1. Mary Kom named as Brand Ambassador for the
North East

i. The
government of India has appointed world boxing champion Mary Kom as a Brand
Ambassador for the North East states.

ii. The name of Mary Kom has been selected for
the promotion of culture and tourism in the North East states of India.

iii. Minister of Development of North Eastern
Region Jitendra Singh announced this at a two-day business summit in New Delhi.

2. Narayan Desai, Noted Gandhian passed away

i. Noted
Gandhian and Narayan Desai was passed away today in Tapi district of South
Gujarat. He was 90 years old.

ii. He was the son of Mahadev Desai who was the personal
secretary of Mahatma Gandhi.

iii. Narayan Desai was accorded many awards
including Jamnalal Bajaj Award in 1999, UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize and
Moortidevi Award In 2004.

iv. He also got Sahitya Akademi Award in 1993
for his book on biography of his father Mahadev Desai and Ranjitram Suwarna
Chandrak – the highest award for Gujarati literature in 2001.

3. FM Arun Jaitely unveils
Gandhi statue in London

i. Union
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley unveiled the long-awaited statue of Mahatma
Gandhi on Saturday.

ii. The
nine-foot bronze statue of Gandhi was created by Phillip Jackson, a renowned
British sculptor, and will stand in the company of Nelson Mandela, Winston
Churchill, and Abraham Lincoln, among others.

iii. On the occasion
British Prime Minister David Cameron, Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi,
British Culture Minister Sajid Javid, Amitabh Bachchan, and Lord and Lady
Desai, founding trustees of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust were also present.

4. Apurva, a new calf cloned by National Dairy Research Institute

i. National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) have
cloned a female calf using cells (somatic cells )from the buffalo’s urine.

ii. This is probably first case in the world
across the species, in which somatic cells has been isolated from urine and
cloned calf has been produced.

iii. The calf named
Apurva and it is the tenth cloned calf in the NDRI, since the institute
produced world’s first cloned buffalo calf in 2009. Three of the 10 cloned
calves had died.

iv. Apurva was born
by normal parturition or delivery, and its weight at the time was around 37 kg.
