My short reply to "When I should apply" question - "Whenever you are ready". Which means when you are able to produce your best GMAT scores, when you think you have those essays bullet-proof, when you think you will be able to get better recos, when you think your ideas have crystallized..........
Standard reply - R1 > R2. This is simple. Think about when you start off your month. You potentially have a larger budget so might get swayed into buying something emotionally. Same thing happens in applications. The AdComm still has a few hundred seats to fill so they might say "You know this guy is good enough, I think applicants of this calibre deserve to get in". The same response a few months down the line might be "You know this guy is good. But heck I already have 10 guys with similar profiles - what does he have different ?" Get the point ?

hi imjimmy,
schools admit max no. of applicants in R1. Leaving very less no. of seats for R2 & even lesser for R3.
The chances of getting scholarship are also next to nil @later rounds.
u should apply on later rounds only if u hv some significant addition in ur resume coming up. although some admission experts use this radical strat of applying @R2... will write about that later. its pretty complex.

Is there a significant disadvantage in applying for Round 2. viz a viz round 1.
Are Round 2 acceptance rates much lower that those in R1?

yesits not too late if you are looking for R2 or R3
because for R1 you have to submit your whole application package before around mid-October.
for example for Harvad & Columbia its Oct11
fro Stanford its Oct 25
for Duke its Nov1
so u wont be able to apply for Round one.
You will also need some time to think about the schools you want to apply to once
if your GAMT goes up or down than what you expected,,,,,,
i would reccoment you to take the test before mid September.
