your long-term goals
- Tell them Why MBA is relevant to these goals
- Support this with what in your past has led you to this point
- Finish it with particular aspects of the B-school that are relevant, attractive to your stated goals
I think this process will help you to fine-tune your “Why MBA” responses, rather than giving the same old responses which don’t work, you will atleast make an effort to think from these 5 different angles and come up with totally different and unique response.
Have a look at this response
"Sales and marketing is something that has always interested me whichis why I decided to pursue my specializations and all internships relating to it (Past)
An MBA will provide me with 3 critical pillars which will help me achieve my short and long term goals.
Firstly it will provide me with a much deeper and formal insight on subjects relating to marketing and sales management (Future)
An MBA from SP-Jain in Marketing will not only enhance my learning through its top notch faculty but will also provide me with a lot of exposure through its global fast track in Darden school of business,University of Virginia and docc programs. (Why the particular B-school)
Secondly it will help network with best brains of the country from diverse backgrounds and interact with top notch faculty who are experts in the field of marketing. (Future)
Moreover my background in BBA-Marketing/Sales will go a long a way in adding value to the PGDM batch particularly in Marketing and Sales. (Present)
Thirdly it will help me in career progression and provide me with an industrial connect and a chance to work with companies like HUL and P & G as branch or area sales manager. (Future)
Moreover working in these companies will give me valuable skills in sales and distribution which will provide me corporate exposure beforeI go back to my our own business" (Future)
(Do you know what happened to him, he converted SP-Jain at just 86%ile with no work experience)
If you have any questions on how to handle "Why MBA" question, comment below or message me personally. I will see if and how I can help you.
Best of Luck for your Interviews.

WAT/GD: " Technology creates income disparity"
I supported this idea by talking about the product based companies and service based companies disparity, how early adapters to technology have a higher probability of making more money and substantiated with some examples. (150 words)
GD: I was third to pitch in and then I made 3-4 valid points in between and also provided chances to my fellow GD mates. Panelist wrote few points about me on their evaluation copy 🙈
My PI experience was really weird. Two Panelists-Male (M) and Female (F) and I was the gullible one (Me)
I was about to enter the room when I heard them talking and thought about waiting outside the room.
M: So you don't have ettiquettes of entering a room, do you?
Me: Sir, actually I heard you talking hence thought about not interferring and hence stood outside.
M: So you were trying to listen to our chit chat?
Me: No sir, I am sorry if it looked like.
M: Sit down and tell me have you heard about John Pickett.
Me: No sir
M: So in GD you talked about UBi what is that.
Me: Sir, I am not aware of that term and hence I didn't talk about it. It might be someone else from our panel.
M: You don't know what Universal Basic Income is..strange.
Me: I am not aware of it's definition and data about it sir.
M: Oh! you are an engineer just like the last one (I was second to go in). So either you don't know anything or you will just guess, right?
Me: Sir I will try to answer whatever I know.
M: In GD, you said something like "Learn to Unlearn", Yeh Kya hai? Even Budhha won't be able to comprehend it.
Me: Sir I used that term to tell that with changing technology it becomes imperative to learnt o unlearn. For example, google launches android software each year and marshmellow was updated to nougat this year. For a person to adapt and use Nougat properly and with any pre conceived idea, he has to learn to unlearn Marshmellow.
M: So any real life scenario you used this strange term of yours.
Me: I tried to give one example but he denied it saying it's expectation vs reality example.
M: tell me the difference between economics, economy and economical. Say I guess first if you don;t know the answer.
Me: Sir I think, economics is the study of human behavior, needs and how he fulfills his need through trade and commerce and economical is how cheap or low cost a product is when we see it's utility. Economy is....
M: You don't know business awareness, you don't know about your job, you don't know about technology. Wasting time here.
Me: Sir I am aware of business...(About say something and he fired questions at will)
M: What is Share buy back.
Me: (I was not aware of the technicality behind this concept) Sir I recently read this term in newspaper where TataDocomo wanted to sell their 26.5 percent shares to tata to get out of the business and Tata and Docomo was in big tussle because of this sharebuy back row,
M: UPI vs e wallets.
Me: E wallets are RBI regulated non banking apps where you store money which can be used in multiple stores for shopping and other services like Paytm and Mobikwik.
M: Don't give me examples continue.
Me: Sure. While UPI are the apps issued by banks which I have really good feature of your banks deatils remaining confidential and only virtual key provided for transaction...Was about to say something...
M: The way where I can do transaction but have no money in my account.
Me: Using credit cards.
M: How does it works?..Hmm...You work for Standard Chartered Bank isn't it? tell me?
Me: Sir I work for information security domain of it.
M: So you don't know it..Leave it...
M: You know anything about the technology info security department uses.
Me: Sir I am first level auditor at bank, my job is...
M: Leave it, you are unware of it. Hindi aati hai? English aati hai? CAT me thi english? Aati nai?
Me: Sir I know hindi as I am from delhi and VA or english is a part of CAT exams.
(They quickly turned the pages of my profile page to seek my CAT score) 🙈
I was scared from inside but still trying to keep a smile. Little humiliated too by seeing the way my interview is going on and still F has not even started askign anything.
M: So only kaam karte ho? nothing else..
Me: Sir actually i have...was about to talk about my hobbies.
