IIT Placements begin, reports start coming in of high placements and blacklisted companies

With IIT Placements hot on the discussion radar, information
about them keeps coming on in spurts. While the actual processes will start in
a day or two, some reports have already come in, especially as other technical
institutes have already started their processes. Abhishek Pant, a Pune resident
and IIT-Kgp student, became the first celebrity of this season after landing a Rs. 2 crore package at Google.

However, as it turns out, Abhishek’s details had not been
released by the IIT Kgp placement cell, but by his family. The actual
package is much lower than quoted. In order to reduce such miscommunication,
the All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC) has taken an informal decision to not release compensation figures at all this placement season.

Meanwhile, the IITs are blowing hot & cold regarding the
most favoured day zero placement slots when the best companies get to pick the
best students.

IIT Bombay, upon requests by the Govt. of India to favour
core engineering companies, has decided to favour manufacturing recruiters over non-core companies like consulting companies.

At the same time, companies like Zomato and Directi are
finding themselves blacklisted from hiring at the country’s premier engineering institutes. Zomato found
itself blacklisted after a Twitter outburst by its founder Deepinder Goyal against
the IIT placement process.

The placement process is the most awaited discussion topic around
India’s engineering institutes. While some decry the very idea of putting high payment
packages on a podium, others feel that there has to be a lot more balance in
how these processes are reported on. The AIPC decision to not reveal
compensation numbers is a welcome step on this road. What do you think? Let us
know in the comments.
