Hello everyone,

I'm Chanveer from the current XLRI GMP (General Mangement Program) batch. This is a 1-yr full time residential program, awarding a Exec-PGDGM degree.

This thread is meant for those of you who are interested in pursing a
1-yr course, and want to know more about XLRI GMP program. I and my
colleagues will do our best to answer your queries. Let me give a short background on this program. The GMP program was started more than 5 years back, as a requirement was felt to train managers from Tata Steel Ltd. Until 3 years back, this was a purely company sponsored program. 3 years ago, it was opened to self sponsored candidates via XAT.

Features of the program:
1. 1-yr full time residential program.
2. Dual speciliazation offered. Electives are - Finance, Operations
Management, Marketing, Information Systems, HR, Economics/Strategic
Management
3. XLRI brand name!!
4. LATERAL PLACEMENT OFFERED FROM OUR BATCH ONWARDS
5. Amazing batch diversity - work exp from 3.5 yrs to 20 yrs. Excellent
peer learning - levels above the normal courses
6. A very cost effective course. Total package for year 2006-07, including
fees, hostel, laptop etc - 3.5 Lks.

The application criteria for our batch was a minimum work ex of 3 years.
There are chances that this might be hiked a little bit for the next
batch, but no official word on this yet.

So, feel free to shoot any questions. :-)

pls send some more info for this prg. like whats abt its placement, average salary package. how one can get admission if he just have one year experience.

Hi veer,
it's very kind of u to be doing this. I am deeply interested in this particular course and would like to know a few things from u:
1. My profile is - chemical engineer with 4 yrs exp. in Oil & Gas - hardcore technical job profile with a more or less decent pay packet. Does it make sense to join this course with Operations specialization? I don't have opportunity of taking study leave.. so, with Operations specialization, is there reasonable chance of getting a suitable opening in manufacturing (preferably chemicals/FMCG/foods&beverages;/oil&gas;) area?
2. Is the XAT score required for getting a call for this course at the same level as what is required for the normal 2 yr course?

Hi Veer,

Is this pgm helpful if I want to change my stream (for e.g. I want to move from my current job in marketing to a job in finance)? Usually the two year courses have been the escape root. It would be great if you could shed some light on this. Also, what is the typical intake for this course?

Hi Ankit,

If you can ask specific questions, I'll be able to answer them. As such you can go to XLRI website, and get some information on this program in the "Academic Programmes" section. As I said earlier, ours is the first batch to have placements, but that will not be a cause for worry. Its XLRI which is placing us!! so it should be upto expectations.

You need to have atleast 3 yrs exp to apply to this course. If you have 1-yr exp try the BM, PMIR modules.

friends

1)
as far as shifting from mkting to finance is concerend..bit tought call ....even 2 yr programm if u r doing u will have to start as fresher...and make sure that GMP IS FOR IF U R LOOKING FOR MIDDLE MANAGEMENT LEVEL

2)for the person from oil and gas: well i am from commissioning and maintenance exp...5 yrs to be precise...nuclear power and then with honeywell..atutomation

i will be opting for operation and strategy/finance...area of cocentration is something one should be very clear....

ideally i would suggest that gmp is most suitable for those who have given good thought what they want to get into....have a clear understanding...this doesnt mean that u should be 100 clear...always u can come to xlri and then think about it....but a clarity always help..

for those who already have exp of 4 yrs plus..i think studying for 2 yrs...tough choice...ur getting as good as 32 subjects in GMP as compared to some 42 subjects in 2yr prog....

one year programm are future ...atleast for those with exp....

all institutes are designing their program is this direction..more or less..be it spjain, mdi, imt...

xlri brand perse ....no doubts....values and discipline grt..something what i have observed here at xlri.....in last 45 days....

2. Is the XAT score required for getting a call for this course at the same level as what is required for the normal 2 yr course?

To an extent it would depend on your profilegenerally it is sligthly lesser than the 2 year courses

Hi Sahasid,

I was quite busy last few days in tests, assignments, midterms and assignments once again !! So did not check this thread. But other GMP colleagues are getting into this now, so you'll get some pretty quality answers.

About the XAT score required for GMP, it is not as tough as the normal BM/PMIR batch. Your selection depends on combination of work exp and XAT score. We have ppl in our batch from approx 85% to approx 98%. If you have quality work ex, low scores are accepted.

About change of stream, i.e. a total change in career direction, 1-yr course is always a risky option. This is there anywhere. Its better to select specializations which add onto your experience. Frankly, I dont know how good GMP is for domain change - we'll have to wait for result of first placement to find out. So, I wouldn't take the risk right now.

well friend ...with kind of exp u have xlri gmp is one of the best option u can have apart from iima, iimc or isb...but if u see the ROI..xlgmp score tons....we have many candidates from IT with exp ranging from 4 to 7 yrs...and probably from next term exp limit is being hiked to 5 yrs...plus some increaments in fees....

first term we have learnt..accouts,economics,operation,communication,organisation behaviour...marketing...all u can relate to your experience..and u will enjoy seeing different facet of organisation....ur breadth will multiply ...ur horizon will expand....

well to say..its quite a good crash course...and being name of xl...it will sell....look for the placement stats this time if u have doubt...otherwise if u believe in ur capability and xl name..u should start preparing for xat....

feel free to ask ....

i am instrumentation engineer...5 yrs exp..nuclear power corp..and honeywell automation ...operation and strategy/finance would be my electives...

well from next year it would be 5 yrs....u will have to wait a little bit more..

Hi Soka,

tough luck but next year, the experience requirement will go up to 5 years. Have your tried SPJ and ISB? IMT and MDI have also come out with 1 year courses - IMT started last year. Their requirement is 3 yrs experience.

As such if you have 3+ years experience, 1-yr course will be highly beneficial. You already know market conditions, your future goal, practised customer negatiation, and "tuned" to management culture - you would be wasting a year in the regular 2-yr course relearning - i have got this feedback from some colleagues in 2-yr course.

Thanx Veer!
But still there is sm ambiguity regarding placment....2 yr course's placement is good in some A/ B+ grd colleges...? wat abt the scene of this Yr GMP batch?

HI guys,
ust a quick one. Do we have to go through XAT? Is GMAT not being considered? If not why? All other institutes are...

I just gave GMAT and dunno if I have the energy left fot XAT!

Hi Veer and other GMP batch

I am interested in the GMP 07-08 batch. I have more than 7 years of experience in Banking. Currently I am with one of MNC Banks as Product Manager. I have a decent package of close to Rs. 1 Mn p.a. I am at the middle management level.

I had admit for AIM, Manila for MM 06-07 which I have deffered to 07-08. The hitch with AIM, Manila is that they don't have active placements as is the international practice. Also the cost of MM at AIM, Manila is approx Rs. 1 Mn. as compared to XLRI's 3-4 lacs.

Guys need your inputs in deciding which program to go in for.

Ravi

Thks for valuable information.....

I am eager to know @ placement scenario.

XLRI Website hardly gives actual facts.

Let me know company names , pay package & position offerd after GPM programme so far.
