NITD Academics at standstill, students continue to protest

Today,
November 26, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) officials completed
their visit to National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (NITD). They have collected
evidence regarding the condition of hostels and other infrastructural problems that
students face on campus. On their part, students have submitted documentation
proving their points to the officials.

Students
have repeatedly demanded the resignation of the director, Dr. Tarkeshwar Kumar,
since the protests started a week ago, after Prosenjit Sarkar, a fourth year
student, died on campus. As placement season at NITD is on, the administration
wants to resume academic activities as soon as possible. The institute is at a
standstill with no activities going on since students are refusing to relent
until their demands are met.

The outcome
of these activities depends only on what action is taken by the MHRD after the
visiting officials submit their report. The report to be submitted to the MHRD
by a committee of doctors convened to probe the allegations of medical
negligence in Prosenjit’s case is also awaited, as is the report on the
post-mortem carried out.

PaGaLGuY
will continue to report on this incident and keep the readers updated about the
same.
