AP is Currently distributing freshly cooked healthy meals to over 1 million children all across India .For many of these children this is their only complete meal for the day. This gives them an incentive to come to school, stay in school and provides them with the necessary nutrients they need to develop their cognitive abilities to focus on learning. Now that Akshaya Patra has reached its goal of feeding one million children each school day, Akshaya Patra's next milestone is to serve 5 million children daily by 2020.An AC Nielsen Impact Study of the program showed an improvement in school enrollment, dropout rates with a continuous increase in classroom performance.
Akshaya Patra is the name of a NGO in India which supplies school meals to underprivileged school children.
The Akshaya Patra Foundation, the world's largest NGO-run midday meal program, has a vision that no child shall be deprived of education because of hunger. The Foundation was started in 2000 by its current Chairman, Madhu Pandit Das, an IIT engineer turned social entrepreneur.
The Sanskrit word Akshaya Patra (meaning abundant, inexhaustible vessel) has its origins in the great epic Mahabharata and means a pot of food which provides endless nourishment.
Even though it is a Not For Profit organisation it is run very professionally like a business organisation . All their process are transparent and their records are open to public scrutiny and audits . Their goal is to maximise returns from every rupee raised through fund raising .AP uses advanced technologies (including imported ones) to prepare hygienic freshly cooked food in as short a time as possible , with just 28$ AP can feed 2 children for a year !
