GK Update – Padma Awardees 2016

The Indian honourary awards have recently
been in the news and could be important for your exams.

The 2016 Padma Awards were recently
announced on the 67th Republic Day. They are given in various fields
– art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and
industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service. In this
article, we will look at a brief background and the list of awardees.

Background

·
The Indian honourary system is
broadly categorised into five domains – Leadership, Literature, Civilian,
Patriotic and Particular.

·
The Awards are given in three
categories – Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

·
Padma Vibhushan is awarded for
exceptional and distinguished service.

·
Padma Bhushan is given for service
of high order.

·
Padma Shri is awarded for
distinguished service in any field.

·
This year, the President of
India has approved the conferment of the Awards to 112 persons. Among these, 10
are Padma Vibhushan, 19 are Padma Bhushan and 83 are Padma Shri.

·
There are 19 women in the list,
and 10 persons in the category of foreigners, NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin
(PIOs).
