Good thread. I haven't read through it all.. but tried to get a jist of it. It's rather an interesting question. WHY are we slogging away all this time to get into any good MBA school? WHY is ISB number 1 on everyone's list.. even though for 20 lakh rupees its not even a degree program.. just a certification. etc etc etc

I think the question might be taken retroactively. WHY did we go for engineering? WHY did we prefer CS (if we got the right ranks)? WHY did we slog away to get into IITs?

Basically this is what life has become. It's almost as if we lead our lives based on a template. Not a lot of people know what they want from their lives - hence the reason that we look for the answer within others.

In my case, I couldn't get admission in IIT or any other Engg college in India. So I "ran" away to US. Got a degree in Computer Science. Lost a lot of hair over H1b visas and whatever. Got a job as a consultant. Traveled throughout the US. Made good money. Lost money in Vegas. Spent it on nice cars. Got laid off. Found another job in IT. Now have realized that I can't be part of IT for a long time. Can't see myself doing this forever. Maybe it's something I should've realized in 9th class -- but being 25, imagine its not too late.

Want to head back to India. Left too much back there. Trying to realize that dream. To stay out of IT, realized that MBA is probably the fastest way to change careers. Hence am here! (and GMAT in 2 weeks)..

This is the truth. If I had another way to head back to India (business, job offer not in IT, etc) - I wouldn't be going down this route.

Now this is the real reason. Let's see what BS i come up with for the essays 😉

Ok guys this is my first post at pagalguy.com and I dnt thnk it'll ever be more frank than this. I'll just ask you guys (who denounce the MBA) a plain and simple question:-

I'm 23. A Mechanical Engg. working for the govt. I'm from a financially average family but I have the ambition of making it to the top of the world one day. I cant afford to start a business on my own that'll be worth my dreams. I can't goto lucrative B-Schools abroad bcoz of d same reesn. And as is a well known fact, govt. pays you a pittance even after the 6th pay commission. I have clear goals. I wanna be rich ASAP. I've never went to a 5 star hotel. I can count on fingertips the no. of times I sat in a car. I think 10 times before buying a pair of jeans. I did my engg. in one pair of jeans and one pair of trousers.

AND I'M SICK OF THIS NIGGARDLY LIFESTYLE.

I've dreams. I wanna own a ferrari. I wanna see Las Vegas. I wish I had the iphone. In fact, first of all I wish my parents had an a/c in their room after spending whole of their lives thriftly.

AND THIS IS THE PROBLEM:-

I wanna do it ASAP. Now tell me ppl. Do I have another option that could set my for a rendezvous with my dreams in the next 5-6 yrs ??? Ohh and FY(kind)I, my problem is just the less exacerbated version of those of millions and millions of ppl in this country. And those millions, my friend, don't even have access to a computer to post their disgust at how unfair life can be.

Life is unfair.. Really i agree. Im a socialist stuck being capitalist only because i dont know a way out to help people who aren't well off. Anyways, to the main question. I have the same dreams, aspirations as you. Hell, i even want to do an MBA to get there. Its almost like you are a clone of mine

EVEN IM SICK OF THIS N*******Y LIFESTYLE.

But im willing to take life as it comes. I badly want to get out of mediocrity. But it'll happen. Trust yourself and relax. You'll find a way through. Just not by wanting things immidiately and doing the wrong things. ANY EMPTINESS can be filled if you're really rich. YOu can also buy alot of things with that money.

The entire point of my seemingly useless post is that an MBA is a step after which you find your way. Somehow someway you'll do it. Just relax and live the present or you'll consume your day in worrying over how you will ever achieve that insormountable goal of your, like I worry.

Just do everything you can to reach there. Work hard, study, work, do lae night and it'll happen. If it doesn't then after another 20 years you would be able to treat a bum like me to a beer atleast.

PS: Mods: s/he isn't my clone.

I appreciate and respect your dreams.

the fury you have in you will certainly make you rich one day

BUT............

the day when you could own a ferrari, numerous jeans and a uncountable A/Cs you will feel the same emptiness that you feel now.

Boss the grass always looks greener on the other side

don't make money your motive, Go find find yourself your true passion and follow it till the end you'll be much richer brighther and happier. Believe ME.

buddies,
a few words of caution and some of experience.

mba is not the gateway to dreams, its the path (and that too maybe, cause not every mba is doing well.) secondly, with the recession on who knows what the scene will be two years hence.

in my view, the dreams dont come with an mba. the dreams come only when we learn what an mba has to offer. not by the books, but by the looks, i.e. the baility to define and understand the potential of any subject under consideration by one look at it. this defines whether those dreams may come, or they may go. for my friends, mba is

"the streetcar named desire, ride well, ride hard, cause when a flat tyre comes along, only the rider can ride the ride, and it is only he who matters."

just putting across my thoughts,

for all those who quoted reasons like bored with the current job, need competition and challenge want bigger responsibilities et al have you ever tried working in a start-up ?

if not think about it before deciding MBA is the cure. a start-up job gives you ample opportunities to prove yourself, push you to your limits which helps in discovering yourself, will be a hell lot more of a learning experience than 2 yrs of classroom education. It is financially rewarding in the long term also(ofcourse it depends on how well your start-up succeeds). More than anything else you get to meet and work with wonderful people.

