Almost all BSNL/MTNL employees have access to free phones...

If they spent too much time calling up KBC 2, it may tilt the odds a wee bit in their favour.

Well, caveat emptor. All consumers are 'taken for a ride' in some way or other. It's standard practice these days. Wonder what KPMG has to say about this, and whether their word carries any weight as a trusted third party.

And this was how it all began...

26 January, 2006
Big Bs bye, bye to KBC

A KBC fan has unearthed fundamental questions on the selection process conducted by the organizers to select 10 lucky contestants out of an estimated 25 lakh callers in each episode.

Breaking News on India TV disclosed on January 26/27 that a call received on its Viewer Alert number 93505 93505, cited evidence of the non-transparent selection process of KBC2. The viewer, Bharat Kumar Lodha, is with a PSU bank in Udaipur, and his research has brought out the inexplicable situation where a chosen few have managed to buck lakhs of other contestants and found a place in front of the BigB.. India TV has found that nine BSNL employees and one MTNL employee got into the Top Ten of KBC2, in apparent violation of rules governing advertisers and partners in the contest.

India TV approached Samir Nair, Chief Operating Officer and reportedly the brain behind KBC for comment on Jan 4 and Jan 11, citing specifics. Apparently, Nair did not respond. Another email addressed to Peter Mukerjea, Chief Executive of Star, evoked a response but only to the effect that Mukerjea will revert in due course.

India TV lead anchorman Rajat Sharma described as the near-zero probability of any one person making it to KBC2 twice, not to mention as many as 5 making it. He also cited details of the 10 BSNL/MTNL employees, and emphasized that all the information was pulled out of the public domain from Stars website www.indya.com.

The Selection Procedure to reach Hot Seat:

ROUND 1:
At 8:00 p.m. when the questions lines are opened, participants need to be able to answer the one question thats been asked. The question will be specific to a forthcoming KBC2 episode. Callers need to call 19044247827 for BSNL and press the relevant option; Dial/SMS 646 for Airtel and press the relevant option; 19044247827 for MTNL and press the relevant option. You will be part of approximately 25 lakh callers* for that particular episode

ROUND 2:
If participants get the answer right (almost everyone would have because the questions are very simple), the computer will randomly select 500 callers**out of all correct entries for that particular episode. If selected in the lucky 500, youll receive a phone call from the organizers and youll be asked to reply to 2 questions within 10 seconds.

This process has to be read alongside the Quota 1 system where the country has been divided into 10 Zones (1-10) and each Zone needs to have equal representation and an Overall Quota System wherein at least 20 per cent of the short-listed candidates have to be women and at least 20 per cent have to be between 18 and 35.

ROUND 3:
If a participant gets both answers right, he/she would be eligible for this round. Among all correct entries, the computer will randomly generate a list of 100 of you***. If amongst the lucky 100, youll get another phone call from the organizers. This time there will be 3 close-ended questions on General Knowledge and 1 near-ended question. The organizers will call you within the next three days between 1:00 pm 9:00 pm.

***Source: General Rules, Part A, Round 3. This process will have to be read alongside an Overall Quota System wherein at least 20 per cent of the short-listed candidates have to be women and at least 20 per cent have to be between 18 and 35.

ROUND 4:
If a participant has got the first three answers right, he will be eligible for making it to the last 10. If there is a tie then the fourth question will be considered. Among all correct entries, the computer will randomly generate a list of 10 final participants****.

ROUND 5:

Repeat participation of five people
Taking up the first issue, it is understood that reaching the top 10 is not an easy task on hand for all KBC II viewers. But for five people was it just luck striking not once but twice?

Contestant Profession City Episode Telecast Date Position
Prem Prakash Rai Sub Divisional Engineer, BSNL Bhopal Episode 4 12/08/05
One of ten contestants aiming for the Hot Seat

Five of these people were selected twice from 25 lakh callers. They were lucky enough to be selected twice in the top 500 and further randomly selected in top 100. Yet again lucky to be selected twice in the top 10. In their second appearances four of these participants have won money. Was it just luck that favoured these five participants twice over 25 lakh callers?

