Puys,

No GD/PI experience posted yet??? Please post your experiences of the day...

Hi Puys,
Here I am posting my Gd-PI experience.
I was at 9 o clock slot at IIM Bangalore
Reached there by 7.45 .Registration process began around 8.30.
Just you had to bring two photos ,5 copies of Distinct achivements.
Also take the profile sheet but it is only required for those who had sent multiple ones & Spjain did not receive the final one.
SPjain students are asking us to verify the profile sheet they had with them.
Close to 40 people were there for the slot.
Total 6 panels A to F
I was for panel E. Number of applicants in each panel ranged from 6 to 8.
For other panels GI started at 9 o clock sharp .
But our panel were late due to delayed flight.
It started around 9.40 a.m.

Guy 6 :Finance
Time: 40 mins
Immediately when we sat M1 and M2 apologized for the delay.
Then M1 : You will start with a informal discussion between yourselves.
We realized we have to start with a GD .You have 1 minute to think
GD Topic: Impact of Nano
Very calm GD .I think people were thinking about their introduction.Lot of points came out . Spoke thrice but valid points. After 10 or 12 mins Gd was stopped .
Brief Snapshot of Discussion:
Questions:
M2 : Ok thank you
M1:Introduce yourself in 2 mins.
Everybody spoke about them their work schooling and hobbies. In general I felt panel stopped us if it was going above 1.5 mins.
Guy 1 was stopped in between.
After introduction we were questions
S1 to guy1: You said you have in media and currently doing some high profile job in television channel. Why dou you want to do MBA
Guy1: Higher platform,Better networking.....
M1 to me: You said you are associated with you are associated with your family based NGO.Please elaborate.
Me:Told as a trustee I have to decide on all financial decisions and without my consent no important financial purchase can be done
Also designing website for the NGO.

What is your vision with respect to your NGO
Me:Blah Blah(Seemed satisfied)
M2 to guy3:Why MBA
Guy3: Father was from army background and stayed in different parts of the country .Tried to relate MBA with that Grilled .Panel seemed convinced
S1 to guy4: Once again why mba
Guy4:Not convincing answer at all
M1to Guy5: Why MBA and what is the latest event that you have captured in newspaper.
Guy5:Told he was a big cricket fan and so was only interested about cricket.
M1:Asked him about IPL moving out .
Guy5: had no idea IPL was moving out.
M1:Asked him about his views in IPL
S1 to Guy5:Asked about his work
M2 to Lady6:
Once again gilled about work and was exclusively asked why mba in finance
Lady6: Was working in telemetry and tried to relate her background with finance .(Grilled for sometime on that)
S1 to Guy4:Your work profile

Thats it man .Over and for me only 1 question other than introduction. That too about NGO (What the hell!!)

Results came out in 10 mins: 5 out of 6 were selected.Only guy4 was rejected. My guess is that he did not had a convincing answer for Why MBA
and did not express proper clarity of thought during GD.Also he looked sometimes at the panel member during GD.
ROUND 2

We had to wait for another 15 mins and was called for next round

GI-2:
Number of Ppl present: 8 people including guy1 and lady6 from 1st round(3 finance ,3 marketing ,1 OM and 2 IM)
Panel Members Intro:2 professors S1(around 40 ) and S2(very old). Was just assessing us throughout the interview
Time: 50 mins
Brief Discussion:
S1 :
Introduce yourselves
Man everybody was talking about their achievements ,prizes and the professors were greatly appreciating it.I was the last one told about my work and NGO and my hobby. No reaction from them.but S1 asked to me a lot of qustions with respect to work during that time only
S1:How do you prepare for the interview once you get a call
Everyone was asked with their opinion.
Told about extensive research in pagalguy and tried to correlate my values with institute .Was happy with my answer
S1:Now We will begin with formal GI(!!!!What was before that)
S1 asked each of us 3 questions one by one and asked for our extensive opinion and also cross questioned us
Q1:What do you think of religion
Q2:What is most important event happening across the globe
Q3: What is the distinction between consumer and contributor.

Each of us were cross questioned accroding to our answers.
Please take care that you give a relevant answer.
For E.g. For question2 the OM guy told degeneration of western literature was the most important thing current happening across the globe.(What the hell. They professor just murdered him on that)
Also for Q1:Don't try to be to melodramatic telling you are agnostic or atheist .Tell something which normal human being does.
That,s it S1 was done He asked S2 whether he wanted to ask questions.
S2 asked 3 specific questions to 3 of us.
two guys including me and the lady.
I was asked with respect to the values that I have written in my form.

That's it.
Done
After that another 1 and half hour wait for document verification.
They were calling 1 by 1 to those people who had cleared round 1 and completed GI2.

Was left with a mixed feeling
what's your take puys

Cheers

Hi puys,

Did they ask about the 5 points bit? They want it written or printed?
any idea on the size of paper they are talking about?
if printed what are the font details?

