regardin family bizz...ive had 18 months of work there durin graduation....
n how do b-schools consider family bizz work-ex...do they count it seriously..
ne idea...

well u can go fr any domain of work as far as i know bt wats imp is tht u shud know bout ur work when u r sitting there for ur interview... they ll test ur knowledge fr tht job and ur field of work. so wats imp. is watever we do we do it sincearly and with a zeal to learn..

now regarding ur family business they ll consider it if u show them how ur mba will be usefull for ur business.. and needless to say u ll join the family business after ur mba.
but again wats imp is tht u covince them tht u totally understand ur business and u need this course to help u grow!
i don think tht they ll reject someone just bcoz he wanted to help his farther n not some other guy..

Joining a job just for the sake of work-ex is pretty lame

they all help eventually. I personally feel a MBA straight after graduation totally puts ur graduation to waste. how do you justify your 4 years of mechanical engineering if you dont see ur future as a mechanical engg. I've seen sooo many friends from mech n elec shifting to coding profiles in infy etc.

:

i totally agree with ur first part. one shud nt work fr th sake of work ex bt shud learn something out of it..

but for th second part what if some one did his grads jus to become elligible fr pursuin his mba??? or any pg course fr tht matter
what if his ultimate goal is to become an mba rite frm 11th std.???

or maybe u realise wat ur calling is only in ur final yr of graduation..
untill i study to become mech engg how cme i ll know wat it holds n is it for me or not.. maybe i dont want to learn further in that domain, so no question of joining a relevant firm..

well firstly bpo exp is counted in most b schools now as far i knw...
now cuming to tech courses which courses u ve in mind thts imp.
if u r thinking of any niit or aptech courses forget it they r nt going to help u ,u can take up text books instead!!
waise y do u want to pursue a tech course wen u r going fr a management course? cud be a ques nxt yr so be prepared..
workin in a bpo is worthwhile or not totally depends on whether u r comfortable with it or not? so decide on it..
ur family business can be a good option only if u r actually willing to join it after ur mba too..

exactly..not interestd in NIIT or aptech...
technical i meant..CFA or MS.Finance or sumthin...certification course..basically a fin guy i am....
regarding work ex....i was talkin abt relevance of work-ex....n relevant work 1 shud go 4..which has been answered in d previous post...

Joining a job just for the sake of work-ex is pretty lame i feel. If you want to work...then do so for at least 1-2 years. Then the experience would really count. Its not only how much technical knowledge u get to learn in the real working environment....but its the mere feel of working. to know how the company runs....to know how the marketing dept works in tandem with the supply chain dept. to know how salaries are handed out. to know about tax slabs. to know about job responsibilities....the politics in the hiearchy.....

they all help eventually. I personally feel a MBA straight after graduation totally puts ur graduation to waste. how do you justify your 4 years of mechanical engineering if you dont see ur future as a mechanical engg. I've seen sooo many friends from mech n elec shifting to coding profiles in infy etc.

if ur sure about what specialisation u want to pursue...then try getting some relevant work ex...at least for 2years. I've friends who managed to convince interview panels that they always wanted to go into research n strategy....but there was no such course after 12th....and they didnt want to commit to a co. and leave it straight after cat...so they didnt join it. FINE. if they buy this....good for u....if they don't....u'll be doomed.
plus with the ever changing cat pattern....what guarantee is there that u'll definitely do well.
I have a friend....who while working gave cat and got a 95 percentile....he left his job to prepare for cat a second time....and got a 91 percentile! its risky.....wasting a whole year just for one sunday in november! its risky.....

If your a student who simply cant justify his stream of graduation.....but u have ur long term goal sorted out....then get into heavy research of how u'll eventually achieve that....i.e if u want to start a consultancy....what exactly u need.....what are the stuff which are required for running a consultancy....et al....if u can get this across to ur interviewer and convince them that u have actually taken pains to plan out why u seriously want to do an mba....they'll be more appreciative than....u joining a company just for the sake of work ex.

its 2:30 in the nite....and i just felt like writing. Might not have made much sense...sorry!

And the way things stand.....i'll be at the PG Headquarters in a months time

This is not just for saying things, in the interview stage perhaps, about what you did in this year but also generally for your own benefit. For instance, I was thinking of joining Alliance Francaise. Someone suggested a computer course. I was looking at MICA's 6 month course, not that its easy or something but its also quite expensive.
How much do these things matter?
Any suggestions?

Must do somethng which may help u durin GD/PI..

If u interested in Finance then can go for NCFM certifications offered by National Stcok Exchange.
Ths will make ur case strong if u really lookin for Fianace as major..

hey farhan..my point of view is this : since u are taking cat next year, u willl certainly need sufficient time for the preparations.. work+mcom+cat at the same time sounds quite hectic.. i would suggest u to go for some course+mcom +cat..
Now the course depends on wat u want to go for.. foreign lang is always an advantage esp if u want to go for an mba in international business ..
if u are looking for a career in finance, u can look at courses at BSE, NSE...
Besides..there are always 6-month diploma courses in good institutes like welingkar..
after u sail thru cat comfortably, u will still have time on hand and u can take up a job till u join the b-school of your choice.. hope it was of some help..all the best!

Thanks aditi......after ur inputs i have decided i will do a course rather than working runs off to google 😛 anyways i think i will take some time and decide i still have till 24th as my mcom exams are getting over then.....till then puys please come out with ur suggestions

Wow a thread just in time........
Well let me tell you my situation......and please dont laugh
i started of with CA when i was in FYBcom cleared my foundation course got sick and tired of CA never gave the inter exam completed my graduation in year 2005.....was sitting at my dad's local restaurant after that and preparing for the CAT cudnt manage calls from iims managed one from xlri messed up the interview.....gave the CET in a bad shape just scored 92 percentile and i dont think i will get anywhere with that percentile...so my dad doesnt want me to stay at his restaurant now ventured out for a call center worked for 15 days took the half salary and left the job(hated the process).........now i am preparing for my MCom which is on 17th...woooo thats the story till now ok now the main part what after my MCOM i am surely going to give CAT next year as i think it will be too harsh on myself if i dont so there i will have my sunday classes for cat but other than that what should i do please suggest something a language course, should i work somewhere, should i start my own business, should i do some diploma course damn it i am so damn confused lol