Participation of BSNL & MTNL Employees
Part B: General Rules of the KBC II clearly states Employees of the company, the producers of the programme Synergy Communications Pvt. Ltd., the advertising agency which has been appointed from time to time, and all sub-contractors and agents rendering services in respect of the competition, any sponsor; and members of their immediate family; persons other than Indian nationals, or Indian nationals living out of India,, are ineligible to enter the competition. Failure to provide proof or affidavit of eligibility, including the correct date of birth and all other documents as required as per the rules and regulation within a reasonable time upon request by the company may result in disqualification and/or the withholding or withdrawal of a prize.

BSNL and MTNL are service providers and sponsors for KBC II hence are bound by this rule. Surprisingly nine BSNL employees and one MTNL employee have participated in KBC II. There names are:

And this is how KBC 2 ppl defend themselves...

KBC 2: Press Release

Certain sections of the media have attempted to defame KBC 2 and the Star network by deliberately creating an atmosphere of innuendo and hype. These stories, based upon incomplete information & mis-interpretation of facts, are but an attempt to stir up public frenzy.

The key allegations are:

1. Mr. Bachchan is not doing further episodes of KBC 2 due to irregularities in the selection process.
2. A few people have managed to get into Fastest Finger First round (round of 10) twice.
3. A few BSNL/ MTNL employees have managed to get into Fastest Finger First round.

These allegations have been presented in a manner, such as to turn public opinion against the show and the STAR Network, and to malign the integrity of a highly successful and much-loved programme.

The facts are:

1. Mr. Bachchan has stated to Star representatives, that due to medical reasons, he is not in a position to confirm shooting dates for the next few months.

"We have always maintained that Mr. Bachchan's health is of paramount importance" said Sameer Nair, Chief Operating Officer, Star India. "After Mr. Bachchan expressed his inability to shoot for the next couple of months on medical advice, we have taken the decision to end this season of KBC. We are also contemplating the modalities of returning with the third season of KBC after taking this break. Claiming that Mr. Bachchan is distancing himself from the show due to alleged irregularities in the selection process is trying to put weight into a story that is baseless."

2. The rules allow for contestants to come to the round of Fastest Finger First (round of 10) more than once. Only if the participant has made it to Hot Seat (which means the winner of Fastest Finger First round) is he disqualified from subsequent participation in the competition.

3. BSNL/ MTNL are national telephony service providers and not restricted entities as per the rules of KBC 2.

4. The selection process is validated by one of the world's leading audit firms, KPMG.

"Frivolous accusations of this nature have created an environment of malicious innuendo. We will be taking strong action, using whatever means available to us under the law of the land, against such deliberate defamation and slander against KBC 2 and the Star Network" said Sameer Nair. "It is a clear case of sensational journalism by trying to stir up public frenzy on hype rather than facts."

India TV allegations on 'KBC 2': Star threatens to sue

(27 January 2006 7:30 pm)

MUMBAI: Star India has hit out strongly at India TV over a report in the Hindi news channel that puts in doubt the selection process of the Amitabh Bachchan-hosted gameshow KBC 2 on Star Plus.

Star India asserts the allegations are an attempt "to defame the gameshow property" and has threatened to take "strong action, using whatever means available to us under the law of the land."

"Certain sections of the media have attempted to defame KBC 2 and the Star network by deliberately creating an atmosphere of innuendo and hype. These stories, based upon incomplete information and misinterpretation of facts, are but an attempt to stir up public frenzy," a statement issued by the broadcast network avers.

In the statement, Star India COO Sameer Nair has hinted at the possibility of his network filing a defamation suit against India TV. "Frivolous accusations of this nature have created an environment of malicious innuendo. We will be taking strong action, using whatever means available to us under the law of the land, against such deliberate defamation and slander against KBC 2 and the Star Network. It is a clear case of sensational journalism by trying to stir up public frenzy on hype rather than facts," Nair is quoted as saying.

