SSC CGL Tier II 2014 Exam – How to prepare, likely cut-off and important tips

SSC

SSC’s CGL is the gateway to a large number of very lucrative jobs in various ministries and departments of the Indian government. No wonder, it is one of the most important competitive examinations in India today.

The SSC CGL Tier II 2014 Exam was scheduled for 24th and 25th January. However, as per SSC’s latest notification, this exam has been postponed. SSC has declared that they would announce the fresh dates shortly.

In such a situation, it is natural for students to be worried and concerned. However, the smarter thing to do would be to focus on your preparation and ensure that you use this extra time to get an edge over your competition.

Paper Pattern and Tier II cut-off:

Before we try to estimate the likely cut-off of Tier II 2014, let us take a quick glance at the pattern of this examination.

SSC CGL Tier II Exam consists of two papers – one on Quantitative Abilities (Paper I) and one on English Language & Comprehension (Paper II) – for all posts except those of Statistical Investigator Grade II and of Compiler. For candidates interested in the post of Statistical Investigator and in the post of Compiler, there is one additional paper on Statistics (Paper III). All three papers are worth 200 marks each. Paper II has 200 questions, with 1 mark for every correct answer and 0.25 negative marks for every wrong answer. Paper I and III have 100 questions each, with 2 marks for every right answer and 0.5 negative marks for every wrong answer.

Additionally, some posts also require eligible candidates to appear for an Interview and/or a Skill Test.

Likely cut-off:

For SSC CGL 2013, as per SSC’s notification dated 31st October, 2014, the cut-offs for all interview posts (apart from the posts of Statistical Investigator and of Compiler) were – General category (420 marks), OBC (391 marks), SC (353.25 marks) and ST (340.75 marks). Do note that these marks are marks scored out of 600 marks – 200 marks of Tier I and 200 marks each of Tier II Paper I and Paper II.

In the same exam, the cut-offs for the post of Tax Assistant were – General category (393 marks), OBC (359 marks), SC (323.75 marks) and ST (301 marks). These marks are marks scored out of 600 marks – 200 marks of Tier I and 200 marks each of Tier II Paper I and Paper II.

Finally, for the same exam, the cut-offs for the posts of Statistical Investigator and of Compiler were – General category (434.50 marks), OBC (402.50 marks), SC (352 marks) and ST (310.50 marks). Do note that these are marks scored out of 800 marks – 200 marks of Tier I and 200 marks each of Tier II Paper I, Paper II and Paper III.

Your target

For SSC CGL 2014 Exam, it is likely that the cut-offs will not vary drastically from the 2013 exam’s cut-offs. So, keeping in mind the 2013 figures, and assuming that a candidate has scored around 120 marks in Tier I (out of 200 marks), a general category candidate should target around 300+ marks in Tier II (out of the 400 marks of Paper I + Paper II) for all interview posts ((apart from the posts of Statistical Investigator and of Compiler). Similarly, candidates interested in other posts may calculate their target based on the figures given above. This calculation will help you prepare a proper plan for your Tier II exam.

The next step

Once you have identified your target, attempt some Mock Tests or attempt some past years’ Tier II papers. Check your answers and calculate your scores. Analyse your performance in these tests thoroughly and identify those topics where you need more revision and/or more practice. Work hard on those areas so that you become equally strong across all areas/topics. This will be of immense help to you and will help you improve your performance dramatically.
