Engineering students file online petition against JNTU Hyderabad over ‘faulty’ evaluation

Engineering students in Telangana are agitated over ‘faulty’ evaluation by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad as an online petition filed by the students has gathered over 6,900 supporters in a period of three days.

The university declared the first semester examination results on February 7, following which thousands of students have raised objections over the way the answer sheets have been corrected.

Many students claim that they failed the examination despite attempting several questions in detail. “I am an above average student as I secured aggregate of 86 percent in diploma. However, corrections made by JNTU reveals that I have failed in all subjects apart from two laboratory examinations,” said Venkat, an engineering student who started a debate on social media platform, gathering immense support from fellow students. Many students have also changed their profile pictures stating ‘I am against JNTU correction’.

Even in the online petition, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of JNTU Hyderabad, Venugopal Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister of Telangana, Kadiyam Srihari, and Minister of Information Technology, KT Rama Rao, an ‘anonymous JNTUH victim’, has explained how he got only 16 marks despite attempting questions of 60 marks.

Students also claim that the university makes a lot of money through re-evaluation and hence gives less marks to students. “The university doesn’t care about our marks. It mints money in the name of re-evaluation and supplementary examination fee,” said Venkatesh Gotte, a Computer Science student of the Sri Chaitanya College of Engineering.

Agitated students of the Keshav Memorial Institute of Technology (KMIT) and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology,  (MGIT) Hyderabad held protests on February 10, in their college premises demanding efficiency in the evaluation process.

More than 500 students gathered at KMIT’s football ground and raised slogans of ‘we want justice’. Taking the protest forward, few students are also planning to hold a massive rally in the next few days in Hyderabad to make their voices heard.

When contacted N Yadaiah, RRegistrar of JNTU, Hyderabad, he said – “The percentage of such students complaining about the evaluation process is meager. We have taken every step to make the evaluation process efficient. Even the faculty members are chosen by the college managements themselves. However, if we get official complaints from students, we will look into the same.”
