Will the Odd and Even rule help curb Delhi’s pollution levels?

Delhi government’s plan  to curb pollution has created quite an  uproar in the city, as well as the rest of the country. This plan, effective from January 1, allows only those vehicles on the street, according to their license numbers being odd or even, on alternative days only. The imposed rule has forced daily passengers to prefer the Metro over other means of transport. Delhi Metro, which was expected  to accommodate 20% more people than usual is running at peak frequency.

The effectiveness of the plan has already been echoed in various other cities. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is planning to approach a similar but advanced method to lower the number of vehicles on the road. According to the AMC, imposing such rules has its own demerits. If implemented in the long term, the fact that rich people will prefer to keep two cars can’t be overlooked. Such steps won’t fulfil the motive of the whole idea – to reduce pollution. Curbing a large number of vehicles will definitely increase pressure on the public transport systems. For a commoner, it is difficult to assure a safe and sound journey without establishing advanced transport system.

The government can’t stop people from registering new vehicles every day. Therefore, this implementation can simply be a step forward – to motivate people to use public transportation, in order to reduce traffic and pollution. However, to make the implementation people-friendly, the government still needs to take some additional steps. Merging people’s consent and motivation along with factual evidence only can make implementation of rules.
