The Call

The bell rang and decimated her wait at once. She got up hurriedly to open the gate. Rajiv was now standing in front of her.

I kept my promise,” said Rajiv with his unique half-smile.

The evening was same, so were the two people who had been living together under the same roof for last 15 years. But they knew that everything wouldn’t be same after that day. Now they were officially divorced but before parting out they wanted to spend some time together… for the one last time.

Rajiv literally kept his promise unlike before. He was on time, sitting beside her on the sofa and sharing about everything he couldn’t have been able to.

Dinner?” asked Shruti after a while.

I would prefer taking a bath first,” replied Rajiv.

Sure,” said Shruti.

5 minutes later

Shruti’s phone rang.

Hello

Hello, do you know Rajiv?” asked a man on other side of the phone.

Yes, he is my…,” Shruti stopped for a few seconds and then continued, “husband. Who are you?”

A silence was insinuating something was wrong.

I am constable Hari Mohan. A man got hit by a truck on Bypass road. He died. We found his company’s identity card that says he was Rajiv Sharma and we found your number from his cellphone,” said the man continuing, “I am sorry for your lo…

Shruti’s phone slipped from her hands before the man could finish. A graveyard silence prevailed. The noise of shower, which had been coming out from the bathroom, stopped. She was sobbing and shivering. All thoughts that were running wildly in her mind were suffocating her.

She got terrified by the sound of click. She ran towards the kitchen and the sound of opening of door of the bathroom followed her.

I am all set for our dinner Shruti. Where are you?” asked Rajiv. Shruti could hear his each footstep he was taking.

‘I kept my promise…I kept my promise…’

These words of Rajiv were reverberating in her mind.

You know what happened with me this evening,” Rajiv said, “Someone snatched my bag while I was on the bus, jumped out of the running bus and ran away. I wanted to file a F.I.R. but I had to keep my promise… by reaching here at the right time so I didn’t file any.”

Shruti came out of the kitchen. Her eyes were still filled with tears.

What happened? I have just lost my bag,” grinned Rajiv.

Shruti ran and hugged him.

Where’s your cellphone?” she asked while her hands still wrapped around his chest.

Rajiv was surprised with this sudden turn of events but he replied anyways, “Well, it was raining and I kept it in my bag. Why are you asking that?”

Shruti didn’t say a word.
