Industrial visit for 4th semester civil engineering students at ACC Cement plant
Recently a group of 47 students headed by Prof. Prakash M.R, (Head of the department), Mr Kiran and Mr Harish Kulakarni went for one day industrial visit to ACC cement plant. ACC (Associated Cement Company) is the largest producers of cement in INDIA. Thondebhavi unit being the second unit to be set up in Karnataka, it has the capacity to grind around 1.6 million tonnes a year. The unit is meant only for grinding and packing purpose, with an average daily dispatch of 530 tonnes. It gets the necessary clinkers required for grinding from Wadi cement plant Gulburga (Asia`s largest cement producing plant), through wagons. During the visit students happen to see a lake (more of a tank), in half dried state. Upstream side of the lake was stone pitched, whereas vegetation were grown in the downstream , the roots hold the soil together and thus preventing it from erosion due to flowing water. Prof. Prakash explained about the working and purpose of the sluice gate. After reaching Thondebhavi, students were given safety helmets and Instructed not to remove the helmet at any point in time as a safety measure. Mr. Ravi (HR Manager) gave us a warmth welcome. He gave a brief introduction about the unit, and “safety” instructions were given by Mr. Raju (Chief production head). Some of the safety measures are as follows:- Wear shoes and safety helmets within the premises. Wear seat belts while driving. Don't drive over 16 kmph. Usage of mobile phones is not entertained.
