When I was in my college and was preparing for CAT-cetra(term I use for 'CAT XAT IIFT etcetera') and somebody would ask me why MBA?(none other than the faculties in coaching institute where i used to study) I used to say,"well, an Engineering degree is not enough for growth in corporate world, you have to have that extra qualification to distinguish you from the crowd"
After this answer, the faculty would give me a scornful smile and change the topic.
1 year later when I recall that day, while working in an Automotive company, I realise how much my answer used to amuse them. I work with Project management group in a leading automotive company of India, a company which believes in aggressive growth and marketing(no prices for guessing the name). While working with PM I learnt how important decision making is in corporate world. My job taught me how to handle crises situations. Situations like product launch getting delayed unnecessarily while rivals are filling the market with similar products, situations like scores of field failures lying pending with R&D; which certainly affects customer loyalty towards our products. Handling such situations, I learnt that had I been a simple engineer trying out multiple settings for the carburettor before tuning it to peak performance, I won't have been able to become a decision maker.
When we ask the engineers for reasons behind project delay and they reply with puppy eyes that their Boss will be able to answer it, I feel the lack of responsibility at their level, which I certainly cherish.:biggrin:
