GIM Student Speak: My Journey From a Nurse to BD Manager at a Leading IT Firm

Shirley Vaz started a career in the Healthcare sector as a nurse in Wockhardt Hospital. Her zeal to grow in the space made her opt the PGDM-Healthcare Management Programme at GIM. Two years of hard work and optimal use of opportunities has culminated in a successful placement with an IT giant.

“Since I was interested in Biology, I decided to pursue my B.Sc. in Nursing at the Institute Of Nursing Education, Bambolim Goa. Thereafter, I worked as a nurse in Wockhardt Hospital for a year and half and got a sound understanding of the clinical functioning and operations of a typical Corporate Hospital. I then joined a Public Health set up and served that organisation for 2 years. There I gained insights on the day to day functioning as well as the various collaborations of the organisation.

A significant level of experience and proficiency in nursing, coupled with introspection, made me understand my potential of building a career in the healthcare industry. To equip myself with advanced entrepreneurial skills, expertise, competence and integrity, I decided to pursue my MBA in healthcare management at GIM.

The two year journey at GIM was an extremely fulfilling one as it was instrumental in helping me realize my career goals and aspirations. It offered me a plethora of learning opportunities across the wide spectrum of the healthcare industry. The well-designed curriculum helped me to build on my knowledge base. The unique feature of Healthcare Management programme at GIM is the industrial visits which gave me a flavour of the different sub-sectors under the umbrella of the healthcare industry. In addition, the two months summer internship gave me a hands on experience of the current trends and functioning of the healthcare industry.

GIM has further widened my horizons by offering me a stage to showcase my talents, by participating in various events and national level competitions. GIM has also groomed me with respect to corporate etiquettes and ethics.

I now feel confident to take up the challenging role of a Business Development Manager at one of the prominent IT giants of India.”
