The First Engineering College, Roorkee established in 1847 AD in the British Empire. In 21st September 2001, it was renamed the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. IIT Roorkee is situated in the picturesque foothills of the Himalayas, in the state of Uttarakhand. The Institute has completed 150th year of its existence in October 1996.

The Institute has two campuses. The main campus is at Roorkee in Uttarakhand and the other one is 50 km away at Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. The campus at Roorkee is spread over 356 acres of landscaped lush greenery. Nestled within this are several heritage buildings, modern academic departments, nineteen hostels, messes, hospital, school, banks, community centres, indoor and outdoor sports facilities which include three sports stadiums, a modern swimming pool, dairy, students’ clubs and several activity centres and other buildings. All hostels are now fully Wifi connected. The Department of Paper Technology is located in a 25 acre campus at Saharanpur. A 10 acre campus is being developed as an extension centre at Greater Noida.

Academic Programs at IITR

The Institute offers B.Tech Degree courses in 10 disciplines. The Institute has facility for doctoral work in all Departments and Research Centres. The Institute admits students to B.Tech. and B.Arch. courses through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at various centres all over India.

Each academic year is divided into two semesters and the programme is organized around the credit system. Teaching includes lectures, tutorials, practicals, projects, seminars, dissertations and field & industrial training.

Extra-curricular life at IITR

Cognizance
is the annual technical festival organized by IITR while Thomso is
the Cultural festival. The hobby club facilitates activities like
photography, philately, astronomy, fine arts, gardening, web design, etc. It
hosts SRISHTI, an annual techno-hobby exhibition. IIT Roorkee
Motorsports is the official Formula Student team of IIT Roorkee. The team
designed and developed a formula style race car and represented India in the
international competition Formula SAE Australasia in December 2011, held in
Melbourne, Australia. This was the first Indian team to finish the endurance
event of the competition and also finished first in fuel efficiency.  IITR has adopted five villages under the ‘Unnat
Bharat Abhiyan’ scheme, launched by the ministry of human resource development.
The aim of this scheme is to give a tech-boost at the grassroot level to these
villages.

IITR Rankings            

IITR is
placed at rank 461 in the World University Rankings in 2014/15. It holds rank
101 in the University Subject Rankings 2014/15.  It stands at Rank 37 in the BRICS Rankings
2014/15. It holds rank 70 in Asian University Rankings 2014/15.