M: Chhodo. Ma'am you want to ask anything?
Now her chance,
F: What is Price vs value?
Me: Ma'am price is the cost of the product at which it can be sold for currency, Value can be quantitative as well as qualitative and not always currencyt related (Nothing was coming to me and was numb by now)
M stands and puts a water bottle in front of me, which I chose to ignore. M: are you satisifed by his answer?
F: Somewhat.
Me: (Arre yaar yehi interview kharaab hona tha mera)
F: What exactly you do at job?
Me: Was telling her about my job and my role when i was interrupted by M again. Leave it you have ny questions.
F: Wait. you filled PGP-IM as your second choice. Why second choice you have experience why second then?
Me: The research I did told me the advantages of this course. Experienced guys, multi dimensional experience sharing, small bacth size, international exposure and international internship and working at head quarters of the big companies. My brother who graduated from here told me and his friend who did PGP-IM told the same.
M: What was his name.
Me: Sir we call him Swapnil. Not....
F: So why second choice.
Me: yes ma'am. The only issue for me was the financial aspect of it. I have worked for 30 months and didn't want to put burden on my parents and wanted to take loan to pursue my graduation. But for me both course are equivalent and since it was first and second choices to be filled I filled it like that.
F: So we give you PGP-IM you won't take it?
Me: I would love to take it. It's a risk but a good risk to take. (Should have said something else)
F: Any questions?
Me: What is future scope of PGP-IM as it is about to complete rather completed 10 years last year.
M: Placement chahiye? Nai Chahiye? Seedha poochho.
Me. Sir definitely required. But was asking overall
M: he talked about the course and how it has been doing placement wise (The things written on website)
Me: (I was satnding as he had already told me to leave) Sir one more question why UK course was halted?
M: Some work visa issues and hence we closed it for time being, though in talks.
Now out and send the other guy in.
i just smiled came out, took a big breath and had a silent shout inside me.
My journey ends here. Can't say anything. I guess I can say bye bye to MDI gurgaon. :(

GD and WAT- Should agricultural subsidies be there?WAT- supported agricultural subsidies as it is helping the farmers with land less than 5 hectares( the lower strata) farmer get good quality products at lower prices helping him financially. Also such farmers have huge credit against their names, and subsidies through government channels helps in eliminating the middle man and the huge interest rates associated with the same (middleman way of getting loans). So,financial liberty. Good quality products(seeds, fertilizers, electricty etc) results in produce of high quality at lower price, which means availability of high quality produce at lower prices than as compared to when the farmer would have had to shell out a lot more for the same quality( can mean low quality produce if prices are kept lower without subsidies). Being an agri based economy it makes sense.GD- Spoke the same points and pitched a few negatives such as upper strata farmers availing the benefits they clearly should not be entitled to. Felt wat and gd went decent enough. I felt i emerged among the better members of that GD.
PI- Two ma'ams( one was 35-40ish and the other one was on the older side) Q1- to unsettle me,they said that in my voice there is a certain kind of rhythm/mechanical singing voice?A1- I will take care of it.
Q2- Delved straight into my hobby reading-. So,i said Orwell is my favourite author and his books which i have read. So,what did you like about Animal Farm?A2- told how in early days autocracy seems "the answer" as things are smooth, but later on how power in few hands is dystopia in the making. Q3- So what are your views on Jalikattu?A3- told my views( will not write the exact details since it may offend some people). I was told a lot more about the indigenous bull and why it can be the other way round.*these questions were asked by ma'am in her 30s,and the other ma'am was constantly looking at my grades but didn't ask anything about my acads. Now she started asking *Q4- What do you make of your undergraduation college?A4- Said the unique perspectives about it apart from the acads. *At this point they were all smiling and offered me the dreaded "biscuits/chips". They both said we have asked enough but suddenly the senior panelist started asking again about my hobby-reading*Told them about books of Marquez i read but didnt fully understand(one hundred years of solitude due to its immense depth).Q5- I had mentioned about Fitzgerlad's "The great gatsby". She said i did not find anything worthwhile in that. What was it that you liked?A5- How lonely can it be at the top. Despite being surrounded in a rotten crowd, Gatsby was worth the whole bunch put together. How the aristrocracy had a murky side and so on. Now they started asking me about the newspaper I read. But somehow it got shifted to the fake news helping Trump win. I explained one needs to vet his reading sources before reading. Told her how trump and brexit is not mere racism but neglect alongwith(you can find a lot of anecdotes on quora and the left leaning media is not the end to all anwers). She told me about the way journalism works. I was naive at times( I am 21,who is not) and they were intrigued by my thoughts(it seems),but found a bit of rawness.Q6 Since we have asked so much about reading, tell us one thing we might not be aware of(newspaper/book or something like that)?A6 Spoke about ProPublica( investigative journalism). They were not aware about it and I told them about it.* END *I guess my low percentile and GEM fresher tag is a problem. I spoke what I knew. Share your views if you like. Hope this helps. My application shows Payment details : 2200/- Application completed and Payment Received at Institute. But do we have to pay any other amount of 950Rs for the GD/WAT/PI round. If so please provide the link for the same. Please confirm at the earliest. I have my interviews scheduled tomorrow.
TIll what date will work ex be consider for final selection?
