Folks just wanted to give everybody here a heads-up Once we move to the new forum, I will be closing this thread down. It's anyway gotten way too long.

Once we move to the new section, what I'd like you to do is create a thread for each problem that you want to discuss. The title should follow the format "Source" "Type" "Question Number" "Misc information"
So thread titles will now look like "OG12 DS #247" or "TIME PS #7 Book5Pg38"

Why I am doing this
In this thread alone there are a ton of good problems that most likely nobody is ever going to read because it's buried too deep. And that's a serious waste. The new format allows somebody to more efficiently use the tags to find a particular solution rather than reposting the question.

As always open to suggestions and discussions

I am not really sure of the idea. Although there may be tons of material buried in this thread, making a new system where all problems will have a unique link won't be an easy way out too. I am thinking about a situation where we have more than 1000 problems then one may be searching each thread .... let me know if I may have misunderstood your idea....

Seems like i made a blooper....

with all the sentences, there is a modifer which modifies columbus.
With options A, C and E, the sentences are awkward. "rather than....was flat"....columbus was sent. It should either be..."rather than...was flat"....the king and queen sent columbus....

C and D show correct intent. However D uses rather than while C uses instead of . Dont remember the rule but "rather than" seems correct

The intent has not changed. Rest all sound awkward in terms of time period or the annual rate of increase.

I do not know that. would love to clear my concepts on it..

if u can get ur hands on OG 13 just look at 71.. May be i did not understand it.. but i got it wrong and did not understud the explaination also.. can not type one more question..:P

I do not think that this question is wrong.. and trust me target750 u just have the right approach and u can nail the exam.
For the records this is the first time that I will be appearing for GMAT was chasing CAT..

Bud, I do not have OG 13 with me. Perhaps you can somehow type that question( just like our bollywood hero somehow kills the enemy in spit of being shot at multiple times...)..yes you can do it!. meanwhile i will look on the internet for the mentioned question...

but i would love to know the reason for omiting a subject in an independent clause.. that was the reason why I asked this question. and i read somewhere that u can omit.. but why and when..? i do not know that.. Hope u can help.. with this. thanks :)

Kunal..Thanks for the answer...dude i m more of a rookie with the verbal stuff...more than half the stuff what i read on these threads just blows over my head....never really cared about grammar in school....don't even know what subjunctive is (any many other grammar terms)....I just try to look for patterns and some intent....no wonder i scored pathetically in my GMAT verbal ...

Just a quick note...can it be a printing mistake...i was gng through the manhattan gmat website once...on one of their thread...the moderator had mentioned that one of the answer in OG was wrong...

the thing is when u use semi-colon u shud have an independent clause having a subject and a verb.. but thats not the case here...
so I need help to differentiate when to use that "independent clause" thing and when not to.

i agree target750 that parallelism is an issue . but then y why wud we need a semi-colon? hope u get my point

Well, as i have read at many places, the answer is the best among the choices and may not be the best in english usage. Considering that, I would make the choice as provided earlier and move on. Let me know of your take on that.
