1. Union Cabinet clears proposal for setting up National Memorial for Jai Prakash Narayan 

(i) A day before the 40th anniversary of Emergency, government on Wednesday gave its approval   for building  a  national memorial in the memory of Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash Narayan at his birthplace Bihar.

(ii) The memorial is to house a virtual museum and an institute to undertake study and research on democracy, enhancing the role of panchayats in nation-building, Gandhian thoughts and centre for Khadi and constructive work. 

2. Union Cabinet approves of setting six Indian Institutes of Management (IIM)

(i) The Union Cabinet on 24th June 2015 approved of six new Indian Institutes of Management    (IIM’s) in the country, the cabinet meeting was chaired by Prime Minster Narendra Modi.

(ii) These new IIMs will be located at Sambalpur (Odisha), Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh) and Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Amritsar (Punjab), Bodh Gaya (Bihar), Nagpur (Maharashtra).

(iii) These IIMs are intended to commence their first academic session from 2015-16. Each Institute will start with an intake of 140 students in the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) courses.

3. Veteran journalist and Peace Activist Praful Bidwai passed away

(i) Veteran Journalist Praful Patel passed away in Amsterdam, Netherlands at 65, on Tuesday.

(ii) Patel had worked in, The Times of India as a Senior Assistant Editor, he also wrote a regular column for Frontline and Hindustan Times for several years. In addition, he regularly contributed to magazines and newspapers published in India and around the world. 

(iii) He also authored several books, including South Asia on a Short Fuse: Nuclear Politics and the Future of Global Disarmament (1999), New Nukes: India, Pakistan and Global Nuclear Disarmament (co-authored with Achin Vanaik in 2002) and the Politics of Climate Change and Global Crisis: Mortgaging Our Future (2012).

4. Sahitya Akademi announces Bal Sahitya Puraskar for the year 2015 

(i) The Sahitya Akademi on 24th June 2015 announced the Bal Sahitya Puraskar for the year 2015.

(ii) The award was conferred on five novelist, four writers of short stories and three authors of poetries, one book on one act play and eleven writers for their contribution to Children’s Literature.

(iii) The awardee books were published between 2009 – 2013 and the award will be presented to the   receipts on 14th November 2015. List of the Award recipients includes 

In Novel section: 

(a) Tiren Boro (Bodo)

(b) Sowmya Rajendran, Niveditha Subramaniam (English), 

(c) Ramnath G Gawade (Konkani), 

(d) Ramdeo Jha (Maithili) and 

(e) Mukti Upadhyay ‘Baral’ (Nepali) 

In Short Story section: 

(a) Nayeem Kashmiri (Kashmiri), 

(b) Thockchom Thouyangba Meitei (Manipuri), 

(c) Krishna Kumar ‘Ashu’ (Rajasthani) 

(d) Janardan Hegde (Sanskrit)

In Poetry section:

(a) Tara Chand Kalandri (Dogri)

(b) Srikanta Saren (Santali) 

(c) Sella Ganpathi (Tamil)

(d) Bano Sartaj (Urdu)

Contribution To Children Literature section:

(a) Eli Ahmed (Assamese)

(b) Kartik Ghose (Bengali)

(c) Dhiruben Patel (Gujarati)

(d) T S Nagraja Shetty (Kannada)

5.  India ranks 143rd on a Global Peace Index

(i) A research firm based in Australia has ranked India 143rd out of the 162 nations listed in the Global Peace Index.

(ii) The index indicated that India’s ranking has fallen by 6% in the ranking in the last eight years due to the deteriorating indicators measuring deaths from external conflict, political terror and perception of criminality. 

(iii) The Economic impact borne by India in containing the consequences of violence has cost Indian Economy an estimated $341.7 billion in 2014.
