U would be required to do many group assignments/group discussions hence staying in hostel would be benificial as u could do healthy discussion with most of the group members participating.....
But if u can manage u r schedule staying with u r friend then its fine ....

Some Important Points for the GD-PI (based on the Earlier Process this year):
1. GD was a Case Study and basically your Communication, Analytic Skills and Group Behavior are tested. Listen to the Instructions very carefully. Do wear a watch to be able to time the Discussion. 2 mins to think. 10 mins to discuss. 10 people in a Group.
2. PI differs from Panel to Panel. Some would just concentrate on your SOP while some would ask you about Hobbies and Co-curricular. (Send your SOP printed on an A4 size executive bond paper and make sure you can follow up on any question asked from it. Carry a copy of it to GD/PI too.)
One particular panel at our time was asking basic technical questions too.
So in short prepare yourself for all the important questions- Introduce Yourself, Why MBA?, Academics, Current Affairs, About the City to which you belong/working, Achievements, Strengths, Weakness, Future Goals. The important point here is to have a straight thought process, being aware of yourself and your purpose. Each question is a new question so do not get demoralized if you could not answer a couple. Wise Truth is the way to go. The panel members are very experienced and have been doing this for years so keep this mind when preparing the answers.
