Hi Dushyant sir...could you please help me with this term ' Social Media Analyst ' ?

dushyant bhatia Says
BTW Social media analyst is a person who promotes / advertises / markets products or brands or services on social networking sites like twitter, facebook, orkut, digg, forums etc or on social media tools like blogger, squidoo, hubpages etc.

To also put the record straight about what a Social Media Analyst means: These days, public relations professionals and advertising agencies are finding that the young crowd spends more time on the Internet (on Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, forums, etc) than on reading newspapers or watching TV news. So in order to promote the products of their clients to youngsters, they need to reach out to these new mediums. However, unlike in newspapers where you can spend crores and bombard news and ads, on Facebook and Orkut or forums it is considered spamming and not taken in a good way. For eg - if your favorite soap brand spends crores on a dazzling ad campaign in newspapers, you'll appreciate it and talk about it. But if they intrude into your Facebook profile and keep messaging you about the soap, you will get pissed off and never buy that brand again. Hence was born this rather fraudulent profession 'Social Media Analyst', which consists of people who claim to market your product on blogs, Facebook, Orkut. They claim to be specialists, but in reality they have little method or science behind it. They exist and survive because the older generation cannot understand how Facebook works and needs someone to do their marketing on Facebook for them. In reality, even these Social Media Marketers have little clue. Most of these Social Media Marketers will go create fake profiles, make a fake conversation among those fake profiles about the product to be sold. An example of such a fake conversation is the one between dushyant and dhruv above. To normal people like you and me, it would appear as if the product is actually being praised/talked about by a lot of people. But in reality, it's a scam. It can get you leverage or money for a short period of time, but faking cannot be a real career, unless you want to become a con-man in life.

While there are example of ethical and intelligent campaigns using social media, their numbers are less than 1% of the total so-called social media marketing campaigns. Don't get into Social MEdia Marketing unless you have something more valuable and ethical to add to it than fake conversations.

Another tip for everyone wanting to work in startups - beware of people who dish-out stakes in their company to unknown people for the smallest of jobs, as if they were distributing sweets. It shows how less they value their company, and how easy it is to become the co-founder of this company. When push comes to shove, these people will drop you just as easily as they took you on board (for eg, when they meet a techie who's much better than you), and you'll be wondering what just happened.
I come in peace. Take me to your leader. http://www.twitter.com/apurv

Hi Dushyant,

My question is off topic but hope you will not mind answering it. I just wanted to know how did you find a company to write your initial codebase cuz AFAIK many companies wud decline to take up individual projs as they wont shine on their portfolio. Is there any better method than random search & word of mouth? Also, how much did it approximately cost you to get it done?

I am hoping to start my own startup two years down the lane so any info would be helpful.

Thanks...

Hi Dushyant ...guess i found the right words

And as far as i know...we dnt need a specialized degree from anywhere...Anyone can be a Social Media Analyst...Graduation can be one of the criteria though...

what do you say ?

cheers,
Amit

Yep.. no specialized degree as such... In America, normally 13-14 year olds do this and make a couple of products promoting products and services.. Anyone with a very good understanding of social media can be a social media analyst..

P.S. Guys lets keep this thread for any questions on my startup.. don't "APPLY" per se.. I'm not looking for an employee.. I'm looking for a PARTNER

Is it only for programmers of even full time social media marketers can apply??

Hi Dhruv
Long time....

Currently my priority is to have a lead technical head for the startup so that I could focus more on the marketing efforts and industy alliances.. Currently the services are not up to the mark technically and I want someone who could take responsibility for the same

Social media analyst is a requirement for this startup but not at this stage..

Puys
I currently run a website (in my signature) which I do not intend to monetize for atleast 12-18 months.
The tech development for my website has been outsourced to a tech company. Since I'm not making any revenue via this site and do not intend to do so for a while, I wish to minimize my cost. I was wondering if any hardcore techie among the PG member base would want to work on this.
Obviously, I will not be paying for the services but could give out a certain %age of stake in the startup. You will not be required to quit your full time job and could work on the website 1-2 hrs a day (and a couple of hours on weekends). Currently I have close to 4-5k members (most of them inactive). I won't be marketing my services until I'm done with the tech development work. My objective is to get atleast 50-75K loyal users by Jun-Oct 2011 and then apply for VC funding. It's risky but as I mentioned you will not be required to quit your full time job. You could cut down on socializing a bit
I interviewed many techies over a couple of months but couldn't find anyone who is ambitious and passionate about startups. Over the period of time (I joined PG in 2005), I've come across so many puys who dreamt of having their own startup but were not very keen on taking risks. This could probably attract those wannabe entrepreneurs
Some of the pointers
- Hardcore techies/programmers comfortable with PHP, PERL, DHTML, JavaScript, ASP, XML etc
- Should be based in Mumbai (Sorry about that but since I'm based in Mumbai, I'd be comfortable working with those from Mumbai itself)
- Should be comfortable with social media marketing - Active involvement in social media networks: blogs, Flickr, Myspace, Digg, Facebook, Squidoo, Twitter, etc.
- SEO skills (not an expert though)
- No investment from your side
- Comfortable with FB and Twitter application (not necessary though)
- I'll be taking care of finance and marketing initiatives
- Having experience with an online startup would benefit
- I don't care about the degree - A matriculate fail may also apply if he/she is comfortable with the pointers above
Just google around to find anything you'd like to know about my startup.
Questions are welcome
If interested, send across your CV with 2-3 lines as to why you want to be a part of this startup. Contact mail specified on my website - Blogertizeworld - Low Cost Blog advertising network
Cheerz
P.S. I hope this thread is not taken to be as an advertisement since I'm sure many Puys with entrepreneurial instincts would look forward to be a part of this venture

EDIT : Only questions relating to my startup shall be answered. Pitching your CV in this thread could be against the PG rules.. If you wanna send ur CV, go to my website - find the email id (click on contact) and send the CV. In case u have any personal questions - PM me