When contacted by indiantelevision.com for further details, Nair refused to offer anything more on the matter saying, "The release issued by Star says all what we want to say."

In a news report telecast yesterday (26 January), India TV had alleged that Bachchan was not doing further episodes of KBC 2 due to irregularities in the selection process. The report also alleged that a few people had managed to get into Fastest Finger First round (round of 10) twice and a few BSNL/ MTNL employees had managed to get into Fastest Finger First round.

Star has made a point by point rebuttal of the charges. Says Nair, "We have always maintained that Bachchan's health is of paramount importance. After Bachchan expressed his inability to shoot for the next couple of months on medical advice, we have taken the decision to end this season of KBC. We are also contemplating the modalities of returning with the third season of KBC after taking this break. Claiming that Bachchan is distancing himself from the show due to alleged irregularities in the selection process is trying to put weight into a story that is baseless."

On the issues raised in regard to the Fastest Finger First round, Nair had this to say: "The rules allow for contestants to come to the round of Fastest Finger First (round of 10) more than once. Only if the participant has made it to Hot Seat (which means the winner of Fastest Finger First round) is he disqualified from subsequent participation in the competition."

India TV CEO Chintamani Rao, however, counters, "The rules may well permit a contestant to come up to the round of 10 more than once, but that is not the point at issue in our story. It is simply a matter of mathematical (im)probability. As the numbers get funnelled down from up to 25 lakh (2.5 million) to 500 to 100 to 10, with a combination of skill, quotas and random selection at each stage, the probability of one person making it twice is near zero. When that happens 5 times in a span of three months, ordinary viewers wonder"

On the charge that Star violated KBC rules by permitting employees of the gameshow service providers BSNL & MTNL to participate, Nair insists BSNL/ MTNL are national telephony service providers and not restricted entities as per the rules.

Rao refuses to buy that line of reasoning though. The India TV CEO says, "The question is simply whether Star TV makes money out of these phone calls. If Star TV has a revenue sharing arrangement with them, as broadcasters and telecom companies usually do, then they must be restricted entities, in the spirit of fair competition.

Asked to respond to Star's assertion that the allegations brought forth by India TV were frivolous in nature, Rao says, "What is frivolous is a subjective question. To a large multinational broadcaster like Star this may well be a frivolous matter. To crores (tens of millions) of Indians who have believed in KBC and especially to those who have spent their time, money and emotions, chasing a dream, it is not. Since the story broke our phone lines have been jammed and we have received thousands of email and sms messages from viewers expressing their anguish. In our daily India Poll 99 per cent of respondents want a refund. The rest want to let it be because of their love and respect for Amitabh Bachchan."

Point and counterpoint. Ultimately it could well be the courts that decide who is the villain and who the victim in this episode.

zango Says
why use KBC's name to attract attention to this thread? you could have made the thread title more relevant.

Sorry Gold Spot Bhai... but tht was the proverbial tip of the proverbial iceberg... tht was the breaking news of the day(yesterday), and the first such expose of its kind for Indian TV audience, so IMHO the title is apt... yet its open to change if i m infringing upon any kinda rights...

But looking at the volumes of troubles into which KBC(now we find tht even KBC 1 was actually scrapped due to some legal proceedings - Source of info: India TV again) has gotten itself, the producers wont have the face to question public fora like these...

moreover, these shows are like gambling - even lottery. what's the big deal all about?

I second the opinion tht it borders on and promotes speculative behaviour. The big deal is the maddening amount of moolah involved... not the INR 2 crore (or other such) prize money, but the revenues for the producers n the sponsors/co-sponsors... n all this at the cost of hard-earned money of ppl who r shown the dream of a date of sorts with the Big B (or other such personalities), n a prospective chance (of a lifetime, in many cases) to bid farewell to deficiency of Vit. M!! And the icing on the cake is tht the behind-the-scene procedure is not actually fair, or at least some stipulative rules regarding participation are being violated...
