1. The Union Government launches Jal Kranti Abhiyaan 

(i) The Union Minister of Water Resources Uma Bharti launched a, ‘Jal Kranti Abhiyan’ from Jaipur,  Rajasthan aimed at turning one water stressed village in each district of the country into a water surplus village. 

(ii) As per the campaign a village with water scarcity will be identified as ‘Jal Gram’ on a pilot project and a comprehensive integrated development plan will be framed for several water conservation activities. For the pilot project, 672 districts have been selected in the country by the ministry. 

(iii) The activities proposed for Jal Gram include, rain water harvesting, recycling of waste water, micro irrigation for water use efficiency and mass awareness program.

2. The Centre orders nine variants of Nestle Maggie to be withdrawn from the market

(i) After receiving the food analysis reports from all the states and the central Food Safety Authority of India (FSAI) the Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda announced that the government has taken the decision to withdraw nine approved variants of Maggi brand from the market.

(ii) The Health Ministry confirmed that Nestle had flouted safety guidelines set in India.

(iii) In addition, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) also said that Nestle India recently launched Maggi Oats Noodles without the approval of the concerned authorities.

3. South Korea reports fifth death from MERS

(i) The Government of South Korea has vowed all- out measures to ease the public fear over the largest outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome(MERS) outside Saudi Arabia.

(ii) The number MERS infected cases swelled to 68 after the reports  of 14 new cases were reported. 

(iii)The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is the virus that causes the respiratory illness known as MERS, there is no known cure to this infection yet. The virus was first detected in camels in several countries. The first reports of humans having contracted the MERS-CoV virus emerged in 2012 in Saudi Arabia.

4. The Union Government appoints CVC and CIC 

(i) President Pranab Mukherjee approved the appointment of K Choudhary to the Office of Central Vigilance Commissioner(CVC) and Vijay Sharma to the office of Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).

(ii) These two key posts had been lying vacant for almost a year.

(iii) The Government has for the first time broken away with the tradition of appointing an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer as the Central Vigilance Commissioner. A K Chowdary is a former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) Officer, he retired as Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

5. Federal Bank slashes base rate by 0.25 per cent

(i)  Federal Bank cut the base rate or the minimum lending rate by 0.25 per cent  making it 9.25 %

(ii) The new base rate will come in effect from 18th June, 2015.

(iii) A number of banks, including largest public sector lender SBI have cut lending rates keeping in mind RBI’s second bi – monthly policy review for 2015 -16 in early June.

6. Barcelona crowned as European Champions for the fifth time

(i)Barcelona made history on Saturday, after winning the club’s fifth UEFA Champions   League title and completed an unprecedented second treble with an excellent 3-1 victory.

(ii) Luis Suarez and Neymar scored second-half goals to give Barcelona a 3-1 Champions League final victory over Juventus as the Spaniards became the first team to twice win the European treble.

7. Tintu Luka wins Gold – India finishes third at the Asian Athletics Championship

(i) Tintu Luka bagged her maiden gold  by winning the women’s 800m finals as India finished with five medals on the final day of competitions at the 21st Asian Athletics Championships. 

(ii) India finished third with 4 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze in the championships behind China, Qatar and Japan. 

(iii)This was the second best finish for India after 2007 Amman, Jordan.
