    Hi All!

Congos to all those who have made it so far and ATB to the waitlisters

Just a request guys, please go through the ongoing discussion in the thread before putting forward a generic doubt/question, your query might already have been answered. In case of any specific query, feel free to shoot and we'll be happy to help!

Also, regarding placements-related query, please hold on a little bit. As already been mentioned before, the placement report would be out very soon and trust me, it would be encouraging :)

    Cheers!

Students shouldn't rely on rankings to find the best institute: LS Ganesh, DoMS-IIT Madras

iitmadras_lsganesh.jpg Not quite in favor of advertising and miffed by the many b-school rankings present today, Professor Ganesh LS, Ex-HOD and Professor at Department of Management Studies-IIT Madras (DoMS-IIT Madras) wants students to make it a habit to research well before taking admission in any management institute. He also wants management education in India to develop among the best in the world, "I want the best students across the world to come to India to study management", he says. Following is what he has to say about studies, curriculum and life at DoMs-IIT Madras.

      • anonymous To the aspirants, This is my first post in PG. I graduated from some IIT and currently doing my MBA in some IIT. From my personal experience of seeing the both I can say, 1. Institute's brand name gives you the first job. After that you are on your own. 2. IITs (even IIT SOMs) give excellent functional knowledge as their professors are highly qualified and experienced and they have the support of PhD students. Opportunity of learning out of the classrooms is huge in IITs. The other institutes (including bottom ranked b-schools) which are having such intellectual capital are obviously at par with IIT SOMs. 3. Those who choose b-schools only after seeing the placement reports probably don't know whey they are doing MBA. It's about gaining functional knowledge and practicing those. You will get ample opportunity of doing so in IITs because of the quality of faculties and support from research infrastructure. Here people have luxury to consult the finest consultants from industry before they make any b-plan or find solutions of business cases. These are they things why people do MBA for. 4. IITs never spent on advertising as they didn't need to. (from 1960's to till date) 5. MBA programs in IITs will succeed in near future if not already. IITs focus on quality education, placements follows. So, to the aspirants, I was in a dilemma where to go to IIT for doing MBA or to follow the herd and do MBA in some other B-Schools of better rank. I chose the first. I support some of the arguments of Rock n Rolla, "go to any iit you will find loads f profs with almost similar or more credentials that this guy has still most f them dnt come near to others when we compare then in the field f imparting good education so please dont talk f degrees nd still if ur so fond f them get loads f them nd help urself by stuffng them in your big mouth iit , mit iims . aaahh !!! dude try getting into one f these nd u will knw it hardly matters that frm whr u get a piece f printed paper . although it might help u in becoming a millionaire but dudeone cannot get respect with the help f these printed papers ." As he says, it's not about the brand-name and degrees in your CV, it's about the quality of education you get from that place. IITs are surely focusing on the right thing. It pays in long run. Don't judge an institute by its rank or placement figures only. Govt Institutes like IIMs, IITs, NITIE, FMS etc don't have luxury or are not willing to do 'manipulation' in placement reports. Others are not 'obliged' to quote the correct figures. It does not mean that private b-schools are bad. Probably this is what the professor says.

      • anonymous The tenor of the above comments -- mudslinging, personal attacks, totally bizarre analogies -- and irrelevant, I might add -- and vicious, street level stuff (in pretty lousy English sometimes), makes me wonder about the shining India! Why can't there be a professional discussion without folks dragging stuff down to garbage level? Thank you for your wisdom, Prof. Ganesh and for being a beacon to prospective students. Please continue producing great students and splendid winners, across the globe! Brand IIT rocks, and is on par with MIT, Berkeley, and Harvard -- the whole world knows this and has said so, not now, but for decades! The IITs don't need any mode of certification from anyone! Never did, never will!

              Seniors,
              I'll be in IIT M on 26/7 i.e Sunday.
Already got the ticket and don't wanna cancel it.

Just went through Form A 05 of the offer letter..its the admission & orientation programme schedule.
Right at the bottom of that page, referring to Admission day (27/7), its mentioned that

students who wish to come one day earlier may do so and report to the Chairman, Council of Wardens IITM between 9 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. on 21.7.2009

Now, what does 'report' means? Do we have to report physically!! ( that will be absurd...) or can we send an e-mail/call the office??

              Seniors plz get some info..

              Regards,
              Vamsi Krishna P
