Indians don't know how to manage people...that is why our workforce is complacent and it is impossible to get anything done...and forget having it done right... Do we blame Indian people? Indian B Schools? What are the Koreans doing right?

Congrats to those accepted. It seems like a great school. I recently got a brochure from MYRA school of business in mysore and noticed they have a lot of profs from WP Carey. I'm beginning to like WP carey more and more everyday...their weather is good too unlike the harvard/MIT (but I couldnt get in there anyways lol). I haven't heard much about the ASU campus, but a lot of my friends have gone there for undergrad - apparently it has 65,000 people! It would be such an experience to go there.

Dear Sir, I've been looking into ISB for a while as the faculty is unmatched. For students who just miss the mark in ISB admissions, what kinds of schools should we be looking for that will also give us a good education? There is a dearth of quality schools in India. But I would like to stay in India...I want a global education from a place like IS...so faculty and student exchange programs are interesting to me. I know this is an odd question but I would be grateful for your response. Regards.

Hey NKS for your reference, I am pasting some of the pros and cons of applying to UB MBA, which were posted in an earlier thread:

Pros :
1.Extrremely cheap. the overall tuition for 2 yrs comes to less than 28k
2.in new york state.
3.hence job huntin( especially for finance) is not that difficult. atleast the companies are there.
4.small town. i have hrd from a former student that living there is a pleasure

Cons :
1.Placement Record is not grreat AT ALL. the average salary for a 06 passout is just about 60k. so even though ROI is not abyssmal, still 60k after an MBA is not worth it.
2.its not a highly ranked school at all. in the present US economy scenario, its better to have an mba done from a univ which ppl know and appreciate, than to join some mba school in one corner of new york state.
3.my philosophy: we will do our mba only once in our lifetime( cos most Bschools wont allow u to do it a second time ).. hence i wld rather wait for a year, and try my luck again at better schools.

It is certainly a school which people know about and has top faculty who are extremely extremely distinguished. UB also IS internationally recognized because they have tons of international connections and their PhD students are noted as being top scholars (not sure about MBAs though in general). It is one of the better schools for international students. HOWEVER living there is hell unless you have a car and also it is cold. In terms of ROI, a lot of my friends from there have gone on to do very well, but of course they did MBA/JD or MBA/MS. The Buffalo economy is sustained by education and healthcare...those looking work at MNCs would do better to attend Duke, Wharton, Kellog, MIT...or else stay in India and get a real education from ISB-type schools which have global faculty in my opinion.

How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie- while very old - it's a pretty classic book and extremely readable. You can pick it up on the side of the road all over India.

Frank Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" is also extremely readable and useful.

I'm not really one for self-help books but these two are universally appealing.

Don't be dramatic dude...just because they have openings for lecturers does NOT mean that they don't have enough required faculty. Universities are always trying to expand and diversify their faculty as professors move on to more research oriented roles, chill out with their families, become more involved in industry, take sabbaticals, move to more administrative roles, etc. JUST FYI.

Seriously though - what kind of a name is Great Lakes?! Why do such Indian schools feel the need to connect themselves to random things in other countries to give the impression that they are global? What is next? The Swiss Alps School of Engineering in Thiruvanamallai? Or the English Channel School of Design? Or the Niagara Falls Institute of Medical Sciences? LOL.

If you liked The Tipping Point (honestly who does NOT love Malcolm Gladwell) read the book "Sway" by Ron and Ori Braffman. It's just amazing - explains how people are swayed to do irrational things. I'd highly recommend it to all business people because it has great annecdotes for sharing around the coffee-table (or a business dinner!)

Finished with "Autobiography of a Yogi" ....average read with a lot of mystic and spiritual stuff .....

Can someone explain why Autobiography of a Yogi has such a tremendous following? Personally I loved it - but I'm confused on how it has such a global reach!

Good point - that's definitely one reason I think. I remember looking at the salary sheets for the pass-outs a while ago and it seems everyone was earning AT least 65K - which is pretty decent. But there were a few people who were earning around 95K and that's definitely due to prior work experience, and just luck. Don't think of UB as a ticket to making big-bucks immediately - but as a school which offers a wealth of international connections and TONS of further scholarship opportunities (department of defense, microsoft, infosys, indian gov etc)
