Overview
Established in 1875, Doshisha University is widely recognized as one of Japans leading comprehensive universities, with a distinguished history of education based on founder Joseph Hardy Neesimas philosophy of education guided by conscience. Doshisha is one of the top four prestigious private universities in the Kansai (Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto) region, and is one of 13 universities selected by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology for the Global 30 Project for Establishing Core Universities for Internationalization. Doshishas Global MBA is a flagship program for the universitys Global 30 participation.
Doshishas location in Kansai places it in the industrial heart of Japan. The Kansai region boasts the largest number of manufacturers in Japan and numerous R&D; centers and high-tech science parks, and provides access to companies in both traditional industries and modern ones (including Panasonic, Nintendo, Kyocera, Omron, P&G; Japan). Kyoto itself is one of the worlds most interesting and culturally rich cities, with 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, various artistic and spiritual pursuits, a safe and fun night life, and much more.
With a motto of Not Business As Usual, the Doshishas Global MBA provides a solid foundation of business knowledge plus several distinctive features that prepare students to thrive in the business world of the 21st century. These include an emphasis on social responsibility and sustainability, unique and innovative focus areas, small classes and a friendly atmosphere, and an experiential approach that opens the doors to career opportunities in Japan and abroad.
Culture and Creativity: Where MBA meets Japanese Pop Culture
Starting this spring the Doshisha Global MBA has added, to Business in Asia and Green Business, a unique third specialization area called Culture and Creativity, which includes a focus on the business side of Japanese pop culture. Heading the Culture and Creativity stream is Professor Tim Craig, who joins the Global MBA faculty after 16 years at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at University of Victoria in Canada.
Professor Craig, who besides teaching and doing research on business management has published two books on Asian popular culture, explains the rationale behind the new specialization.
The cultural and creative industries including manga and anime, music, video games, film and TV, visual arts, fashion, and cultural tourism are extremely important economically. They account for as much as 7% of world GDP. And of course Japanese pop culture is not only big business, its also a large part of Japans international brand. People all over the world have grown up with Hello Kitty and Dragon Ball and Final Fantasy and Harajuku and One Piece and SMAP. And now AKB48. I was in Italy recently and the one Japanese word that everybody seemed to know was kawaii.
Japanese pop culture is also an important source of soft power, which helps bring the world together. This resonates with Doshisha Universitys traditional emphasis on education guided by conscience and Japans reputation as a nation that practices and promotes peace.
The Culture and Creativity stream includes courses on cultural and creative industries, the business of Japanese pop culture, creativity and innovation, cultural tourism, and fashion. Craig says: Its a good option for those who are interested in working in one of these industries, or for anybody who wants to get an edge in managing innovation or being more creative themselves. Plus, its fun.
