Me: I am working as an Analytics Associate at ZS Associates.
P2: Oh it is ZS. We couldn't understand whether it is 2S or 25 Associates.

P2: What is ZS?
Me: Comes from the initials of our founders, Zoltners and Sinha
P1: What does the company do and what do you do?
Me: Explained.
P1: How does your model work?
Me: It is based on agent based modeling
P1: Oh interesting.
Next 5 minutes on ABM. In the end I could not answer one question.
P2: So you know about the power sector? Tell us about it.
Me: Gave an overview of capacity, thermal/hydel/others distribution and said problems are huge gap b/w demand and supply, high transmission/distribution loss and theft and current coal shortage. Coal India and pvt companies are not producing enough. Export is problematic because Indonesian coal prices have risen recently and companies cannot pass on the rise to consumers because tariff is fixed.
For nuclear, there are safety concerns and enrichment and other technology is not so developed. We do not have enough Uranium deposits so we must import. We have Thorium deposits but we do not have the technology for thorium.
P2: UPA did something for this?
Me: Don't remember the details but now it is easier to import fuel and technology from other countries.
P1: so why this job after engg? Just to get the IIT brand?
Me: Not jst the brand but engg teaches you how things work and this is important in any job. I will giv an example. the model I work on is a probabilistic one. We use distributions for all inputs. We also use engg concepts like state charts.
P2: Do you remember chain rule of differentiation? Write it down.
Me: Wrote.

Me: That is going to be difficult

Fish market is an understatement. Everyone shouted. The only good part was everyone came out unhurt. I entered the discussion 3-4 times, gave examples against the topic also.

Me: I am very fond of music. I learnt classical music when I was in school and in college, I was a member of the music society where I performed on stage several times. But in office I am not getting a chance to sing..

It was like a stress interview for everyone in my panel.

Me: I hope so, Sir.
P2: What feedback did you collect in the last 3 hours?
Me: Everyone came out smiling.
P2: That is observation. What is the feedback?
Me: we are being asked why mba, about current affairs and the general thinking process is being checked.
P2: Where do you want to start?
Me: We could start with my job.
P2: What do you NOT like about your job?
Me: Most of the clients are in the US or Europe. So sometimes, there is not enough clarity on why we do things in a certain way from here in India.
P2: What did you do to solve this?
Me: Most client meetings are late in the night. I try to attend as much as possible. Else, I try to convince my manager to record them. Also, I try to keep a good relationship with my manager. He should believe that it is important for me to know everything and he should copy me on all client e-mails.
P2: Looks like you have solved the problem
Me: Sir what I said is not possible all the time. There are many offline discussions between the client and my manager, which my manager cannot convey to me because he is very busy with his work. So he just tells me what is to be done, but doesn't explain why.
P2: What work do you do?
Me:
P2: This is very simple. You just need one equation to get a forecast. Why do u need to do all this?
Me: Eqn is one method but our model is much more detailed. Gave some examples of the new insights we came up with in my projects.
P2: What you described has a standard name. Do you know?
Me: No sir

Me: Yes but no one had validated this in this particular market until we did.

P2: Power sector?! Ranbaxy was in the news 3-4 years back. Do you know why?
Me: <3-4 saal pehle to CAT ka naam bhi nahi suna tha. :))> I do not remember. I remember the recent news.
P2: What is it?
Me: US FDA said no to importing Ranbaxy drugs from certain plants in India because of quality issues. But now the issue is resolved. The other big thing is Lipitor.
P2: Why does Ranbaxy export to the US? Why don't they sell here in India? There is so much population and demand here.
For the next 10 minutes, I proposed and he disposed some 5-6 points, one point at a time. In the end,

P3: What are your hobbies? What do you do in your free time?
Me:
P3: How have you been able to contribute at the NGO?
Me: Initially, they gave me a teaching position, teaching Eng to computer course students to work on their speaking skills and help them get a job. Then I taught school children for some time when their teacher was absent. Now I am doing write up's for the NGO's new website. Explained about write up's.
P1: Any other hobby? Reading?
Me: Now and then. Not very often.
P1: What did you last read?
Me: Thunder over Kandahar.
