BITS Pilani, (Birla Institute of Technology & Science)

The Birla Institute of
Technology & Science, commonly known as BITS Pilani, is an all-India Institute for higher education. BITS Pilani is located in the Vidya
Vihar campus adjacent to the town of Pilani in Rajasthan. Pilani, the home town
of the Birla family, is about 200 km west of Delhi and 220 km north of Jaipur. It
was started by Seth ShivNarainji Birla in the early 1900s as a small school
which later grew into a set of colleges for higher education, ranging from the
Humanities to Engineering. In 1964, these colleges came together in the form of
a deemed university. This deemed university was christened the Birla Institute
of Technology and Science, Pilani, known to many as BITS, Pilani. The Institute’s
buildings, hostels and residential quarters for staff with neatly laid out
roads, lawns and gardens are found on a 990 acre campus. The institute has
eleven hostels for men and one for women.

Academic Programs at BITS Pilani

Admission to the Integrated First Degree
Programmes of BITS Pilani Campuses in Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad is through BITSAT which is a computer based online test. The admission is open to all
based on BITSAT rank and follows no reservation policy. State toppers with PCM
or PCB are automatically given seats.

BITS offers degrees like B.E. (Hons.),
B.Pharm. (Hons.), M.M.S (Master of Management Studies), M.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc.
(Tech.), and M.A. (Hons.). The institute’s flexible academic policy allows
students to complete their degree earlier or later than the standard 8
semesters.

Extra-curricular activities

APOGEE is the annual technical festival and is usually held
in March. Oasis is the annual cultural festival held at the Pilani
campus. Junoon is the two day sports meet
held annually. The Creative Activities Club (CrAC), Photog, BITS Radio-Control
(RC) Club, BITSMUN Society, Mind And Thought For Radical Information EXchange
(MATRIX) are a few of the many clubs on campus.

Placement
details

BITS follows a two phase placement season.
Placements happen from August to November and from January to April. Most
companies visit the campus twice for placements. Nearly 500 students from
the Pilani campus sit for placements every semester and almost 100% succeed in
securing a job.