Can anybody tell me wat is this GITA course in SPJIMR ????

Hi Fellow puys

How about the Statement which wants 5 lines each on accomplishments, versatility, academics, experience, major experience faced in life, family background etc.

So its just one line each touching upon the above mentioned aspects?

My Statement sounds a bit over the top but if it has to be a liner it has to be pithy ? Please guide me on this..

Hi all,
GI details
Date: 22nd Mar
Time: 1:00 PM
Venue: IIM B
Doc verification 1:
We were asked to give 2 photographs (with name and interview ID written behind them), and 3 copies of 5 distinct lines about you. Nobody validates this sheet, so I guess there are no hard & fast rules as to what goes in this sheet. Seniors told that it was basically to help the panel get a snapshot of you.
GI 1:
It was a chilled-out GI. 45 minutes but time really flew!
Three member panel two faculties (one maam, one sir) and one first year student of SP
The panel took some issues, and asked each of our views about it.
Some of the things discussed were,
-Tell us two things not in your profile sheet
-Views on leadership
-IPL
-Jaago-Re campaign
-TV soaps
-How would you contribute to society
-How would you help your peers, juniors, etc
5 out of 6 ppl were selected for the second GI.
GI 2:
Same format. Again, it was chilled-out. Again around 45 minutes. 8 ppl attended the GI.
Two member panel one faculty, other one I am not sure but he never spoke; the faculty was asking all the questions
Things discusses were,
-Difference between your city and Blore
-Lifestyle change in blore, for good or for bad?
-Nobody has time now for activities true or just an excuse?
-Is election a futile exercise?
-Views on Indo-US Nuke deal
Doc verification 2:
Here they check your CAT scorecard, X, XII, Grad mark sheets pretty cumbersome process
No psychometric test from this year!!
No tell me about yourselves, no why MBA, no why SP Jain, no why specialization, etc.I am not sure if they were asked on other panels.
Most of it was about your views on issues content could be added, but each of us was allowed to talk only a couple of minutes during our turns, so it helps to be concise and effective without dragging too much.
Most ppl were selected from the first GI only ppl with slightly poor communication or nervousness were left out of the second GI.
Panel makes you feel very comfortable. Be natural. Try to bring new dimensions to the topic under discussion - this is appreciated by the panel.
My first round performance was good, but second round was kinda subjective, so not much could be read into it. Hoping against hope!
All the best to all! :)

Regards
Karthik

do we need to take certis supporting all those achievements wich we mentioned in our application form....are they verifying all that extra curricular stuff 2?
Taurian Jain has posted this experience in "SPJIMR Call getters Profile & Group Interview related Discussions" thread... so posting here...

hey folksss,,
thatz my experience for S.P.JAIn
HAd my interview in the 3:00 batch at IIMB... unfortunately there were many interviews pending and my turn came at 4 only.. my advice do not go 1 hour prior because the registration takes only 5 mins ( maybe less)...

okies so the first round on interview .. had 2 women panelist and 1 alumni from 2001 batch... They formally introduced themselves and then told us that this process will be divided into three parts .. the first will be GD the second will be introduction and the last direct questions.
We were 6 ppl in the line of fire and me the first one ... the topic For GD was " Is teh media bubble going to burst " ( they did not specify the topic completely but we were given a small background and hence we came to know what it is all about ... a 10 min of good discussion.... then we were asked to give introduction me being the first .. DNT BE TOO VERBOSE U WILL B CUT IN BETWEEN AND DNT BE TOO SHORT...( WE were told that we have to tell about our grad, family, achievement, work, hobbies)...Tehn we were asked why we want to go for MBA and the choosen branch.. some cross questioning on this ...
thatz all a 30-35 mins process....
After about 20 mins we were given the results and 5 out of 6 made it ... i was one of them;) ...
Another wait of some one hour 15 mins and i got my chance at 6 ...
2nd round....
had three panelist ...one lady ( really very smart..) one old prof( really quick on thoughts) and the same alumni as i had in the previous round...
Firstly they asked us to give one passion that we have and one anger that we have ( in one line )..Anybody who was gng beyond two lines was cut out..( in between they told us that we are not passionate and have a answer just to impress them)... then the old proff in between started how the tramsmission of electricity is a problem and tell some innovative idea on how to solve it ..( he ultimately told us that he would like to see electricity transferred through satellite ):wow::wow::wow:.......now this was some big thinking...ok we finished off this and tehn they asked us abt our hobbies and cross questioned in one or two line .. i told them i like to read history books and they asked me what type and all... next question was to tell abt the family background in adjectives only in one sentence... after that started the real interview... the old proff started lecturing about ethics, values, beliefs, ethics and all this things and continued for abt 30 mins and we had to sometimes cut him in between to put our point .... do not know what he asked us to reply or what he was seeing in us ... BUt then that was the worst 30 mins of the interview where i did not had any idea abt what he is talking about.....MY TAKE: GO THROUGH THIS THINGS....
then we were asked to describe ourself in 1 word.. and then asked to leave ... In between a person said that he had a business plan and gave an amazing business plan .. the panelist were impressed ans asked him if he gets admission he will be given it under the pretext that he will not sit for placements.. AN that guy refused.. my personal thought were that he had a good plan and if he was passionate abut it he should have accepted that ..( IF I GET HOLD OF SUCH PLAN I AM READY TO START MY BUSINESS:):)...

that was it then docs verification . we were asked to keep our photocopies and then asked to leave ..( the early batch had a problem in verificationof docs as they were calculating all the marks) .. TOTAL time around 4 hours....

thatz all form my side...

