Movie Review: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the sequel of 2011’s,also a production of marvel Studios, Captain America: The First Avenger. Need I write more about it? If you still haven’t made up your mind to watch this movie let me tell you what is on offer here. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is what happens to Chris Rogers after the legendary movie The Avengers. It is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and scripted by Christopher Markus and Stephen Mcfeely, the same duo who brought you its first installment.

Movie stars the usual suspects (Click on the actors’ name to view there full profile on IMDB):

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow/ Natasha Romanoff

Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barns

Cobie Smulders as Marie Hill

And

Samuel. L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

So, what is so special about this yet another superhero movie that it has managed to score 8.2/10 of IMDB and 89% on Rotten Tomatoes? Let’s have a look.

The story picks up after a gap of two years from the Battle of New York where Captain America is employed by an intelligence agency called S.H.I.E.L.D. And as apart from Tony Stark no superheroes make an entry from a bed scene, Captain, here, is introduced by a petty mission. This mission also introduces Black Widow and her new straight hairstyle. But then suddenly this pair finds itself midst of trust issues and unknown mystery killers which basically is a trademark of all superhero movies. But it would be unfair to call it a cliché just yet. This story picks up pace when Nick fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D, is ambushed by a group of masked assassins and dies in the aftermath of it. Now Captain America takes it upon himself to avenge Fury’s death but he has no one left to trust within his circle. I don’t wish to reveal the plot any further than I already have as after-all this is supposed to be a thriller. But I am sure 90 % of you will be able to guess it beforehand.

Coming to the part of character development, in my opinion, the writer duo has done a commendable job. They still want Steve Rogers to believe that he doesn’t belong to 21st century which at times presents him as a freelancer and gives him the freedom his character needs. They have also successfully managed to tone down the negative image of Back Widow that was built up in The Avengers which gives you all the more reasons to love her apart from her pretty looks and engrossing voice. Also, there are a few new characters, as aides to Captain, have been introduced such as Falcon played by Anthony Mackie who brings more firepower to the artillery.

My only complaint is related to the character of Marie Hill played by Cobie Smulders ( Superstar from the serial” How I met your mother”). I think her role has been intentionally underplayed in this movie for the reasons best known to writers. They even go on to introduce another female agent to fight beside Captain.

For a change the background score is refreshing and different from other previous marvel installments. Action scenes stand justified within the abilities of superhuman Steve Rogers (No Rohit Shetty stuff) and are a treat to watch. Though this movie seriously lacks the charm-a shade of comic punches that its predecessors had, but you really can’t hold it against the leading pair of Captain and Widow- they act with straight faces.

All in all, it is a fun movie to watch. Watch it for Avengers or watch it for Scarlett Johansson or watch it for a small mention of Tony Stark; whatever may the reason be, you need to watch it as more good stuff is coming. Yes, there will be another movie in this series. And one more thing, please don’t skip the credits, they may have something interesting for you!

Movie Rating: ****1/2 out of 5