And you can always do your MBA later if you are not happy with your start-up job. waise more work experience means more salary right 😃 and to add the cliches you add diversity to the classroom, you are more mature, whatever..

Cheers,
Deepu.

a nice thread..
n wht capricious has said is true .. i might repeat many points which might have already been discussed in this thread... but aftr completing my MBA m tempted to write on this thread...

Why MBA.. ya v all make up answers to get that one seat in one f the most prestigious college ..

Motive Upfront:
1) career growth
2) exposure to good faculty, competition
3) skills add ons
4) networking
5) Change present work profile

Personal Motive:
1) Heavy Pay Cheque
2) a Good Brand Name
3) Change work profile
4) i really wanna do coz i want 2 b a marketer, ad guru, iBanker
5) yaa at times may b a GF:tongue:

there cud b more add ons to the above two headings of motives

now the REALITY CHECK
what u get after doin MBA

1)Career Growth : depends if u work hard aftr ur MBA in ur job

2) Exposure to good faculty: depends on college u gettin in .. Competition: even in best college ppl fail 2 realize competition... dey r happy wid dere own progress in makin it 2 a good college.. n dnt mind even if they r last in their batch... just like me ..

3) Skill Ad ons: YES .. kuch fayada hota hai will explain later on

4) Change in Present Work Profile: Yes sure, u cum into management cadre.. but agar MBA is nt d only route to management room.. nuthin can beat WORK EXPERIENCE

5) Networking: SURELY .. i personally feel its d best thing

6) heavy Cheque: Yes

ok dis was just myopic .. factors i enlisted .. i threw light on those

puttin infornt f u guys my example...
well dere is a difference wht i used to be when i joined PG n now when i have passd out frm SCMHRD..
wht difference.. i have worked on numerous projects which have given practical exposure to different management situations, my thought process has changed largely (just an ex: pehle i just used 2 watch adverts now i analyse 'em which ad is gud .. is it communicating d message effectively or not), Networking have many frenz . a few HR ones who might help me later in my career... , sum analytical skills dat will help me make management decisions better.... , have becum workalcoholic, can work 16 hrs a day, take more people sense which i feel is coz i have met so many ppl nhave listened 2 so many GLs (agree again dat most f us sleep during GLs)

yes i din realize while i was preparin for CAT dat all dis will add 2 mykitty .. i wanted a gud package.. moreover i wanted 2 b a marketer... have got dcent package.. but dream is still half fulfilled.... have 2 work hard in my job to becum a PM ..

so MBA is required if u feel u lack sumthing 2 b a CEO... (cumon every1 wants 2 b one .. if nt CEO den a higher position either in sum1 else's business or ur own business)

after all jeene ke liye paisa kamaana hai ... ya toh koi aur dega salary ya phir khud business karogey

if u do ur own business.. den agar skills nahin hain to b competitive MBA karke aa jayenge...
agar kisi aur ke liye karogey kaam .. toh aana toh chahiye naa kuch .. MBA kar loge credibility bad jayegi

ek cheez aur .. MBA seekhati hai BAKAR... jo i guess humara janam sidh adhikaar hai lekin hum sirf kam logon ke saath kar paate hain .. MBA karne ke baat i can do bakar wid ne1 now .. haha

pata nahin kitne log agree karenge . kitne log groan karenge ..

We are a world of hypocrisy,
Religion, Politics, Sports, even our day to day life is full of hypocrisy. So I could agree with you about "Why MBA?" or "to hell with MBA", but here is the point, when someone has to put a person on place to run a company run by thousands of shareholders money, who will he choose someone who says he is good at managing or someone who says he has studied management. Simple analogy, would you prefer getting treated by a compounder who has 20 yrs of experience in AIIMS or any doctor.
I adore the feeling of "what I want to do" and "rat race" etc. etc. but in Rome do as the roman does, this world is ruled by MBAs, Lawyers, Politicians, Businessmen/Industrialists, Financiers and Entertainers (all of them good ones, in their domain) and thats the way world is, so you have 2 choices, change the mindset of billions of people worldwide or change your own mindset, if you are successfull at the first, you won't need any degree to make a name for yourself.

PS: I find it amusing the tone with which people look down upon the desire to earn money, and it is our very own pseudo socialist upbringing which compells us to think of someone who wants to make money as a mean person. What is wrong if someone wants to make money, and if it is the central motive of getting an MBA degree then be it, why to look at such a reply with loathe? (my question comes with sense of intrigue not skepticism)