GI-1:
Number of Ppl present: 7
Panel Members Intro:
Time: 40-45 mins

Panel:
Dr Sunil Lakdawala and Madhu Ramakrishnan

First up, The panelists asked each candidate to introduce themselves.
2 minutes was given to each person. He was interested in
Work ex,interests and the specialization applied to.
(The Panelists were taking notes when we introduced ourselves)

Then one guy had said interest as cricket.
So The prof asked about IPL.
Then a discussion followed on why it was shifted and what else could have been done.
After this, They asked about the recession and the impact on India.
After the second person spoke, there was a small discussion on recession, depression and slowdown-Differences between them.
To some, The panelist narrowed the field like
"What should Indian companies do"
What should the government do

Then he asked 1 or 2 qns to each individual.
Mostly to clarify doubts that he had on the contents of the profile sheet and the distinctive attributes sheet.

I was asked about the different mutual fund that our company has in India and the differences between each fund.( I had a much longer discussion on the same at FMS 😞 )

Then Dr Sunil asked why SP Jain to each candidate.

After that the other panelist Madhu, gave a situation

A train is going in a track. Two paths to take right and left. The train usually goes in the right track. Today there are 4-5 kids playing in the Right track and there was one guy who knew the train usually goes in the right side track, was playing in the left side track. If you have to direct the train what will you do? Obviously you cannot stop the train, not enough time to get to the kids, no horn ..conditions like that.

Some people said- Right track, as the guy in the left has taken an informed decision. I said right side more people, so we should choose the left track.Killing one is preferrable to killing many. One person supported me.

With that the first interview was over.

They declared the results in 10 minutes.
4 out of the 7 were selected.
Second round started in another 10 minutes

Time: 1 hr (After 1 Hour, the lady Prof remarked that 1 hour is up and Prof Rao promptly wound up the whole thing in 20-30 seconds)

We were warned that this interview will be much more intensive than the previous one. At the start Dr Uma said Be natural. Dont wear mask and try and pretend. We are here to evaluate and see if you will fit into SP Jain. If you try to pretend, it doesnt serve any purpose. Then she asked each individual to talk abt interests/passions.

She wanted people to be specific. Someone said Movies.
She asked name some movies. He gave some classics. She said tell me recent movies ,coaching classes would have insisted you to go for classics.
4 of us said reading. She asked us to name books.
2 people said Jack Welch. 1 guy said Chetan Bhagat.
I said Jeffrey Archer. Now reading mostly business related. Gave 2-3 books.( She smiled and said I will come back to you later). There was also a discussion on Archer's imprisonment and whether that was reflected in his writings.
1 girl said George Orwell.
The Prof wrote down everything.

Once she had asked everybody about their interests.
She indicated the other panelist to continue.

He asked 1 guy about Nirma Vs Lux. Nirma is cheap. Lux is a bit costlier.
2-3 people talked. I said Nirma is perceived as a detergent brand. So people consider it as good only for clothes. Someone else said Lux is marketed as a beauty product.
The Prof said positioning and asked a question, I talked abt the Nano.
The Prof asked me Why Fin and not marketing.
I gave my reasons and the Other Prof said I like your ideas.

Then one person had a name that sounded like Subiksha.
So The prof asked that candidate abt the problems faced by Subiksha.
A discussion followed on Subiksha, Pricing, Service...
A lot of people talked abt the stores not being good, Service being poor.
I talked about the financial difficulties, aggressive expansion, new geographies.

Then there was a discussion on Dhoni Vs Tendulkar for sometime.

After 1 hour, they decided to wind it up.

It was a good and different experience.

Misc:

In both the rounds, they gave us a lot of scope to express our thoughts and opinions. It was more to see how we think and how we react. It was not about how much we knew.

In the second interview, One candidate mentioned Bharathinatyam. The Prof asked Why do you think dancers are looked down in the society. The historical reasons and all that. She said I want to know if you just do it or if you think about it.

When there was a talk on movies. She asked one guy
How many times have you watched your fav movie?
What was the difference between the first time and the subsequent times.
She said she wanted to know if it was a repeat experience or an enhanced experience. Dr Uma Narain was aware of all books, movies, plays mentioned by the candidates and that was one wide range.
